<p>For those unaware, the mobile port of Apex Legends is the Android/iOS version of the popular PC title. It is a battle royale style game with unique characters that have different abilities. This game was first released back on <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2022/05/17/apex-legends-mobile-android-iphone-ipad-launched/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">17th May 2022</a>, while its Beta had been live for sometime now in limited regions. But just a week after its launch, the mobile game generated 4.8 million US Dollars in just a week with most of the revenue coming from in game purchases for cosmetic items like weapons, legends skins, Battle Pass, and more.</p>
<p>Notably, we had also previously reported on Apex Legends Mobile becoming the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2022/05/20/apex-legends-mobile-most-downloaded-game/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">most downloaded game in more than 60 countries</a> as well. The latest news arrives from known analytics based firm Sensor Tower who shared the estimate of the player spending in the game. It also offered the breakdown of player expenditure based on the region, with the US ranking first as users spent 2.1 million US Dollars in the game, accounting for 44 percent of total revenue.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-460927" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Apex-Legends-Mobile-Android-and-iOS-1024x559.jpg?x44794" alt="Apex Legends Mobile" width="1024" height="559" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Apex-Legends-Mobile-Android-and-iOS-1024x559.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Apex-Legends-Mobile-Android-and-iOS-1024x559-300x164.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Apex-Legends-Mobile-Android-and-iOS-1024x559-768x419.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Apex-Legends-Mobile-Android-and-iOS-1024x559-696x380.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Apex-Legends-Mobile-Android-and-iOS-1024x559-769x420.jpg 769w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>This was followed by Japan and Thailand. This marks an impressive milestone by Respawn Entertainment, since its rival PUGB Mobile only brought in around 600,000 US Dollars in the first week of its release back in 2018. Although, both of these figures are dwarfed by COD: Mobile, which brought in a whopping 14.8 million US Dollars in its first week.</p>

Sensor Tower Store Intelligence data shows that the app, including its Chinese iOS version called Douyin, was the world’s most downloaded and highest-paid non-gaming app in the first half of 2021, with 383 million first installs and consumer spending approximately $919.2 million U.S. dollars.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/tiktok.jpg?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-400124" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/tiktok.jpg?x44794" alt="" width="700" height="410" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/tiktok.jpg 700w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/tiktok-300x176.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/tiktok-696x408.jpg 696w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></a></p>
<p>The data shows that the adoption rate of TikTok was on the increase in 2021. First downloads increased by 2% from the fourth quarter of 2020 to the first quarter of 2021, reaching 177.5 million, and increased by 16% from the first quarter to the second quarter of 2021. Reached 205.4 million. This is the largest increase the app has experienced since its start-up record quarter in 2020 when it had more than 315 million installations.</p>
<p>However, TikTok’s new downloads decreased by 38% year-on-year from nearly 619 million in the first half of 2020, but this was partly due to the removal of the app from the Indian app store. Even so, consumer spending on TikTok increased by 73% from the US$530.2 million in the same period last year.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/tiktok-2.png?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-400125" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/tiktok-2.png?x44794" alt="" width="700" height="463" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/tiktok-2.png 700w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/tiktok-2-300x198.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/tiktok-2-696x460.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/tiktok-2-635x420.png 635w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></a></p>
<p>The app has been installed more than 3 billion times, making it the fifth non-gaming app to achieve this goal. The other four apps with 3 billion installs are <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/07/15/whatsapp-beta-now-allows-multi-device-usage-without-a-phone/">WhatsApp</a>, Messenger, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/06/10/facebook-first-smartwatch-next-summer-dual-cameras/">Facebook</a>, and Instagram, all of which are owned by Facebook.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/tiktok-3.png?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-400126" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/tiktok-3.png?x44794" alt="" width="700" height="463" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/tiktok-3.png 700w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/tiktok-3-300x198.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/tiktok-3-696x460.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/tiktok-3-635x420.png 635w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></a></p>
<p>In the second quarter of 2021, TikTok&#8217;s consumer spending achieved the largest quarter-on-quarter growth since the second quarter of 2020, increasing from $384.7 million in the first quarter of 2021 to $534.6 million in the second quarter of 2021. 39%.</p>
<p>Globally, TikTok&#8217;s consumer spending has now exceeded $2.5 billion. Since 2014, only 16 non-gaming applications have accumulated more than US$1 billion in total revenue, and only Tinder, Netflix, YouTube, and Tencent Video have reached more than US$2.5 billion.</p>

