The Huawei Mate X2 foldable phone was launched earlier this year as the third foldable smartphone from the manufacturer. When it was announced, it was released in four colors, all of which have a glass back. A new report says Huawei is planning the release of a variant with a leather back.

According to the Chinese leaker, Digital Chat Station, the Huawei Mate X2 will get a plain leather version. Unfortunately, he didn’t state what color the leather will be.

Apart from having a leather-clad back, the new variant will have a Kirin 9000 5G processor and run HarmonyOS out of the box. If this doesn’t sound like news, it actually is. The Huawei Mate X2 5G launched with EMUI 11 based on Android 10 out of the box. Huawei also announced a 4G version of the phone with the same processor but it runs HarmonyOS 2 out of the box. Save for these differences, the rest of the specs remain unchanged.

The Huawei Mate X2 has a 6.45-inch 90Hz cover display with a pill-shaped cut-out that houses a single 16MP front-facing camera. The foldable display is 8 inches and also has a 90Hz refresh rate. Both screens are OLED.

The Kirin 9000 processor is paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB or 512GB of storage. There is a NanoMemory card slot for adding up to an extra 256GB of storage.

On the back of the phone are four cameras – a 50MP main sensor with PDAF and OIS, a 12MP sensor with OIS, PDAF, and a telephoto lens for 3x optical zoom, an 8MP sensor with a periscope telephoto lens for 10x optical zoom, and a 16MP sensor with an ultrawide angle lens. It also has a 4500mAh battery, support for 55W fast charging, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, NFC, and an IR blaster.

We do not know when this leather version will be announced but it may cost a bit more than the versions with a glass back.
