Apple has announced a replacement program for some iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro smartphones with faulty earpiece speakers. The faulty speakers in the two models have been traced to units produced between October 2020 and April 2021. Users have often reported that they are unable to get audio from their earpieces when making calls with their phones.

In an official statement, Apple says that it has already begun changing the faulty speakers for the two models, and encourages owners of such devices to use any of the available channels to get their devices fixed at no extra cost. The US tech powerhouse says that it has determined that only a small percentage of iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro units may experience audio issues due to possible component failure on the receiver module of their devices. If your iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro does not emit sound from the receiver during a call, you could possibly be among the few that have the stated problem, and your device could be eligible for the repair.

Users are advised to back up their phone data through any means, so as to be protected from a potential loss of such data. It is not clear how long the free speaker replacement program will last.

Apple did not put any figure as per the prevalence of faulty speaker modules. Apple owners who fall into the category, are encouraged to visit any of the Apple or Apple Authorized Service Providers or via the Apple Support Centre. The service is free and will cover only devices whose screens are yet to be damaged. Any unit that comes in with a faulty screen will have to resolve the screen issue before it will be repaired.
