Picture this: a computer sitting in a lab, essentially “thinking up” brand new forms of life from scratch. That’s exactly what just happened at Stanford and the Arc Institute, where researchers used artificial intelligence to design viruses that can actually kill bacteria. And yes, these AI-created viruses work in real life.

Here’s how wild this is, it’s the first time anyone has used AI to dream up an entire viral genome from nothing. No copying nature’s homework, no tweaking existing designs. Pure digital creativity turned into living biology.

The AI system, called Evo, works kind of like ChatGPT, except instead of being trained on books and articles, it learned from 2 million different virus genomes. When researchers asked it to design new versions of a simple virus called phiX174, Evo created 302 completely original genetic blueprints. The kicker? Sixteen of them actually came to life in the lab and successfully infected E. coli bacteria.

“This was like watching digital code become biology,” said Brian Hie, who runs the lab. You can practically hear the excitement, and maybe a little nervousness, in his voice.

The potential upside is huge. We’re talking about supercharged treatments for antibiotic-resistant infections, which kill hundreds of thousands of people every year. Imagine having an AI design custom viruses to hunt down specific bacteria that antibiotics can’t touch anymore. Or think about gene therapy, using these designer viruses as tiny delivery trucks to fix genetic diseases.

But here’s where things get uncomfortable. J. Craig Venter, basically the godfather of synthetic biology, didn’t sugarcoat his concerns. He called this “a faster version of trial and error” and warned that the same technology could potentially be misused to create much nastier viruses than simple bacteria killers.

Right now, Evo only knows about viruses that don’t harm humans. But the underlying technology? That could theoretically be retrained on more dangerous stuff. It’s like having a recipe generator that currently only knows how to make cookies, but could learn to make dynamite if someone fed it the wrong cookbook.

We’re still years away from AI creating entire synthetic cells, those would need millions of genetic letters instead of the thousands in these simple viruses. But companies like Ginkgo Bioworks are already working on fully automated systems that could go from AI design to living organism without human hands touching the process.

It’s honestly breathtaking and unsettling at the same time. We might be witnessing the moment when life itself becomes programmable, when the line between digital code and biological reality finally disappears. The question isn’t whether this technology will change everything, it’s whether we’re ready for what comes next.

Dyson just held a briefing where it showed results of its study into dust and the various effects it has in our lives. But perhaps more interestingly, the study also found that most Indians are quite aware of viruses, yet are struggling with an effective ways of dealing with them. So let’s have a look.

Dyson: 1 in 2 Indians are aware of viruses in dust

The known brand behind advanced home appliances like air purifiers, vacuum cleaners, hair dryers and much more, shared the Dyson Global Dust Study 2023. In this survey, the company made detailed studies into the dust that is all around us, cleaning habits across the globe, and even dust related awareness. In the study that had nearly 35,000 participants from 39 countries, the study found that Indians were some of the more aware for viruses, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

But despite most Indians being aware, the study found that only 1 in 7 Indians had effective ways in eliminating this virus in their homes. To elaborate, the dust here in question specifically refers to household dust that carries common allergy triggers. The survey showed that just 33% of participants knew that pollen could reside in household dust, while just 32% knew that dust even contains dust mite feces.

To combat these invisible hazards, Dyson and its team has worked for decades to develop cutting edge technology to improve floorcare and cleaning. In the briefing, Nathan Lawson McLean, Design Manager for Floorcare Design Engineering at Dyson showcased the technology that powers its latest products. This includes new cord free vacuum cleaners like Dyson V15 model, which arrives with five stage filtration systems that can capture dust as tiny as 0.1 microns while also offering a robust fully sealed body.

In a recent advisory, India’s national cybersecurity organization, CERT-IN, has warned about a dangerous Android malware called “Daam” that poses a significant threat to user data security. This malware has the ability to bypass antivirus software, steal sensitive information, and even install ransomware on targeted devices.

The Threat of Daam Malware: Understanding the Risks and Implications

Once infiltrated, the Daam malware can access and retrieve a wide range of confidential data, including browsing history, call logs, contact information, camera contents, SMS messages, and files. It operates by circumventing security measures, making it challenging to detect and remove. The stolen data is then transmitted to the attacker’s server, and the device’s contents are encrypted using AES encryption, leaving behind “.enc” files and a ransom note named “readme_now.txt.”

For safeguarding Android devices against the Daam malware and similar risks, CERT-IN has offered crucial best practices and recommendations:

Limit Download Sources: Minimize the risk of downloading potentially harmful apps by relying on official app stores, such as the manufacturer’s or operating system’s app store.

Review App Details: Before downloading an app, even from trusted sources like the Google Play Store, thoroughly review its details, including user reviews, number of downloads, comments, and additional information.

Verify App Permissions: Pay close attention to the permissions requested by apps and grant only those that are necessary and relevant to the app’s intended functionality. Avoid granting unnecessary permissions that may compromise privacy.

Avoid Side-loaded Apps: Refrain from installing apps from untrusted or unofficial sources. Stick to reputable and trusted sources for app installations.