The research firm has again published data regarding to the top-grossing mobile game globally for the month of January. The revenue estimates were collated from data obtained from the App Store and Google Play worldwide between January 1, 2020, and January 31, 2021, and represent gross user spending.<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/sensor-tower.jpg?x44794"><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-372006" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/sensor-tower.jpg?x44794" alt="" width="1728" height="864" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/sensor-tower.jpg 1728w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/sensor-tower-300x150.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/sensor-tower-768x384.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/sensor-tower-1024x512.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/sensor-tower-696x348.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/sensor-tower-1068x534.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/sensor-tower-840x420.jpg 840w" sizes="(max-width: 1728px) 100vw, 1728px" /></a></p>
<p>The data shows that Tencent&#8217;s Honor of Kings was the top earner with a revenue of $267.3 million spent by players. The figure represents almost 22% growth from January 2020. It should be noted that most of the game&#8217;s revenue emanated from China, put at a whopping 97% while Thailand contributed 1% of the game&#8217;s revenue for January.</p>
<p>The second top-earner is unsurprisingly PUBG Mobile, yet another game distributed by Tencent. The game raked in more than $259 million in gross revenue, a 26 percent year-over-year growth when compared to January 2020. About 60% of PUBG Mobile&#8217;s revenue were from players in China where the game is known as Game For Peace. The United States contributed 9.8%. PUBG Mobile is still banned in India so the revenue from India would have dropped drastically.</p>
<p>The third-highest grossing game is Fate/Grand Order from Sony’s Aniplex, while the fourth spot is occupied by Genshin Impact from miHoYo. Completing the top 5 is Roblox from Roblox Corporation.</p>
<p>Professional Baseball Spirits A from Konami was a new entrant to the overall top 10 grossing mobile games in January. The title had its best month ever, racking up $112.5 million, a more than three times increase from January 2020. By January 31, 2021, lifetime revenue had reached $1.3 billion, with Japan accounting for all player spending. It’s evidence of just how lucrative the Japanese mobile games market remains, and how much success publisher Konami has found in the space.</p>

<p>Signal, Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, ZOOM, MX Taka Tak, Snapchat, and Facebook Messenger are the other apps that were in the top ten most installed non-gaming apps worldwide for the month of January 2021.</p>
<p>Store Intelligence registered users would be able to view additional content like an overview of the app&#8217;s performance over time and several other performance metrics.</p>
<p>Sensor Tower has also provided the top app downloads for January 2021 via the App Store and Google Play Store. TikTok, YouTube, ZOOM, Telegram, and Facebook were the top five non-gaming app downloads on the App Store, while the corresponding apps on the Google Play Store were Telegram, Signal, TikTok, MX Taka Tak, and Facebook.</p>
<p>The estimates include downloads for the App Store and Google Play Store from January 1, 2021, to January 31, 2021. It is noted that Apple apps and Google pre-installed apps were not included in the data, as they consist of unique installs only.</p>

China was the dominating market with a 96 percent share in the overall revenue within the game, followed by Taiwan with just 1.5 percent and Thailand with 1.2 percent revenue share.</p>

The game was released by Chinese publisher miHoYo and has generated over $60 million in player spending in both the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/app-store/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">App Store</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/google-play-store/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Google Play</a> combined within the first week of its official launch.</p>

<p>According to a <a href="https://sensortower.com/blog/genshin-impact-first-week-revenue" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>SensorTower</em> </a>report, the video game is currently the world&#8217;s second highest grossing title, just behind <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/honor-of-kings/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Honor of Kings</a> from <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/tencent-games/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Tencent Games</a> and above <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/pubg-mobile/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">PUBG Mobile</a>. As per the report, it is also the highest earning mobile game in the RPG genre in the world this week and ranks above other known titles like Monster Strike and Fate/Grand Order, which arrive in second and third places respectively.</p>

<p>Genshin Impact has seen great success across the globe, especially in China, where the Chinese version of the game brought in close to $25 million in player spending so far on Apple&#8217;s App Store alone, which is close to 42 percent of its total revenue. This figure doesn&#8217;t include any other third party app stores. While the game has become popular globally, its primary market is still its home country, with $35 million or about 58 percent of its revenue coming from China alone.</p>

<p>At the moment, Genshin Impact is also the third highest grossing mobile game title in China, during its launch week. Similarly, it also ranked third in Japan and fifth in the US in terms of revenue generating mobile games. Furthermore, the App Store brought in the majority of the revenue, accounting for $42 million or 70 percent of the total revenue. On the other hand, Google Play brought in just $17.7 or about 30 percent of the total revenue.</p>

