Apple has announced macOS 14 Sonoma, the latest operating system for Mac, during WWDC 2023 alongside iOS 17, and watchOS 10. This update brings a range of new features aimed at enhancing productivity, creativity, and gaming.

One of the key additions is interactive widgets, allowing users to place and interact with widgets directly on the desktop. This feature brings the iPhone widget ecosystem to Mac and enables users to perform tasks without opening specific applications.

The video conferencing experience is also improved in Sonoma, with features like Presenter Overlay, Reactions, and an improved Screen Sharing picker for seamless content sharing during video calls. Safari, the default web browser, receives updates as well, including enhanced privacy features, profile organization for browsing, and the ability to create web apps for quick access to favorite sites.

To enhance the visual experience, Sonoma introduces new screen savers featuring slow-motion videos of various locations around the world. Gaming is also optimized, offering better graphics performance with Apple Silicon, a game porting toolkit for easier development and porting, and the introduction of Game Mode for improved performance, frame rates, and reduced latency.

For professionals, Sonoma enables hybrid and remote workflows with a high-performance mode in the Screen Sharing app, allowing low-latency remote access to professional workflows with support for up to two virtual displays and reference color for remote color workflows.

Additionally, Sonoma brings various accessibility enhancements, such as connectivity with Made for iPhone hearing devices, Live Speech for typing and vocalizing thoughts, phonetic suggestions for dictation, and customization options for users with visual and cognitive disabilities.

Other notable features include improved PDF functionality, inline PDF display in Notes, Siri activation by voice command, enhanced password management with iCloud Keychain, improved Messages and Reminders apps, enhanced keyboard features, and added privacy and safety measures like Communication Safety and Sensitive Content Warning.

Developers can access the beta version of macOS Sonoma immediately, with a public beta coming next month. The final version will be available as a free download for all users in the fall.
