ZTE will be announcing the Axon 30 5G smartphone on July 27th in China. Last year, the Axon 20 5G was unveiled as the world’s first phone with an in-screen camera. Since it featured the first-generation under-display camera technology, it captured mediocre quality selfies. Today, the company shared a selfie camera sample of Axon 30 5G. The image suggests that its quality is not affected even though the front camera is hidden under the display.

The Axon 30 5G will be the first truly full-screen smartphone to debut this year. The Galaxy Z Fold3 and Xiaomi Mi MIX 4 are the other smartphones that are expected to arrive with an in-display camera in the next few weeks. While ZTE launched the Axon 20 5G that came with an in-screen camera last year, other companies are yet to release in-display camera smartphones.

Most high-end phones offer around 400ppi pixel density, and at this level, the light transmittance in the camera is very low, which affects the image quality of the in-screen camera. If the PPI is lowered and transmittance is increased, there will be a gap between the PPI of the display area and the PPI of the entire display. This will result in the phenomenon of color blocks in the display area where the camera is. This is the reason why it is difficult to mass produce the technology.

The company was able to effectively resolve the problem of poor imaging through four aspects such as pixels, chips, circuits, and materials. According to ZTE, the Axon 30 5G has a new independent UDC Pro screen display chip for enhancing and controlling pixels and to achieve the coordination and unity of the display.

The circuit transmits instructions to the pixels so that the display area of the in-screen camera can display normally when not taking pictures and remains transparent when taking pictures. Compared to the previous generation, the multi-drive ACE circuit layout adopted for the Axon 30 5G makes the transitions between the two regions more natural.

These enhancements allow the Axon 30 5G to offer a high density of 400ppi even in the under-display camera area. Well-known tipster Digital Chat Station claimed that it will be the cheapest in-display camera phone until next year.
