Safari 17.3 is here for macOS Monterey and macOS Ventura

Amid the iOS 17.3 and iPadOS 17.3 updates with plenty of new useful features, the Cupertino giant is here with Safari 17.3 for macOS Monterey and macOS Ventura. There are some new changes in the latest Safari update that enhance system security. Primarily, it fixes the privacy issue that shows user’s private data in Settings. It enhances the issue with improved handling of user preferences in Settings.

Further, it fixes some WebKit-related issues that may have led to arbitrary code execution and could have caused data theft. The update will surely strengthen the system’s browser security. The severity of the issues seems high, as one of the issues was related to the processing of maliciously crafted web content, which could have led to arbitrary code execution. The issue with ID CVE-2024-23222 is addressed, and the latest update ensures better security.

Safari is well known for its modern design, fast performance, and integration with the Apple ecosystem. There are plenty of exciting features that the Safari Browser offers, including intelligent tracking prevention, enhanced privacy, and security. Because it offers better speed and energy efficiency, Apple users use it frequently.

New Safari seems to blur the line between desktop and web apps

Bing Chat won’t be Exclusive to Microsoft Edge Anymore

Bing Chat has been quite popular since it was unveiled on the Microsoft Edge browser some months back. It had a significant amount of unique features that set it apart from other competitor chatbots such as ChatGPT and Bard. The collaboration between OpenAI and Microsoft was probably the reason for the exclusivity of the chatbot to Microsoft Edge. However, the company now intends to make Bing Chat available on all platforms. The tech giant has revealed plans to expand its availability to third-party browsers, such as Apple’s Safari and Google’s Chrome, starting in June itself.

Chrome and Safari seem to be the first browsers to have access to Bing Chat

Screenshots shared on Bing’s Reddit page over the weekend showcased Bing Chat successfully running on Safari and Chrome. When questioned about the post on Twitter, Mikhail Parakhin, head of Microsoft’s advertising and web services division, confirmed the news and stated that the company is currently conducting experiments, gradually rolling out the feature. Parakhin did not disclose which specific third-party browsers will receive Bing Chat support.

By extending Bing Chat’s compatibility to other browsers, Microsoft aims to attract a larger user base. According to StatCounter’s latest data, Edge currently holds a 9.91% market share, ranking third among browsers. In contrast, Google Chrome dominates the market with a significant 66.02% share, while Apple Safari secures the second position with 12.79%.

To ensure optimal performance, Microsoft is likely to limit the number of Bing Chat users accessing the service via Chrome and Safari during the testing phase. This approach will allow the company to gather valuable insights and make informed decisions about expanding the feature to a wider audience. Additionally, Microsoft has recently confirmed an increase in the upper limits for daily chat rounds from 200 to 300, as well as the maximum number of rounds per session from 20 to 30. Furthermore, Bing Chat’s functionality has been enhanced with the introduction of Precision Mode and Balanced Mode, expanding the use of Bing Image Creator.

Microsoft Edge is no longer world’s second desktop browser

According to Statcounter’s April 2023 report, Microsoft Edge is no longer the world’s second most popular desktop browser. The increasing importance of mobile devices, rising MacBook sales due to M-series processors, and users wanting to stay within the ecosystem sticking to Safari have finally led to the inevitable. The American technology giant has handed over its long-held second place position to Apple. The current ranking is as follows:

Google Chrome – 66.13% (+0.36 points)
Apple Safari – 11.87% (+0.95 points)
Microsoft Edge – 11% (-0.15 points)
Firefox – 5.65% (-0.82 points)
Opera – 3.09% (-0.08 points)

Statcounter says Safari is now in second place with a market share of 11.87%, a 0.95 points uplift compared with the previous month. Edge is now third, struggling to surpass an 11% mark for almost a year. In April 2023, Microsoft Edge lost 0.15 points. As for Chrome, it holds 66.13%, with a 0.36 points month-over-month increase.

Probably the most disappointing thing is that the decline happened this year. As you know, ChatGPT and similar artificial intelligence technologies have been creating a storm on the internet for a while now. Microsoft is one of the companies that have adapted to this technology the fastest. However, it seems that innovations have not worked despite all these efforts.

Microsoft Edge 110 Has a Built-In VPN, But Not for Everyone

For this reason, its competitors have to make much more effort to be preferred. For example, they can request much lower system requirements or provide features that are available with add-ons in Chrome as default. Lastly, Microsoft Edge 110 added a built-in VPN following this policy, but only for select users. Here are the details…

Microsoft Edge 110 has a built-in VPN

Microsoft has been testing a version of its Edge with a built-in VPN service for about a year. Now, the company has rolled out the feature to some users in the latest stable version. The new feature, called Secure Network, has been implemented in partnership with Cloudflare and provides users with 1GB of secure VPN traffic as part of the free plan. The fact that the feature has reached the final stages of implementation suggests that Microsoft is likely to announce pricing and a full release of the Edge Secure Network soon.

The Secure Network VPN feature emphasizes the privacy benefits of using a VPN rather than its ability to circumvent regional restrictions by changing the user’s IP address. The service automatically selects servers in the user’s region for safe operation on public networks. In other words, users can only use the Secure Network to protect their privacy.

According to screenshots of Edge 110, which have appeared online, the VPN service supports three modes of operation: “Selected Sites,” “Optimized,” and “All Sites.” This suggests that users will have the option to choose which sites they want to protect with the VPN, or to turn it on for all sites. It’s worth noting that Google added a free VPN to its Pixel 7 series smartphones late last year. However, Microsoft’s decision to integrate a VPN directly into its web browser is a significant step that could lead to increased use of VPNs among its users.

The integration of a VPN service into a major web browser marks a significant step forward for online privacy and security. But it’s not likely to become the industry standard until Google starts using it.
