Latest YouTube TV Upgrade Brings Fresh Design and Improved Features

Google’s YouTube TV has quickly risen to become the largest live streaming service in the US by offering an entirely internet-based alternative to traditional TV subscriptions. Features like a la carte programming and a cheap 4K tier have helped drive growth since its launch in 2017, but a top-tier user experience has always been one of the service’s main strengths when compared to cable and satellite. To help maintain its edge in this category, YouTube TV is currently rolling out significant revamps to two of its interfaces users interact with most.

The Library and Live views at the top of the main menu are receiving updated looks and some new features in the latest update for the big-screen version of the app. The Live tab now has a more condensed layout in the programming list and a new set of curated recommendations across the top. Once you start scrolling, this is replaced by a summary and thumbnail of the highlighted show.

The Library tab is getting a new section aimed at helping you quickly “Catch up on your favorites” this represents YouTube TV‘s best guess for the shows, movies, and events you’ll want to jump into next. Filters are now placed below this new shelf of recommendations, and the rest of the shows in your library will be beneath that. In both views, long-pressing a title will now bring up a compact side sheet with relevant actions and a brief summary, and pressing the back button on your remote will simply dismiss this overlay without taking you away from the page you were previously viewing.

The changes to the Live tab appear to be available to all users already, but the Library tweaks are still in the process of rolling out. As with most YouTube TV interface updates, the switch should be made with a server-side update, so you’ll just need to reload the app when the Library changes do go live. These updates are a welcome addition to YouTube TV, as the service continues to improve and offer even more value to its users.

YouTube’s New Ad-Supported Streaming Service Offers Free TV Shows, Movies and Channels

YouTube is reportedly testing a new ad-supported streaming service that will allow users to stream TV shows, movies and channels for free. Google, the parent company of YouTube, is in talks with entertainment companies to test the concept. with few people. The new service is similar to apps like Pluto TV, which offers streaming TV shows from content providers like Paramount Movies and TV Land Drama.

Companies like Vizio and Roku already sell TVs that offer similar streaming services, but they earn more from advertising and subscription commissions than they do from selling hardware. YouTube is reportedly working with Lionsgate and A&E owns the History Channel FYI and Lifetime. Google demands a 45% cut of the ad revenue.

YouTube recently signed a deal with the NFL Sunday Ticket, and starting with the 2023-2024 season, the games will be shown on YouTube TV and YouTube Primetime Channels. Google currently has about 5 million subscribers, and YouTube TV offers more than 100 live TV channels for $64.99 each moon. Company may decide to market the free, ad-supported service under the YouTube TV brand.

The current trend in streaming services is to offer free or low-cost ad-supported tiers of service. Netflix Peacock Disney and HBO Max both have ad-supported tiers of service, and it looks like YouTube TV will be next. YouTube’s move also signals a shift in Google’s strategy. With a free, ad-supported streaming service, YouTube will be able to reach a wider audience, especially those who don’t want to pay for a subscription.

Additionally, the move fits with Google’s focus on advertising as the main source of revenue, as the company looks to diversify its revenue streams. As streaming services grow in popularity, more and more companies may look to offer free ad-supported tiers because It allows them to reach a wider audience while still generating revenue through advertising.

YouTube plans on launch its own streaming video service: Report

YouTube is apparently planning on expanding its operations by also releasing a new online store for streaming video service. The company has been in talks with entertainment based companies for this new business model.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, the popular video sharing platform is renewing its efforts in approaching media companies about participating in its new platform. The platform in question is basically the “channel store” as per sources close to the matter. Furthermore, the report stated that the tech giant has been working on this platform for at least 18 months by now and it could be released as early as this fall.

As of right now, Alphabet has yet to respond to any queries regarding this matter. Although, this move from YouTube doesn’t arrive as a surprise considering consumers across the globe have been shifting away from cable or satellite TV services to subscription based streaming services. In other words, the video sharing platform will soon compete against companies like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video services in the market.

Notably, the company also joins the likes of Roku Inc and Apple that are attempting to establish their spot on the video streaming market. Similarly, there have also been rumors regarding Walmart Inc has also held talks with media companies about including streaming entertainment in its membership service.

You can now use your Phone as a Second Screen for YouTube’s TV app

No doubt, watching YouTube on TV is pretty fun, you get to enjoy stuff on a big screen, but it comes with certain limitations. For instance, you cannot like, subscribe or share a Video from the YouTube TV app. This is because the remote controls are difficult to use and navigate. Also, most TVs don’t have a built-in web browser to support these features. To fix this issue, Google is rolling out a new feature that lets you connect your TV to your smartphone for better usability.

According to the announcement post on YouTube Blog, Google is releasing a new feature that will let users effortlessly connect the YouTube TV app to their iOS or Android phone to navigate and engage with the videos easily. In other words, you can now turn your phone into a second screen for YouTube on your TV.

To use this feature, you must sign in on your phone and TV with the same YouTube account. If you are signed in, Open the YouTube app on the TV, then go to the YouTube app on your phone, and click “Connect” on the prompt that automatically pops up.

Once connected, you can use your phone’s keyboard to search for videos to watch on your TV, or You can leave a comment on a video you’re watching on TV with your phone, or check the description of a video you’re watching on TV with your phone.

This new feature is similar to the Casting option that you might have used to cast a video from your phone to the TV. Google is now simply offering the same usability for videos that you find on your TV’s YouTube app. The rollout of this feature starts today, but it may take a while to reach your smartphone or TV.

YouTube TV is suffering from a freezing bug that affects smart TVs

The YouTube TV app on smart TVs has been facing an issue across the globe. The service has been freezing up for many smart TV users. This issue even appears to be affecting people across different platforms as well.

According to a 9To5Google report, users of smart TVs from multiple brands have reported on facing an issue with the TV app service. The freezing bug doesn’t just affect the content being streamed but also the platform itself. A temporary fix for the issue is to exit the app and restarting it from the home menu. As per the report, the issue first start surfacing a couple of days ago after the Roku update.

As of right now, this issue affects all sorts of streaming boxes, including Roku, Fire TV, Chromecast, Apple TV, Nvidia Shield, and others. Furthermore, the problem has also been affecting game consoles from the PlayStation and Xbox platforms, but the freezing bug has not been affecting smartphone and tablet users. Notably, the issue had first surfaced on Roku devices, with a common fix requiring users to remove the TV app from the device and reinstalling it.

Unfortunately, this might not be possible anymore as the TV app has been unavailable on the Roku Channel Store for months. But while Google had added a clever workaround in the standard YouTube app, its base service is also set to be removed from Roku next month, as both companies continue to feud.
