Samsung has just revealed it filed a patent sometime last year for an &#8220;environmental sensor&#8221; that measures the quality of air by detecting various particles in the air.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Samsung-patents-environmental-sensor.jpg?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-152930" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Samsung-patents-environmental-sensor.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung patent" width="793" height="803" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Samsung-patents-environmental-sensor.jpg 793w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Samsung-patents-environmental-sensor-296x300.jpg 296w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Samsung-patents-environmental-sensor-768x778.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 793px) 100vw, 793px" /></a></p>
<p>Who would have thought an air sensor would be so small to fit into a smartphone but Samsung seems to have done that. The patent is accompanied by some sketches which show how the tech giant was able to achieve the feat. The air quality sensor is designed in a flat pattern and is then incorporated into the display substrate. The air sensor is capable of measuring particles of different sizes and amount present in the air. The available details don&#8217;t include how air will reach the flexible AMOLED display&#8217;s glass substrate itself.</p>

<div>We can&#8217;t say for sure if this new patent would be included in Samsung smartphones as early as the Galaxy S9 but that doesn&#8217;t look impossible. We have seen a number of Samsung patents in the past which are yet to see the light of day. But in most cases, when Samsung patents are brought to the full glare of the public, their launch in a retail device is not far away. The patent is only being brought to the open one year and six months after it was filed wich means Samsung is ready to go official with it.</div>

The patent application was published today in Samsung&#8217;s home country and it bears the title, &#8220;Digital photographing apparatus and the operating method for the same&#8221;.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/samsung-patent/"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-113776" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/samsung-patent.png?x44794" alt="samsung patent filing" width="1024" height="584" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/samsung-patent.png 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/samsung-patent-300x171.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/samsung-patent-768x438.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></a></p>
<p>A perusal of the patent document reveals a pair of attached images and on one of the images we could see a smartphone with dual cameras at the rear. While one of the lens is a wide-angle lens, the other seems to function as a magnifier to optimize the image in focus.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/samsung-patent-2/"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-113777" src="http://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/samsung-patent-2.png?x44794" alt="samsung-patent-2" width="962" height="578" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/samsung-patent-2.png 962w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/samsung-patent-2-300x180.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/samsung-patent-2-768x461.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 962px) 100vw, 962px" /></a></p>
<p>The dual camera setup seems to make it easy to take shots of a very wide angle and still capture a particular object as the focus object. Samsung demonstrated this feature using a snowboarder who is the main focus and yet the camera still captured a wide scenery of the snowy environment where the snowboarder surfs.</p>
<p style="text-align: center"><strong><span style="color: #ff0000">Read Also:</span> <a href="http://www.gizmochina.com/2016/10/04/samsung-patent-bendable-smartphone-display/">Samsung Files Patent for Bendable Smartphone Display</a></strong></p>
<p>It is not known if the new Samsung patent filing will find its way into the Galaxy S8 expected this year. There were already rumors of the Galaxy S8 using a dual-lens camera at the rear but that isn&#8217;t certain. Perhaps if we don&#8217;t see the dual-lens technology on the Galaxy S8, it might just find its way into the Galaxy Note 8 except Samsung kills that line as is already rumored. We can&#8217;t eait to have Samsung&#8217;s first dual-lens camera packing device on our hands. If it is going to be the Galaxy S8, time will tell.</p>