Keep Your Device Updated: Regularly install updates and patches provided by your device’s vendor, as they often include critical security enhancements.

Exercise Caution Online: Avoid browsing untrusted websites or clicking on suspicious links. Be especially cautious with links received through unsolicited emails or SMS messages, as they may lead to malware downloads or malicious websites.

Use Antivirus Software: Install and regularly update reliable antivirus and antispyware software on your device to detect and prevent malware infections.

Verify SMS Sender Information: Be vigilant for suspicious numbers that do not resemble genuine mobile phone numbers. Legitimate SMS messages from banks often include sender IDs rather than phone numbers.

Research Before Clicking Links: Conduct thorough research before clicking on any links, particularly in messages. Utilize websites that allow phone number searches to verify the legitimacy of numbers or identify potential scams.

Verify URLs: Only click on URLs that clearly indicate the website domain. If unsure, use search engines to directly search for the organization’s official website to ensure legitimacy.

Utilize Safe Browsing Tools: Consider using safe browsing tools and filtering services offered by antivirus, firewall, and content-based filtering software.

Exercise Caution with Shortened URLs: Approach shortened URLs, such as those using bit.ly or tinyurl, with caution. Hover over the link to view the full website domain or utilize a URL checker to verify the destination.

Check Encryption Certificates: Ensure the presence of valid encryption certificates by looking for the green lock symbol in the browser’s address bar. Verify proper security measures before sharing any sensitive information online.

Report Suspicious Activity: Promptly report any unusual account activity to the respective bank or service provider, providing relevant details for appropriate action to be taken.

By adhering to these guidelines and best practices, users can significantly reduce their vulnerability to the Daam malware and related threats. It is essential to remain vigilant and prioritize the protection of devices to safeguard personal data and maintain online security.

How to Protect Your Android Device from the Guerrilla Virus

The security of Android devices has been a topic of debate for years. Google has indeed implemented measures to protect against system vulnerabilities, but there have never been genuinely effective steps taken concerning malicious third-party applications on the Google Play Store. This inevitably labels the security of Android devices as “dubious”. A report published last week has further inflamed this issue. It claimed that many Android devices are shipped to consumers with malicious software pre-installed, which has led Android users to regard their phones with suspicion.

The initial report came from cybersecurity firm Trend Micro. The company examined 50 different Android device models during their investigation. The findings were quite alarming. According to the report, 8.9 million Android devices were found to be infected with malicious software. The identity of the harmful software was also revealed.

Another cybersecurity firm, Sophos, named the identified application as Guerrilla. Like a detective, Sophos tracked the path of the Guerrilla app, and the resulting findings were equally disturbing. The reason being that Guerrilla was found within the infrastructure of 15 different applications in the Google Play Store.

What Guerrilla essentially does is simple. It opens a backdoor on your phone under the guise of an “update notification” within the application it’s housed. This allows unwanted harmful software to be downloaded onto your phone, presenting them as updates. The downloaded malicious software then affects aspects like your phone’s battery life, performance, or the advertisement content that appears.

Phones that contain Guerrilla generally exhibit low battery life and performance features. The advertisements that users encounter are often irrelevant to them and can be categorized as obscene content. The countries where virus-infected phones are most common currently include the United States, Mexico, Indonesia, Thailand, and Russia. As for the situation in Turkey, there’s no answer yet. No security company has named the brands or applications that house these harmful applications. The only known fact is that they frequently appear on mid-range and lower-range devices.

• Never open any attachments which you receive through spam emails. Also, just delete those spam emails without opening them.

• Never download songs, movies, and other kinds of stuff from unsafe websites.
• Also, never tap on the pop-ups which you receive on your screen.

How to remove IDP.Generic viruses from your PC

There are a lot of ways to remove viruses from your PC. We are here in a few ways which you can use on your PC. Today, we will be introducing two different software that you can trust and help you guys remove the virus. But before that, we will recommend you guys make a Disk cleanup, a default application in Windows 10. If you don’t know how to do the same, follow the below-mentioned instructions.

Using Disk Cleanup Feature

• For this, type Disk Cleanup in the Windows search and then press the Enter key on your keyboard.
• Once it opens, select the drive which you want to clean. Since C: is the main drive by default in every system, it is likely to be that one that will contain the malicious files.
• Now, scroll through the Files to delete the list and select the following ones.

1. Temporary Internet Files
2. Downloads
3. Recycle Bin
4. Temporary files

• If you have selected these files, now tap on the Cleanup system files option.
• Once you finish that, you can also look for other malicious or virus-containing files hidden in the following folders, and for this open, Run by pressing Windows Key + R and type these folder names in the dialogue box.

2. %LocalAppData%
3. %ProgramData%
4. %WinDir%

• After entering these folder names one by one, press Enter so it will open the folders. Once it opens, delete every file which you find inside the same.
• If everything is done, restart your PC. Then you are good to go.
• Sometimes the above method will not be efficient to deal with malicious files, so use the following software to remove those things from your PC.

