Xiaomi’s independent POCO brand has got quite a handful of decent and affordable smartphone releases this year, more than we saw last year. The company is still expected to release a few more before the end of the year. However, the POCO X3 Pro, released in India in March this year, is in the news for the wrong reason. An Indian Twitter user Aman Bhardwaj (@Ammybhardwaj13) has reported that his POCO X3 Pro exploded just about 5 minutes after it was removed from the charger after a full charge. According to the victim, the phone was purchased barely two months ago. He also shared some images of the damaged phone and a receipt for the purchase. The receipt shows the phone was purchased on the 15th of June, 2021 from a third-party retailer but we cannot verify if it is an authorized dealer.

The images also show the phone’s charred remains with the battery bulging out, a sign that it is likely the battery must have exploded. The incident also burnt the blanket on the bed it was lying on when the explosion occurred.  Thankfully, no one was injured during the explosion neither did it result in a serious fire.

Poco India is yet to respond to the incident. We’ll keep you updated if any new development emerges. However, this incident brings to two the number of Poco X3 series units that have reportedly exploded. In April this year, a POCO X3 unit that was purchased in December 2020 went up in flames while charging. POCO India blamed the incident at the time on “external force”, claiming after a preliminary investigation that the battery was punctured leading to the explosion. We hope a thorough investigation will be conducted in this case.
