Streaming has become the most popular way to consume content. Smart TVs and streaming devices play an important role in the rising popularity of OTT platforms. A recent report on TV and video streaming devices across 27 major countries by Strategy Analytics reveals that Samsung not only leads in streaming device market share in these regions but its operating system Tizen, a gateway to streaming services also top the chart.

Though this report was published on September 2, it is worth noting that it is for Q1 2020.

Streaming Devices

According to Strategy Analytics, Samsung was the leading streaming device brand in the first quarter of 2020 in 27 major countries with 14% of devices in use. Whereas, second and third positions were held by Sony and LG with 12% and 8% market share respectively.

Further, Hisense, TCL, and Amazon tied at fourth position with 5% market share each, followed by Nintendo and Microsoft at fifth position with 4%.

Interestingly, in sixth place with 3%, there were a total of seven brands such as Skyworth, Google, Vizio, Sharp, Roku, Philips, and Xiaomi. Also, with 2% in seventh place, there were four brands like Apple, Changhong, Panasonic, and Konka.

Whereas, the ninth position was captured by Haier, Toshiba, and Insignia with a 1% share. The remaining 9% was held by others category, which includes brands with negligible market share.

Streaming Platforms

Talking about streaming platforms, once again, Samsung lead in these 27 markets with 11% share with its Tizen OS. But the second position was held by platforms of both LG and Sony namely WebOS and Sony Playstation with 7% share each.

Roku TV OS and Fire OS tied at third position with 5% market share, followed by Android TV and Microsoft Xbox in the fourth place with 4% share.

Google Chromecast came at fifth position with 3% share while Apple tvOS and Firefox OS clashed with each other in the sixth place with 2% market share. The remaining 49% was occupied by platforms in the others category.

Takeaways

One thing is obvious from this report that the leading streaming device manufacturers also top the chart in streaming platforms if they have any. Also, a plethora of TV manufacturers gained some share in the devices category. Most of them use Android TV but still, Google’s streaming platform only accounted for 4%.

Anyway, this report only includes data from 27 major countries. Even though, the number of active devices in these regions is an astonishing figure at 1.14 billion.

Apple has started a wave of update rollouts for its iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, and watchOS software platforms. These updates bring a lot of new updates and fixes across the Cupertino-based company’s product ecosystem. For the iPhone, iOS 13.3 has been rolled out while the iPad receives iPadOS 13.3. Alongside this, even the watchOS for Apple Watch and tvOS for its Apple TV received an update as well.

The New iOS 13.3 & iPadOS 13.3

Apple has rolled out updates for two of its most popular platforms, namely the iPhone and iPad, in just under a month. Previously, the company had freshly introduced iOS 13.2.3 and iPadOS 13.2.3. The new update also brings many bug fixes and performance optimizations but also adds new features to the devices as well.

One of these is the new Parental control which provides additional communication limits to parents. This lets parents choose who their children can call, message or FaceTime. The new additions are an extension of the Screen Time feature which was introduced back in iOS 12 last year and lets parents directly manage contacts from their children’s devices. For those looking for this feature, it can be found through the Communication Limits section from the Screen Time settings.

Additionally, iOS 13.3 and iPadOS 13.3 brings support for NFC, USB, and Lightning FIDO2-compliant security keys. This can be used for securely browsing websites on Safari and other platforms like Dropbox, Facebook, Gmail, and Twitter. In other words, the update adds a physical security key to your iPhone and iPad which allows for better account privacy and protection across social media and emails.

Those seeking to update their iPhones and iPads can check if their devices have any pending updates by going to Settings>General>Software Update.
Note: Make sure to have your device connected to a Wi-Fi and that it has an ample supply of battery life remaining.

The New tvOS 13.3 and watchOS 6.1.1

Alongside the iPhone and iPad update, Apple also rolled out software upgrades for its Apple TVs and its Apple Watches. tvOS 13.3 brings new settings that allow users to bring back the “Up Next” queue to your Apple TV home screen which was removed in tvOS 13. Now, users can switch between showing “What to Watch” and “Up Next” section.

Lastly, Apple launched watchOS 6.1.1 for every compatible Apple Watch models. The new update claims to provide “important security updates” but apart from this, it doesn’t bring any notable changes.

To download tvOS 13.3, users have to open Settings>System>Software Updates. For watchOS 6.1.1, users must look for My Watch Tab on the Watch app which is available in the iPhone and then visit General>Software Updates.
Note: Your Apple Watch should have at least 50 percent battery life remaining or charge it when updating.
