Huawei, known for its telecommunications prowess, has swiftly established itself as a major player in China’s growing smart car technology sector. Despite facing challenges in its smartphone business due to trade sanctions, Huawei has strategically shifted gears to become a key automotive supplier, unveiling its advanced driver assistance system, “Qiankun”, at the prestigious Beijing Auto Show.

The showcase of Qiankun comes after just four years of intensive development, marking a significant milestone for Huawei in the automotive industry. Seven Chinese automakers have already integrated Qiankun into their vehicles, solidifying its position as the premier advanced driver assistance system in China.

One of the most significant developments in Huawei’s automotive journey is its groundbreaking deal with Volkswagen. The China-made Audi Q6L e-tron, set for launch in 2025, will feature Huawei’s Qiankun system, marking Huawei’s first collaboration with a foreign automaker. This move underscores Huawei’s ambition to expand its footprint beyond domestic borders and compete on a global scale.

Huawei and BAIC partnership brand Stelato at Beijing Auto Show

Despite geopolitical tensions, foreign automakers are increasingly viewing Huawei as a potential ally in China’s fiercely competitive market. Huawei’s advanced ADAS technologies, coupled with its capability to produce its own chips, present an attractive proposition for enhancing competitiveness in the rapidly evolving automotive landscape.

However, Huawei’s ascent is not without its challenges. The company faced a supply crunch in 2024, delaying deliveries of flagship models. Moreover, trade restrictions, particularly from the U.S., pose risks to Huawei’s global expansion plans, raising concerns about the future of “connected” car technology.

Nevertheless, Huawei’s emergence has reshaped industry dynamics, with legacy automakers seeking tech partnerships to stay ahead in the race. Chinese state-owned giants such as Changan, Dongfeng, and BAIC have embraced Huawei’s ADAS technology to remain competitive in the fast-evolving market.

At the recent auto show, Huawei showcased a suite of cutting-edge technologies, including vehicle control units, LIDAR, telematics sensors, optical sensors, and an innovative audio system integrated into headrests for personalized music experiences.

As Huawei solidifies its position in China’s car market and expands its reach to foreign brands, the company’s journey in smart car technology promises to usher in a new era of innovation and collaboration.

After Huawei had its smartphone operations crippled due to the US sanctions, the company focused its efforts in various other fields, which included the automobile industry. However, it seems that the brand itself isn’t looking to build a car of its own.

Back in 2020, Ren Zhengfei, the CEO of the Chinese tech giant, stated the company does not plan on making its own cars. However, there were various rumors looming regarding Huawei possibly working on an electric/smart car of its own. Since then, the brand has even launched various systems that were featured on smart cars from other firms. Now, Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei’s Consumer BG has also reiterated the same information regarding the company’s plans for the automobile market.

As per the senior official, the brand will not be making its own cars. However, they will continue on expanding its smart car ecosystem and other technological solutions for other brands. Basically, one can expect to see more products like the Huawei Smart LNDU 4K Dashcam that supports HarmonyOS. It has also made smart displays for electric vehicles and also has its technology for AITO models as well.

The executive also added that the company will be closely cooperating with other automobile makers will also lead the market in China and turn into some of the more profitable names in the Chinese car market. He went on to talk more about the brand’s investment into its smart car tech solutions, but this clears the fact that a Huawei branded car is not in the works anytime in the near future.

The Chinese tech giant made the announcement during its OPPO Developer Conference 2021 event. Wu Henggang, the President of the brand’s software engineering division stated that the company has built the Carlink smart car solutions for smart travel. The new technology seeks to bring a new travel service experience that will be seamless while being interconnected across multiple terminals with hardware and software level optimizations.

The senior official also added that the company is targeting to ship the new system in 15 million cars by the year 2022. Notably, the Oppo Carlink is an all scenario mobility solution that will be available for not just four wheel cars but even two wheeled vehicles like scooters. It will offer functions like digital car keys, vehicle management tools through a smartwatch, and even an in car smart screen solution as well. The brand added that it has already started working with more than 70 partners that include automobile makers, two wheeler manufacturers, Tier 1 suppliers, and other automobile based service providers as well.

The President further added that Carlink is a part of the brand’s efforts in the smart car segment, in which it aims on developing and even accelerating the arrival of automotive solutions. Henggang also said that the smartphone and car systems are two independent systems that usually have no means of interaction. But now, Oppo seeks to change this by partnering up with various brands in the automobile industry and have launched the Open Alliance for Intelligent Connected Vehicles to establish a unified industry standard. Other members include major names like Vivo, Xiaomi, SAIC, Changan Automobile, and Geely.

While smart cars with self driving technology are already available, the company seeks to improve the overall driving and travel experience.

According to the patent titled “Smart Car Control Method, Device and Control System,” the Chinese tech giant is working on a smart car control system that could improve the autonomous technology behind self driving cars. As per an ITHome report, the patent also describes a system for controlling smart cars, which is capable of improving the comfort for passengers as well as the driving experience of the self driving smart car.

This system would control the smart car’s driving mode, its driving style, to reach the speed of the vehicle at an optimal level. Once it reaches this optimal speed, it would also shift the driving mode to maintain it. In simpler terms, it would effectively work in real time to make the experience smooth and comfortable for the passengers riding in the vehicle, including the one behind the wheel.

Unfortunately, this is still a patent at the moment so finer details regarding this smart control system are currently unknown. Furthermore, it is also unclear if the smartphone maker is actually working on such a product or is just covering all bases. So stay tuned as we will be providing updates when additional information or any notable development surfaces regarding this technology.

There has been a motley of such collaborations and partnerships in the auto industry in recent times, as car manufacturers seek innovative ways to maintain their niche amidst a growing need for smart and autonomous vehicles across the world. In this fast-evolving and tech-driven sector, both companies are expected to work jointly to design and manufacture smart cockpits for cars, making them be more responsive to the dynamics of having greater mobile and mobility applications suitable for autonomous driving. The evolving technology could be deployed to the process already started by Geely to have EV manufacturing capacity.

Geely, of recent, has been entering partnerships with key industry leaders as it continues its plans to have manufacturing capacity for smart cars and autonomous vehicles. The partnership with Tencent is the third such entered by Geely. Tencent Holdings has stakes in electric vehicle manufacturers, Tesla and Nio, and is developing smart car technologies for wider applications.

Geely, earlier this month, had said it is planning to launch an electric vehicle manufacturing company with Baidu, and thereafter form a separate entity with Foxconn as an outsourcing vehicle manufacturing company for automakers who may need to outsource the assembling component of their manufacturing process.