<p>Zoom was the second most installed non-gaming app with around 55 million installs, a growth of 21.4 times compared to September 2019. Completing the list of the top five most downloaded apps last month include Facebook, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/whatsapp">WhatsApp</a>, and Google Meet.</p>
<p>Following the top five <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apps">apps</a>, other apps that made it to the top 10 most installed applications in the month of September 2020 include Instagram, Snack Video, Messenger, Telegram, and Snapchat.</p>

<p>As for the countries, it was Brazil which saw the most number of installs in September, representing 11 percent of the total installs worldwide. It was followed by the United States, which captured 9 percent of the total installs.</p>
<p>Do note that the report from Sensor Tower is for non-<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/gaming">gaming</a> mobile applications downloaded from 1st September 2020 to 30th September 2020 through Apple App Store and Google Play Store and no third-party app store.</p>

<p>Looking at the list, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/tiktok/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">TikTok</a> is still the most popular application worldwide. The short video sharing application saw the highest number of downloads in both the App Store and Google Play, making it the highest download app overall as well. A total of 63.3 million installs were recorded during the month with Indonesia seeing the highest number of downloads followed by Brazil.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/09/08/call-of-duty-mobile-emerges-as-the-top-grossing-game-in-india-after-pubg-ban/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Call of Duty: Mobile emerges as the top-grossing game in India after PUBG ban</a></strong></h6>
<p>Notably, the list is for nongaming related applications, so video game titles are not ranked. Furthermore, despite the original boom period being over, Zoom is still doing extremely well in the Apple App Store with over 52.2 million downloads, coming in at the 2nd. On Android, the application fell to the 5th position. Other known names like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/facebook/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Facebook</a>, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/whatsapp/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">WhatsApp</a>, and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/instagram/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Instagram</a> can also be found on the list. Although, these social media platforms can be found in varying positions on different platforms.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-332922 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Zoom-app-featured-image.jpg?x44794" alt="TikTok" width="1200" height="800" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Zoom-app-featured-image.jpg 1200w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Zoom-app-featured-image-300x200.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Zoom-app-featured-image-768x512.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Zoom-app-featured-image-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Zoom-app-featured-image-696x464.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Zoom-app-featured-image-1068x712.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Zoom-app-featured-image-630x420.jpg 630w" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /></p>
<p>Sensor Tower estimated the downloaded figures through its own sources between the period of August 1 to August 31, with only unique downloads being counted and not pre installed ones. This metric shows that TikTok is still a market leader in various markets <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/06/29/indian-government-bans-59-chinese-mobile-apps-including-tiktok-uc-browser-and-wechat/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">despite facing a ban in India</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/08/25/tiktok-sues-trump-over-us-app-ban-election-stunt/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">issues in the US</a> as well, two of its primary markets. And in another sense, work from home is increasingly becoming the norm with Zoom seeing great success with its services.</p>

<p>According to SensorTower listing, the top 30 Chinese game publishers accounted for 26 percent of the global mobile gaming revenue for June 2020. Popular brands like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/tencent/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Tencent</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/netease/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">NetEase</a> topped the charts while other familiar names include Lilith Games, FunPlus, Lingxi Games, and more. Despite bringing in such large figures in revenue, the analyst noted that the mobile gaming market revenue was declining overall in China, Europe, and even the US. Only the Japanese market saw a rise in revenue.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>Editor&#8217;s Pick: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/07/08/huawei-to-overtake-samsung-in-q2-2020/">Huawei likely to overtake Samsung as the world’s largest smartphone maker in Q2 2020</a></strong></h6>
<p>However, it is expected that the following months could possibly bring in record breaking figures. Furthermore, the latest mobile game title from Tencent, &#8220;The Outcast Mobile,&#8221; is also seeing a great success at the moment. The new IP, which is based on a popular comic series, is already bringing in a sizeable amount of revenue that is second to only industry giants like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/pubg-mobile/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">PUBG Mobile</a> and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/king-of-glory/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">King of Glory</a>. But these are two well established games, and we can expect to see more from the new release.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-331058 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/The-Outcast-Mobile-image-850x420.png?x44794" alt="Tencent" width="850" height="420" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/The-Outcast-Mobile-image-850x420.png 850w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/The-Outcast-Mobile-image-850x420-300x148.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/The-Outcast-Mobile-image-850x420-768x379.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/The-Outcast-Mobile-image-850x420-324x160.png 324w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/The-Outcast-Mobile-image-850x420-696x344.png 696w" sizes="(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px" /></p>
<p>For those unaware, the mobile gaming market has overtaken the PC gaming and console gaming market combined in terms of sheer revenue that is being brought in. With the Chinese market being one of the largest for mobile gaming, it comes as no surprise that developers from that region are roping in such impressive figures. Notably, this success is also the reason why various AAA game publishers from consoles and PCs are also now taking the mobile gaming market more seriously and have been launching their own mobile ports of their respective popular titles.</p>

