<p>It has been a while since <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2021/06/23/lg-pivots-business-phone-electric-cars/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LG announced its exit from the smartphone market</a>, joining other defunct phone brands like Nokia. Although, it still offered support for its existing lineup of devices. But now, the brand&#8217;s smartphones has finally reached the end of the line.</p>

<h2>LG to Shut Down Smartphone Update Servers in 2025</h2>

<p>The South Korean tech giant&#8217;s last flagship was the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/product/lg-wing-5g/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">LG Wing</a>, which <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2020/10/28/lg-wing-5g-dual-display-phone-and-lg-velvet-launched-for-rs-69990-948-and-36990-504/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">debuted way back in October 2020</a>. Following this, LG announced that it is pulling away from smartphones to focus on EVs in April 2021. The brand later sold all of its smartphone related patents to other smartphone OEMs like Oppo. While the mobile division shut down, support was still available for the latest gen LG devices. LG at least ensured update up to Android 12 on eligible smartphones. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="608" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/LG-Wing-Featured-02-1068x634-1-1024x608.jpeg?x44794" alt="LG Wing" class="wp-image-530042" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/LG-Wing-Featured-02-1068x634-1-1024x608.jpeg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/LG-Wing-Featured-02-1068x634-1-300x178.jpeg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/LG-Wing-Featured-02-1068x634-1-768x456.jpeg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/LG-Wing-Featured-02-1068x634-1-696x413.jpeg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/LG-Wing-Featured-02-1068x634-1-708x420.jpeg 708w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/LG-Wing-Featured-02-1068x634-1.jpeg 1068w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>LG Wing</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>But since then, there has not been any major update rolling out for any smartphone. There were still security patches that were promised for another three years. LG has announced that it is shutting down its smartphone update servers. Now, the company shared a warning a couple of weeks back. In its official forums post, LG shared appreciation for everyone who supported its mobile business and announced that it will close the mobile phone software upgrade (FOTA), update center, and LG Bridge service. </p>

<p>All of these services will go offline on 30th June 2025. This announcement likely doesn&#8217;t affect many users, but it marks the complete end of LG smartphones. You never know, certain LG devices might become collector&#8217;s pieces in a couple of years.</p>

<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-357690 " src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/BlackBerry-Classic-Non-Camera.jpg?x44794" alt="BlackBerry Classic Non Camera" width="576" height="477" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/BlackBerry-Classic-Non-Camera.jpg 664w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/BlackBerry-Classic-Non-Camera-300x248.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/BlackBerry-Classic-Non-Camera-507x420.jpg 507w" sizes="(max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px" /></p>
<p>The Canadian phone brand made the <a href="https://www.blackberry.com/us/en/support/devices/end-of-life" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>announcement</em> </a>earlier this week (Via <em><a href="https://9to5mac.com/2021/12/30/end-of-an-era-blackberry-ends-support-for-all-its-classic-smartphones/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">9To5Mac</a></em>). So now, all of the company&#8217;s classic smartphones that run<a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/blackberry-os/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> BlackBerry OS</a> or BB10 OS will no longer be supported. Furthermore, the brand has even warned its customers that they will no longer receive any patches to ensure that the carrier or WiFi connection remains functional. In other words, BlackBerry smartphone users might lose calling, cellular data, SMS, and emergency service call functionality.</p>
<p>Although, the same does not apply to the company&#8217;s smartphone models that run the Android operating system right now, with official support for these models ending on 4th January 2022. For those unaware, the company was one of the largest brands in the market before the entry of iPhones and before Android smartphones took over the world.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-242520 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/5beeccf022a6d28.jpg?x44794" alt="BlackBerry KEY2 red" width="700" height="440" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/5beeccf022a6d28.jpg 700w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/5beeccf022a6d28-300x189.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></p>
<p>Initially, veteran brands like <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/nokia/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Nokia</a> and BlackBerry didn&#8217;t believe that a full touchscreen phone would ever have a great impact on the market. But as we can see now, devices with physical keyboards have more or less been phased out completely. So with the end of the official support for BB smartphones, we can say that this marks an end of an era. Notably, we advise that users of BB devices back up all of their data as well, and also possibly prepare to shift to another brand soon.</p>

Prime Minister Tun Mahathir has recently stated that Malaysia will try to make use of <strong>Huawei</strong>’s technologies as much as possible. The remark was made during a dialogue session at The Nikkei Future of Asia Conference in Tokyo earlier last week.</p>
<p><div class="su-note" style="border-color:#e5e5e5;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;"><div class="su-note-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim" style="background-color:#ffffff;border-color:#ffffff;color:#333333;border-radius:3px;-moz-border-radius:3px;-webkit-border-radius:3px;"><b>Editor&#8217;s Pick: </b><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/05/15/oppo-reno-10x-zoom-edition-vs-huawei-p30-pro-which-one-is-better/"><b>OPPO Reno 10x Zoom Edition vs Huawei P30 Pro: Which One Is Better</b></a></div></div></p>
<p>According to the PM, this is due to the fact that big tech companies such as Huawei have research capabilities that are way bigger than the whole Malaysia combined. As for security risk, this is what he has to say:</p>
<p><em>“Yes, there may be some spying (and whatnot) but what is there to spy in Malaysia? We are an open book. Everybody knows, if any country wants to invade Malaysia, they can walk through, and we will not resist. Because it is a waste of time.”- Prime Minister, Tun Mahathir.</em></p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-256936" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/a6ceb58d-tun-mahathir-770x463.jpg?x44794" alt="" width="770" height="463" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/a6ceb58d-tun-mahathir-770x463.jpg 770w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/a6ceb58d-tun-mahathir-770x463-300x180.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/a6ceb58d-tun-mahathir-770x463-768x462.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/a6ceb58d-tun-mahathir-770x463-696x419.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/a6ceb58d-tun-mahathir-770x463-698x420.jpg 698w" sizes="(max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px" /></p>
<p>In general, this is a huge sign of confidence that the Malaysian government has for Huawei. All in all, it looks like Huawei’s status in Malaysia still remain intact regardless of the ban that the United States government has imposed on the company.</p>
<p>Just earlier this week, Huawei’s membership in important technologies groups such as <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/05/29/huawei-reinstated-to-sd-and-wifi-associations-list-of-partners/">SD Association, Bluetooth SIG, Wi-Fi Alliance, and JEDEC</a> has also been reinstated. Things certainly have looked much better for Huawei right now just as the company filed a court motion to have the ban to be <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2019/05/29/huawei-wants-us-courts-to-declare-trump-federal-ban-unconstitutional/">declared unconstitutional</a>.</p>
