Tesla has unveiled a new rear-wheel drive version of their Model 3 for the Singapore market, called the “Drive 110”. This version prioritizes affordability over raw performance, making it a potentially attractive option for Singaporean consumers due to the country’s unique car ownership regulations.

The new Model 3 sacrifices some performance for that lower price tag.

This new version boasts a lower price tag of SGD 69,300 (approximately 372,700 Yuan) compared to the standard rear-wheel drive variant. However, it sacrifices some performance with a total power output of 110 kW and a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 8.6 seconds (compared to 6.1 seconds for the standard model). Interestingly, both versions share the same WLTP driving range of 513 km.

Whether this version will be available in mainland China remains unclear, as it’s specifically designed to comply with Singapore’s regulations.

So, why the “Drive 110”? Singapore’s car ownership system requires bidding for a Certificate of Ownership (COE) before purchasing a vehicle. There are two COE categories: Class A (up to 110 kW) and Class B (above 110 kW). Class A COEs are significantly cheaper. Taking both the COE cost and car price into consideration, the “Drive 110” with its Class A COE becomes the more affordable option for Singaporean consumers, despite the reduced performance compared to the standard rear-wheel drive version.

ChatGPT has become the world’s fastest-growing technology, as the service has reached over 100 million users in 2 months. Whilst other countries such as France and Australia aim to restrict ChatGPT for educational use in their respective regions, the wealthy Asian city-state of Singapore has taken on a rather different approach. On February 12th, 2023, the Singaporean government expressed progressive plans to integrate ChatGPT use into the teaching and learning in the country’s schools and institutes of higher education.

According to a local newspaper The Strait Times, Singaporean Education Minister Chan Chun Sing told the country’s Parliament that there are also professional discussion groups among educators to explore the use of AI tools to enhance learning among students. The Singaporean Ministry of Education (MOE) is guiding teachers in classrooms on how to use artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT to enhance learning, given that these tools are likely to become pervasive over time.

The minister likens ChatGPT to a calculator for learning mathematics but said that ChatGPT can be a useful tool for learning only when students have mastered basic concepts and thinking skills. This is why the Singaporean MOE will also equip students with the skills to use AI tools responsibly, he added.

When asked what measures were put in place to prevent cheating using AI, the Education Minister said that the country’s institutes of higher learning have varied modes of assessment – such as examinations, presentations, and projects – which require analysis, field notes and observational details that cannot be generated easily by AI technology.

Mr Chan also added that there are skills such as self-directed and collaborative learning and inventive thinking that are not easily replaced by technological tools, but are acquired through leadership roles, interdisciplinary project work and experiential learning.

As of publishing, Singapore is currently the first country globally to express its policymaking vocally in favour of implementing AI tools such as ChatGPT into its education system. Since 2015, the country is ranked academically first place in both Maths and Science subjects in the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study(TIMSS), administered by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement, a non-profit research cooperative based in Amsterdam. The National University of Singapore is also the highest-ranked university in Asia, ranking 11th globally, according to QS World University Rankings 2023.

Now, the Search Engine giant’s Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will be available for purchase in the Southeast Asian country. For those unaware, the Pixel 6 series was first announced back in October of 2021. So its launch in Singapore arrives around nine months since its official release, which is quite a long time. However, Google clearly believes that it is better late than never. Similarly, the company had even launched its current flagship in Italy and Spain as well, earlier this month.

The Pixel 6 and Pixel6 Pro will be available in Singapore through the Google Store (Via 9To5Google). This appears to be a quiet launch as Google had previously confirmed that the flagship phones were on their way to Singapore, and now we even have the official pricing as well. The Pixel 6 is available in Stormy Black and Sorta Seafoam. while the Pixel 6 Pro is available in Stormy Black and Cloud White.

Looking at their pricing, the Pixel 6 starts from 999 Singapore Dollars (roughly 742 US Dollars). On the other hand, the Pixel 6 Pro is available in the region for 1,299 Singapore Dollars (roughly 965 US Dollars). Google is also releasing the smartphones with the protective covers worth around 49 Singapore Dollars (roughly 36 US Dollars), Pixel Stand that costs 119 Singapore Dollars (roughly 88 US Dollars), and a 30W USB Type C charger worth 45 Singapore Dollars (roughly 33 US Dollars).

