Amidst news of Huawei ban extension, many Chinese industrialists have shared their opinions on social media like Weibo. One of them was Li Nan, the co-founder and former senior vice president of Meizu. He said companies should not depend on globalization and free trade to succeed instead they should be self-reliant to some extent for worst-case scenarios.

Huawei’s ban was extended for another year last week by the US government. The White House is also moving ahead to cut the chip supplies to the Chinese telecom giant. In response, China is readying its own ‘Unreliable Entity List’ targeting American companies like Apple and Qualcomm.

To this, Li Nan recalled Meizu’s Blue Charm Metal smartphone, which did not feature any US-made technology. This device was powered by MediaTek X10 SoC and ran YunOS (based on AOSP) developed by the Alibaba Group. This handset was a successful product selling millions of units.

He also added that Meizu has been using Qualcomm chipsets merely for the last 3 years. He cited the company’s growth rate was much better when it didn’t use them. Further, Mr Nan said that it is time to gamble again to be self-reliant since we never know when anti-globalization and anti-free trade will creep in.

The Chinese government is yet to officially announce its move against the US. When it does, we expect the trade war to become more extreme than ever affecting a large number of companies.
