A Vivo phone with the model number V2317A was recently approved by the TENAA authority in China. The listing revealed the complete specifications of the phone, along with its images. It has finally been officially released under the name Vivo Y12. Here’s a look at what’s in store for buyers of the Y12.

Vivo Y12 4G specifications and features

The Vivo Y12 4G features a 6.56-inch LCD waterdrop-notch display that offers an HD+ resolution of 720 x 1612 pixels. Under the hood, it is powered by the MediaTek Helio G85 chip, accompanied by 6 GB of LPDDR4x RAM. The device offers ample storage with 128 GB of eMMC 5.1 storage, expandable via a microSD card slot.

In terms of imaging capabilities, the Vivo Y12 features a dual-camera setup on the rear, consisting of a 13-megapixel primary lens, a 2-megapixel depth sensor, along with an LED flash, complemented by an 8MP front camera for capturing detailed selfies. Chinese smartphone maker vivo launched the vivo Y12 budget smartphone in India in June 2019. The handset debuted with Funtouch OS 9 based on Android 9.0 Pie. The device was later updated to Android 10-based Funtouch OS 10. Now, it has even started receiving the Funtouch OS 11 (Android 11) update in the country.

The vivo Y12 is a sub-₹15,000 budget smartphone targeted at offline channels. Hence, its specs are mediocre but it features a striking design. Interestingly, the phone is still on sale nearly two years after its release.

It is powered by MediaTek Helio P22 SoC and was announced with Funtouch OS 9 (Android 9.0 Pie). For those unaware, vivo is not known for providing platform updates. Most of its phones only get a single Android update.

Hence, no one would have thought that this handset will be getting the Android 11 (Funtouch OS 11) update after the Funtouch OS 10 (Android 10) update last year.

According to a report by PiunikaWeb, the vivo Y12 Android 11 update is currently under greyscale testing. That means it is only available for a select few users. If these early adopters don’t face any major issues, the update will be made available for more users in the coming days.

That said, the software build that is live right now comes with build number vivo rev 6.71.46. Interestingly, it weighs a whopping 3.68GB in size. Hence, users are advised to have enough free space before hitting the ‘Download and Install’ button.

Vivo is working on a new mid-range phone named Vivo Y12s (model number V2026). The handset has bagged multiple certifications in the recent past and now it has appeared with key specs at the Google Play Console. These findings suggest that the Vivo Y12s will go official soon.

The Vivo Y12s has been certified by various authorities like Indonesia’s TKDN, Russia’s Eurasian Economic Commission, and China’s China Quality Certification. The other Indonesia Sertifikasi platform confirmed that the V2026 model number is associated with the Vivo Y12s smartphone. The Google Play Console listing of the device has revealed that it is powered by MediaTek MT6765 i.e. the Helio P35 chipset and 3 GB of RAM.

A few hours ago, we saw the debut of the Vivo Y12, which we consider as one of the most interesting affordable phones due to its mammoth battery. That is why we thought it is worth comparing it with other affordable devices which are making a big success in the actual market. The perfect candidates for this comparison are the wonderful Redmi 7 which is one of the best devices in terms of quality-price ratio, and the Nokia 4.2 which is one of the most affordable handsets with Android One installed.

Vivo Y12 vs Redmi 7 vs Nokia 4.2

Design

Due to its high screen-to-body ratio and its reflective glass back, my favorite phone among these ones is the Vivo Y12. On the other side, Xiaomi Redmi 7 is not so different, and it is even splash resistant, so it may represent a better choice for a lot of people. Nokia 4.2 is the compact one and it is one of the smallest last-generation phones. However, its bezels are not so narrow, at least not as narrow as the ones of its rivals, despite the presence of a waterdrop notch.

Display

The display is usually a weak point of entry-level smartphones, and that is more or less the same when it comes to this trio. All of them come with just an HD display and they do not have a high pixel density. The Nokia 4.2 looks slightly more detailed, but just because it shows the same resolution on a smaller screen. Vivo Y12 has the biggest display, you may need to know it if you want to use your phone for multimedia or productivity purposes. For the rest, they all are just affordable panels with sufficient quality.

Specs & Software

If you want the fastest and smoothest phone, do not think twice and go for the Xiaomi Redmi 7. With its Snapdragon 632 chipset and up to 4 GB of RAM, it is able to provide up to midrange-class performances. Both Vivo Y12 and Nokia 4.2 are equipped with entry-level chipsets, but the latter comes with Android One out of the box: a stock version of Google’s operating system with a great software optimization and faster updates. Note that, if you choose the Nokia 4.2, you can only get up to 3 GB of RAM, while Vivo Y12 is slightly better as it is equipped with up to 4 GB of RAM in the most expensive configuration.

Camera

You will not get a high photo quality with any of these handsets, but if we had to choose the best camera phone, we would go for the most versatile one: the Vivo Y12. It is the only to sport a triple camera, and it even has pretty nice sensors for an entry-level device, including a useful ultrawide lens.

Battery

Vivo Y12 mainly focuses on battery life: by implementing a 5000 mAh battery on such an entry-level device, Vivo surely guaranteed up to three days of battery life on a single charge. There should not be so many phones in the entire market which can reach the same battery life as the Vivo Y12. Right after, there is Redmi 7 which still comes with outstanding battery life, despite it does not arrive at the level of the wonderful Vivo Y12. The battery capacity of the Nokia 4.2 is still above-average, but there is no way 3000 mAh can compete with 5000 or even 4000 mAh.

Price

If you want a unit of the Vivo Y12, you are willing to pay about €160/$180. Xiaomi Redmi 7 starts from just €130/$147, while Nokia 4.2 costs €150/$170. In my personal opinion, the Redmi 7 is a more complete and performing device thanks to its better chipset and its well-balanced specs, despite Vivo Y12 has a more versatile camera department and a longer battery life.

Vivo Y12

The Vivo Y12 will have a 6.35-inch HD+ display. It will be powered by MediaTek’s MT6762 octa-core processor which is also known as the Helio P22. The phone will be available in two configurations – 3GB RAM + 64GB and 4GB RAM + 32GB. There should be a MicroSD card slot for storage expansion.

The Vivo Y12 will have a triple camera setup which is made up of a 13MP primary camera, an 8MP ultra-wide angle camera, and a 2MP depth sensor. It will have an 8MP front-facing camera too.

The phone will pack a massive 5000mAh battery but sadly, will have no fast charging technology.

Vivo Y15

The Vivo Y15 will have the same display and resolution as the Y12. It will also come with the same Helio P22 processor but have 4GB of RAM and 64GB of built-in storage.

Vivo is also using the same triple camera configuration of the Y12 for it. The phone will have a 16MP selfie-camera to distinguish it from the Y12. However, it will pack the same 5000mAh battery as the already launched Vivo Y17 but without its Dual-Engine fast charging technology.

Both the Vivo Y12 and Vivo Y15 are expected to come with FunTouch OS 9 based on Android Pie out of the box. An image of both phones shows they will have rear-mounted fingerprint scanners. They should also have support for Face Unlock.