Earlier today (1st December 2021), Huawei has officially announced new smartwatches is set to launch in Singapore soon. The company is gearing up to launch the Watch GT 3 and the Watch GT Runner in the region later this month.

Watch GT 3

The Chinese tech giant will be launching the new Watch GT 3 series, which features a sleek and minimalistic design. This smartwatch model arrives in two size variants, including a 42mm and 46mm versions. The Watch GT 3 46mm offers a battery life of up to 14 days while the 42mm variant lasts for up to 7 days. Both versions also have an AMOLED panel along with a new PPG 5.0 module for heart rate and blood oxygen level detection as well.

It even arrives with support for TrueSleep 5.0 for sleep tracking and TruSeen 5.0+ for health and fitness monitoring. The Watch supports for 100+ workout modes, 18 professional modes and 12 outdoor workouts as well. Under the hood, the GT 3 houses 4GB of internal storage and 32MB of RAM alongside an accelerometer, gyroscope, geomagnetic sensor, barometer, dual-band 5 system GNSS, and a temperature sensor.

Watch GT Runner

Notably, the company is also launching a new smartwatch in the region, which is specifically targeted towards runners. This wearable is being marketed towards professional runners and offers a lightweight design with a high strength composite fiber watch case for improved durability. It even offers accurate GPS location tracking and weighs just 38.5 grams. This model also supports TruSeen 5.0+ and dual band 5 system GNSS as well. It features a 1.43 inch AMOLED display that runs on HarmonyOS, with support for third party applications like Kugou Music, Himalayas, AutoNavi Maps, Air Travel, and more. The smartwatch can last for up to 14 days with regular use and also supports wireless charging.

Huawei is set to launch the Wath GT 3 series and Watch GT Runner in Singapore on December 18. Pre-orders for both models are currently live till the 17th of December, with early buyers receiving the FreeLace wireless neckband earphones for free. Pricing for the GT 3 series smartwatches starts from 298 US Dollars while the Watch GT Runner is priced at 398 US Dollars.

Xiaomi has just entered into a strategic partnership that will have it sell its products through on-demand delivery service, foodpanda. Now, hundreds of electronic products from the company will be available for purchase on the foodpanda shops in Singapore and Thailand.

For those unaware, foodpanda is currently Asia’s largest food and grocery delivery network outside of China. The brand has now entered into a partnership with the Chinese tech giant and will offer a vast variety of consumer electronic products and appliances for on-demand deliveries in its shops in Singapore and Thailand. Furthermore, the foodpanda application will also be pre loaded in new smartphone from Xiaomi in 10 markets within Asia.

Notably, this marks Xiaomi’s first quick commerce partnership in Asia outside of China. So, you can now purchase hundreds of products like smart devices, audio, mobile accessories, household appliances, and more, which will all be delivered to your doorstep within just 30 minutes. Interestingly, the partnership also marks foodpanda’s move in diversifying and expanding to the non grocery category that will seek to fulfill every need of its customers.

The partnership arrives as more customers in both regions have shift their spending habits to the mobile platforms. foodpanda recorded a whopping 18 fold rise in orders for computers and mobile devices this year, compared to 2020. Chinese smartphone maker vivo debuted the vivo X50e 5G in late September in Taiwan. It is the cheapest 5G device in the vivo X50 series of handsets. This phone has now launched in Singapore as well. Priced at S$699 ($527), it will go on sale starting December 19 in the region.

The vivo X50e 5G is powered by the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset as the standard vivo X50 5G. But instead of a punch-hole display, it flaunts a 6.44-inch FHD+ (2,400 x 1080 pixels) AMOLED panel with a dew-drop notch and a fingerprint sensor underneath it.

