Honda has revealed its latest innovation, the third-generation Autonomous Work Vehicle (AWV), at the CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023 in Las Vegas. The all-electric, fully programmable AWV leverages Honda’s advanced autonomous technology to support construction activities, improve worksite efficiency, and address labor shortages in the industry. Here are the details…

Honda reveals all-electric autonomous off-road work vehicle

The AWV is designed to operate autonomously or manually via remote control, offering a wide range of services in environments where workforce constraints make other solutions impractical. Jason VanBuren, systems engineering manager at American Honda Motor Co., expressed the company’s intention to collaborate with businesses interested in field testing the vehicle at their worksites. Key features of the third-generation Honda AWV include:

  • Increased bed size and loading capacity of 2 pallets and 2,000 pounds, respectively.
  • Improved navigation using LiDAR sensors in areas with weak or unavailable GNSS service.
  • Simplified tablet-based programming interface and cloud connectivity.
  • Higher speed in autonomous mode, reaching up to 10 mph (16 kph).
  • Increased battery size, providing an operating time of up to 10 hours.
  • Enhanced avoidance function for vehicles stopped on road.
  • Lower bed for easier loading and improved ergonomics.

The AWV employs a suite of sensors, including GPS for location, radar and lidar for obstacle detection, and cameras for remote monitoring. Previous field tests have demonstrated the AWV’s ability to transport and deliver construction materials and supplies at precise points along a pre-set route. Honda utilizes common components from its automobiles and other products to optimize the AWV’s mobility technologies.

With the commercialization of the AWV in mind, Honda is actively seeking partners to participate in field testing, improve functions, and enhance services. The company is particularly interested in partnerships related to product distribution, aftermarket sales, and the development of software and attachments. By tapping into Honda’s decades of experience in developing safe, reliable, and clean mobility technology, the AWV has the potential to revolutionize the construction industry and reshape how work is carried out at job sites.
