Just a few days ago reports of Samsung’s under-display camera or UDC were making headlines. Samsung plans to mass produce the technology soon. In reality, the South Korean tech giants are not the only players in the game. Oppo announced its plans for an in-screen camera setup in the recent past, followed by Xiaomi teasing their version of the technology on Twitter. The latest inputs from Xiaomi come from TigerMobiles that claim the Chinese electronics behemoth has filed for a patent for their in-display camera technology.

The patent granted by the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) on Sept. 30th depict the designs for a smartphone with an under-display dual-camera setup. If implemented successfully, the in-screen camera will phase out the notch, punch-hole and the numerous iterations of the pop-up selfie camera without hampering the screen-to-body ratio.

Most variations of the technology today involve increasing the transparency of the display in order to maximize the image quality. This is a major hurdle that the researchers are trying to overcome, since even the minute obtrusion in the display panel dissipates light, reducing the quality of the image.

The under-screen camera technology is still in its nascent stage. Manufacturers are expected to introduce the technology in budget and mid-range smartphones before implementing them on flagship devices.
