It’s not just texting anymore; emojis are now paving their way into navigation. Google Maps recently launched an update that lets users add emojis to their saved locations, offering a more personalized and speedy way to find their favorite spots.

It’s definitely a quirky way of finding your favorite spots in the city

Gone are the days when you had to squint at your screen, deciphering tiny pins and text. Now you can assign a pizza slice emoji for your favorite pizzeria or a basketball for your go-to gym. The process is simple: tap the Saved tab in the app, create or edit your list, and voila!—your list now gets a sprinkle of character with your chosen emoji.

But here’s the catch: this nifty feature doesn’t apply to Google Maps’ default lists like “Want to go” or “Favorites.” You’ve got to take the reins and build your list from scratch. Google‘s video demonstration shows the creation of a “Fav Coffee Spots” list, adorned with a fitting cup of coffee emoji.

So, why is Google doing this? Most likely, it’s about enhancing user interaction. Traditional map pins are functional but lack personality. Emojis, however, can express a lot more. Zoom out on Google Maps, and instead of a sea of indistinguishable pins, you’ll see emojis representing your personalized spots. It not only makes the map visually appealing but also expedites your search, cutting down time spent on tapping each location to see what it is.

This update opens up a realm of possibilities. Will we see further personalization features in navigation apps soon? Time will tell. For now, enjoy your emoji-filled journeys, making your commutes a tad more exciting and uniquely yours.