<figure id="attachment_321516" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-321516" style="width: 600px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" class="wp-image-321516 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/1729261.jpg?x44794" alt="" width="600" height="575" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/1729261.jpg 600w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/1729261-300x288.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/1729261-438x420.jpg 438w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-321516" class="wp-caption-text">Data via Sensor Tower</figcaption></figure>
<p>In the report, the global App Store and Google Play&#8217;s mobile game revenue ranked 30 of the top Chinese game publishers. According to the data, these publishers raked in more than 1.74 billion US Dollars just in the month of April. This marks a record high increase of 14 percent over March 2020 and accounts for 27.5 percent of the total current global mobile game market&#8217;s revenue.</p>

<p>Looking at the list, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/tencent-games/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Tencent Games</a> leads the Chinese mobile gaming publisher rankings. This arrives as no surprise as the video game publisher is behind many massively popular games and has also been successful in many countries apart from China through games like PUBG Mobile (which is a great hit in the global market). Other notable names in the lists include <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/netease/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">NetEase</a> that comes in second followed by Lilith Games and FunPlus at third and fourth spots respectively.</p>

<p>The mobile gaming market has been seeing a rise in recent years and is currently booming, thanks in part due to the ongoing <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/coronavirus/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Coronavirus</a> pandemic. The viral outbreak has led many people to be confined in their homes playing video games, especially on their smartphones to pass the time. Thus, the period has helped various Chinese mobile game publishers, 36 of which can even be found in the top 100 mobile game publishers that brought in the highest revenue.</p>

<p>The report adds that the company owns at least 20 Android and <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/ios">iOS</a> applications with more than 35 million downloads. Out of those, Free and Unlimited VPN, Luna VPN, Mobile Data, and Adblock Focus were recently available in the Google Play Store while Adblock Focus and Luna VPN were available in Apple&#8217;s App Store.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="size-full wp-image-309660 aligncenter" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Sensor-Tower-Data-Collection.jpg?x44794" alt="Sensor Tower Apps Data Collection" width="990" height="657" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Sensor-Tower-Data-Collection.jpg 990w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Sensor-Tower-Data-Collection-300x199.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Sensor-Tower-Data-Collection-768x510.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Sensor-Tower-Data-Collection-696x462.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Sensor-Tower-Data-Collection-633x420.jpg 633w" sizes="(max-width: 990px) 100vw, 990px" /></p>
<p>However, Apple has now removed Adblock Focus while <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/google">Google</a> has removed Mobile Data after being contacted by BuzzFeed News. The companies are further conducting an investigation regarding this.</p>
<p>Here is how it all worked. When Sensor Tower&#8217;s app gets installed on the device, it asks users to install a root certificate, which enables Sensor Tower to monitor all traffic and data passing through the phone.</p>
<h6 class="related"><strong>EDITOR&#8217;S PICK: <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/03/10/xiaomi-rolls-out-android-10-stable-update-for-poco-f1-with-february-2020-patch/">Xiaomi rolls out Android 10 Stable update for POCO F1 with February 2020 patch</a></strong></h6>
<p>Sensor Tower bypasses Apple and Google&#8217;s restrictions on root certificate privileges by requiring users to install the certificate through an external website. The company says that it only collects anonymised usage and analytics data.</p>
<p>Interestingly, none of the applications have been tied to Sensor Tower on the App Store as they were listed under other company names. They were tied to Sensor Tower after BuzzFeed realised that the apps “contain code authored by developers who work for the company.” <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple">Apple</a> spokesperson has confirmed that a dozen of Sensor Tower apps have been removed from the App Store due to violations.</p>
<p>Randy Nelson, Sensor Tower’s head of mobile insights, explains that the “vast majority” of the apps are “defunct and a few are in the process of sunsetting.” He doesn&#8217;t admit that the apps are now defunct because they were removed for policy violations.</p>
