With such a strong presence, the company obviously has thousands of patents to its name and the list keeps on growing.

Last year, the South Korean company was the second-biggest applicant for the smart home patents. 5G is being seen as the next big thing in technology and Samsung holds hundreds of patents for this new communication technology.

Now, as per the report from Business Korea, Samsung is secured around 7,000 patents this year and there are still a few months left before the year ends, meaning the number of patents for the year could grow in the coming months.

The report adds that Samsung owns a large majority of patents in the USA and is leveraging around 80,633 patents for various technologies. The next major region for the brand is its home country South Korea with 44,271 patents, followed by Europe with 39,288 patents. In China and Japan, Samsung owns 18,879 and 9,584 patents, respectively. In other regions, the company holds about 13,161 patents.

Overall, the South Korean giant holds more than 200,000 patents globally, which cover technology ranging from semiconductors and communications to smartphones and Smart televisions. Samsung is also the world’s leading spender when it comes to Research & Development, resulting in new patents as the company keeps developing new technologies.

Now, more details about the upcoming chip have surfaced, along with information about the first smartphone packing it.

As per the latest report, Vivo’s first self-developed ISP chip, which is codenamed “Yueying,” could be made official next month, i.e., September 2021. It is also being reported that the upcoming Vivo X70 series could become the first devices to pack this new chip.

Vivo seems to be quite focused on developing its own chips as the company is planning to have a team of around 500-600 members in this department, claimed Hu Baishan, Executive Vice President at Vivo. In September 2019, while acknowledging the company’s plan of making its own chips, he added that Vivo started thinking about it in 2018.

The company is also looking to hire several new team members of the chip division for Research & Development and is willing to pay them handsomely, at least that’s what the report from ITHome indicates.

So far, we are aware of two chip-related trademarks from the company — Vivo SoC and Vivo Chip. The product categories covered by these two trademarks include central processing units, modems, computer chips, printed circuits, and computer storage.

Vivo has also planned to invest a huge amount in the Research & Development of 5G, Artificial Intelligence, and other emerging technologies. Its sister company OPPO is also developing its own chip which is expected to release with the Find X4 smartphone early next year. OPPO‘s chip development team has about 1,000 members.

Another Chinese brand, Xiaomi has already launched its first self-developed ISP chip named Surge C1 and is packed in the company’s first foldable smartphone — Mi MIX Fold which was launched last year.

The development of making their own chips seems like a precautionary move since Chinese companies are now investing more to become self-reliant after China-based tech giant Huawei was put on the “Entity List” by the United States. It effectively banned the company from doing business or procuring components from US-based companies.

This first R&D centre in India from Oppo will be the company’s largest facility outside its home country. The facility will contribute towards bringing exciting innovation and advanced technologies to India, says the company.

Currently, the site has 50 people on the development side and another 50 on quality control. However, the company says that it plans to increase the workforce to about 500 in the next three to five years. Further, the company has revealed that its first R&D centre in India will focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI), camera, fast charging technology, and 5G.

It appears that Oppo is seeing Research & Development as a key to the company’s plans to dominate the global smartphone market. The company has increased its focus on innovation and R&D and recently announced a global investment of RMB 10 billion towards the R&D space for 2019. Oppo currently has 3000 engineers working at its R&D centres across all locations.

Tasleem Arif, Vice-President and R&D Head, Oppo India, said that the company will mainly emphasis on deeper consumer insight. He added that the new R&D centre in India will work on a number of local features that will help improve the experience on its phones, including User Experience (UX). In a statement, he said:

The opening of our R&D centre in Hyderabad will help us implement innovative and exciting technologies in future products that we introduce in India as well as help us build a local ecosystem for smartphone devices. As India is an extremely important market for us we aim to drive innovation locally through the R&D centre in Hyderabad to deliver an insightful revolutionary, and seamless smartphone experience that caters to the demands of our consumers.
However, the Chinese firm has not yet disclosed information related to the investment for the new Research & Development centre in India. This will be the company’s seventh such facility globally.
The upcoming R&D centre in Hyderabad, India, will work towards gaining deeper insights about Indian consumers and market, and thereby help in building India-centric innovations and customised product offerings, OPPO said in a statement.

Charles Wong, OPPO India President, said, “We are focused towards offering unique experiences to our consumers in India through our innovations and technological capabilities. The opening of our first R&D Centre in Hyderabad is a step in that direction and strengthens our commitment to the Indian consumers.”

As the Vice President and Head of R&D at Oppo India, Tasleem Arif will be leading the team which will focus on software localisation for Indian consumers as well as device quality. He brings to the new role almost 15 years of experience in mobile software, design and development.
