Samsung is set to rebrand its content aggregator feature, Samsung Free, as Samsung News. The new name reflects an increased focus on news content and a shift away from the Watch and Play tabs. Samsung News will now combine the Read and Listen tabs to provide an updated experience that makes it easier for users to find and interact with news on their phones.
The feature, which was first pre-installed on Galaxy S21 flagships with One UI 3 in late 2020, aims to compete with Google Discover. Samsung News will offer users relevant news stories with just a single swipe on the Home screen.
This update is a clear indication that Samsung wants to compete with Google Discover and establish itself as a major player in the news aggregation space. It will be interesting to see how Samsung News is received by users and whether it can successfully rival Google’s popular content aggregator.
The update will be rolled out sequentially from April 18, starting with version 6.0.1 of the Samsung Free app. Samsung will continue to offer free TV and games through its TV Plus and Game Launcher apps, but with the removal of the Watch and Play tabs, it is clear that the company wants to focus on news content. This move could potentially attract more users to Samsung News, as it offers a more streamlined and focused approach to news aggregation.
