Chinese tech company Realme is currently the fastest-growing smartphone brand to date. It is also the fastest-growing Android 5G smartphone brand. With so many units in sales, you expect the firm to provide longer software support. Unfortunately, it’s not the case.
Recently, Realme’s Madhav Sheth was interviewed by Android Authority. Upon questioning about updates, the company executive revealed that the brand will stick with its old software policy.
In other words, Realme smartphones will continue to receive only up to two Android updates and three years of security updates. The exec backs this policy by claiming that the average lifecycle of today’s phones ranges from 24 to 26 months.
Do note that not all devices will be blessed with two Android updates. The maximum count will be only offered for flagships and select mid-rangers. Whereas, most of the portfolio will be either limited to a single Android update or none.
Just ahead of the Realme UI 3.0 announcement, the company disclosed that its handsets in China will only receive two years of maintenance updates. Back then, we expected the brand to announce a better software policy for international markets. Sadly, Realme didn’t make changes to its existing policy.
It is weird for Realme to stick with an outdated policy. That’s because its sister brands Oppo and Oneplus now provide up to three Android updates and four years of security updates like Samsung and Vivo. All three companies basically use the same software – ColorOS, and even share hardware.
We don’t understand why Realme doesn’t want to jump on the bandwagon when its biggest competitor Xiaomi also happens to have the same software policy as others.