Using Malwarebytes Free version

• For this, first, download the software from their official website.
• Once it has been downloaded, install the same on your PC. It will ask for permissions to modify the system, and you should permit that.
• There will be many on-screen instructions, and you can install them by following those things. The setup will ask if it’s your Work computer or personal computer.
• Select according to your wish and then continue the installation process.
• Once the program opens, tap on the Get Started button to start the process. It will ask for you to choose between free and premium versions. You can buy the premium version if you can afford it. But for our use, the free version is more than enough. So tap on the free button.
• Now tap on the Scan button to start scanning, and the application will scan the entire files on your PC.
• Like any other app, it will take some time to scan the whole file. It’ll show a Quarantine button if it has found any viruses after reviewing. Tap on the same to delete those viruses. It will delete those malicious files and registry keys.
• Restart your PC to complete the process.

HitmanPro: You can use the same to scan for malware and other unwanted programs

As the name suggests, it’s a Pro application which you need to purchase. However, you can scan things without the Pro version. And if you guys find any viruses on your device, you can remove the same by activating the trial for 30 days.

• You can download HitmanPro.
• Like the above process, install the same on your PC.
• Follow the on-screen instructions and finally tap on Next to start scanning.
• Wait for a few minutes to complete the scan and then tap on Next to remove the malicious files.
• You can activate the free license for 30 days from here.
• After activating the free license, it will start the process of removing those files.
• Restart your PC after the process ends.

How to fix IDP.Generic false alert?

We hope you guys remember what we said initially, and there will be a false alert by your Antivirus software. Even after doing the above steps, you may receive a warning from your Antivirus software because the above software and steps will only work if your device has been affected. It will not deal with false alerts. So, as we said, mostly Avast users get these kinds of wrong positive signals. You can follow the steps mentioned below to solve the same.

• Before the process, launch the Avast Antivirus on your PC.
• Once it opens, you can see a protection icon to the left side of the App interface. Tap on the same to continue.
• Now, you guys should search and find Virus Chest’s option, which you can see under the Protection tab.
• Finally, please give it a right-click on the file which has been detected with IDP.Generic virus and then tap on the “Restore and add to exclusion” option. It will unlock your file, and the file will be restored to the original location.

In the report, the research team “found a piece of a particularly sophisticated Android ransomware with novel techniques and behavior, exemplifying the rapid evolution of mobile threats that we have also observed on other platforms. The mobile ransomware, detected by Microsoft Defender for Endpoint as AndroidOS/MalLocker.B, is the latest variant of a ransomware family that’s been in the wild for a while but has been evolving non-stop.”

This ransomware family has been known for a while and has been found on various websites and has been circulating online through forums, various pop up ads, cracked games, and other forms of media. According to the PhoneArena report, the report also added that “the new variant caught our attention because it’s an advanced malware with unmistakable malicious characteristic and behavior and yet manages to evade many available protections, registering a low detection rate against security solutions.”

Furthermore, the hackers apparently are “evolving” this malware by using various accessibility features and the virus is continuously getting better at its intended purpose. Viruses and malware aren’t just for laptops and computers, with the number of smartphone users growing, the amount of harmful software like ransomware has been growing. According to a new report, Indians are one of the most affected by the macOS malware called Shlayer. This is one of the most widespread macOS malware in 2019 and has infected the most number of devices in the Southeast Asian subcontinent.

Kaspersky, a cybersecurity expert, reported that Shlayer utilizes a smart malware distribution system that allows it to spread via a partner network, entertainment websites and even Wikipedia. This showcases the scale of the rampant malware is and that even established and well known websites are infected and need additional security measures put in place.

In the data, it is seen that India arrives second only to the US in terms of the total number of affected users. The former sits at 18.9 percent while the latter has a massive 31 percent, with numbers further expected to grow. Similarly, Germany ranks third with 14 percent while France and the UK trail behind with 10 percent each respectively.

Anton Ivanov, Kaspersky Security Analyst, stated that “The macOS platform is a good source of revenue for cybercriminals, who are constantly looking for new ways to deceive users, and actively use social engineering techniques to spread their malware. This case demonstrates that such threats can be found even on legitimate sites.” But, “Luckily for macOS users, the most widespread threats that target macOS currently revolve around feeding illicit advertising rather than something more dangerous, such as stealing financial data.”

In other words, macOS platform is an active target for cybercriminals which aim to make a profit by selling services based around advertising and other forms of illegal and unavoidable branding. Meaning, Apple users currently do not face any major risk apart from a few annoying pop up ads and more but the fact that it is possible might eventually lead to further harmful malware in the near future.

As of right now, the malware is only based around installing adware that modifies search results, gather user search history and feed illicit advertisements without user consent. Furthermore, Shlayer attacks reportedly account for nearly a third of all malware infections on the macOS; and are also responsible for the installation of other adware like AdWare.OSX.Bnodlero, AdWare. OSX.Geonei, AdWare.OSX.Pirrit and AdWare.OSX.Cimpli.