Further, the back design of this handset is different than the rest of the vivo X50 series. Because it has the company’s older diamond-shaped camera module that includes a 48MP primary sensor, a 13MP 2x telephoto shooter, an 8MP ultra-wide snapper, a 2MP macro camera, and an LED flash. Razer, the company known for making gaming products, has revealed its plan to help people in the Singapore fight against the COVID-19. The company said that it will deploy 20 face masks vending machines across the country by the end of this month to distribute millions of masks for free.

It’s noteworthy that the company’s global operations are based in Singapore. The company’s CEO CEO Min-Liang Tan said that “Razer will continue our endeavours in supporting Singapore to be self-sufficient for face masks as a nation.”

To pick up a mask from the vending machine, the company says that users will have to download its digital wallet app and scan a QR code. Razer is already making masks and is now planning to double that production.

The company’s plan is to give all Singaporean adult residents one free surgical mask, which adds up to about 5 million in total. Once the program kicks off, more locations may be added as per the requirement.

The response from Razer comes as the country is experiencing an alarming second wave of coronavirus infections. It now has more than 23,822 confirmed cases, up from just a few hundred in March.

However, the company is also facing criticism on social media for the requirement of downloading Razer app to get face mask. People are suggesting that the company is trying to pick up more users for its fintech platform Razer Pay.

Responding to the criticism, Min-Liang Tan said that having users scan QR from the app “is the only way we’ll be able to ensure there’s no free for all on the masks … We’re funding this completely ourselves and would like to ensure there’s no fraud.”

Razer said on April 24th that it’s already shipped more than 1 million of those masks all over the world. With plan of offering 5 million masks for free in Singapore, the company is also partnering with plastic manufacturer Sunningdale Tech to up its production to 10 million masks a month.

The Razer phone is currently the buzz of the smartphone world. Since its release early this month, it has gotten mainly positive reviews which is impressive considering this is Razer’s first smartphone.

An official bulletin released by the manufacturer says pre-orders begin today and run till November 26. Sales will then commence on December 1. Pre-ordered units should probably ship before then.

The Razer Phone will sell for SGD 1,068 (~$793) in the Asian country via Singtel but will sell for less if you buy it with a plan. That price gets you a 5.7” QHD IGZO display with a 120Hz refresh rate, 8GB of RAM, and a Snapdragon 835 processor. You also get 64GB of storage, dual 12MP rear cameras, an 8MP front-facing camera and a 4,000mAh battery.

Razer has not announced when its phone will be available in other Asian markets.

The company has announced that it will establish its presence in around six new regions in the coming months. It will soon launch in Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong.

It also has plans to enter the Russian market. For establishing its presence in the African market, the company will start with Morocco and Kenya. Later, the company is expected to spread out to European countries as well.

Vivo has already established its presence in India, Thailand, Philippines, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Cambodia and Bangladesh.

The China-based smartphone manufacturer says that it aims to offer smartphones that “inspire confidence and self-expression in more young people”. It will continue to focus on camera performance and audio experience.

The company recently launched its flagship smartphone — Vivo V7+, which comes with a 24-megapixel front camera and FullView display. According to Gartner’s latest research, Vivo is ranked 5th in global smartphone sales in 2Q 2017 in terms of volume with 6.6% market share.

A study carried out by the United Nations University in Japan has revealed that the amount of e-waste in the Eastern and SouthEastern parts of Asia has increased by 63% between 2010 and 2015. The waste currently sitting at 12.3 million tonnes has Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and the Chinese Mainland as major waste generators.

The huge surge in e-waste has been attributed to the rapid rate at which the middle class in countries like China is growing. People can now afford to buy more electronics and easily replace faulty ones or outdated ones. It has also become cheaper and easier to import products.

According to the research, some countries don’t have e-waste laws or don’t enforce them. It is also not unusual to see people uneducated about proper disposal of electronic wastes and those who are educated find it difficult to do so since recycling locations are far and few.

It is not all that bad though as countries like Japan, South Korea and Taiwan are doing well when it comes to e-waste management. Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines and China have created laws related to e-waste disposal recently and should get better as public awareness increases.
