Chinese automaker BYD has launched the Dolphin compact electric vehicle in Malaysia. Since December 2022 when the brand debuted its passenger EV in the country, BYD has continued to expand in the market. The Dolphin is BYD’s second model in Malaysia after the launch of the Atto 3 last December. The new models are being exclusively distributed in Malaysia by Sime Darby Motors. The BYD Dolphin has been on sale in China since August 21, 2021.

The BYD Dolphin was launched on July 27, according to a statement by the brand. The Dolphin is being offered in two versions in Malaysia, compared to the three versions available in China. The BYD Dolphin has dimensions of 4,125 x 1,770 x 1,570mm while the wheelbase is 2,700m.

Currently, there are eight stores offering the BYD Atto 3 in Malaysia. BYD hopes to expand its collaboration with its partners with a focus on increasing accessibility to BYD’s products and services in China. The Atto 3 has grown tremendously in demand and BYD is now the leading EV brand in Malaysia. Since 2014 when BYD entered the Malaysian market, it had had a slow trajectory until recently. It started its development in the local market by delivering commercial vehicles and assembling its electric buses locally.

The BYD deal with Sime Darby Motors was penned in October 2022. The agreement entailed the importation of BYD passenger EVs and this was signaled by the Atto 3 in December 2022. The two BYD Dolphin EV models available in Malaysia are priced at 99,900 ringgit (~$21,932) and 124,900 ringgit (~$27,420) respectively. The three BYD Dolphin models in China were priced between the equivalent of $16,270 and $19,064 at their release.
