X, formerly Twitter, might be making a drastic shift in its business model. A surprise statement from Elon Musk has hinted that the platform might shift to a paid subscription for all of its users. This could possibly be the most unpopular changes from the Tesla and SpaceX CEO so far.

Elon Musk wants to combat botting with paid subscription

During a recent live stream, Elon Musk was talking with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he mentioned that X is preparing to shift a subscription only business model for all of its users. The billionaire added that a “small monthly payment for use of the X system” can help in dealing with the “vast armies of bots” on the microblogging website.

He further added, “Because a bot costs a fraction of a penny — call it a tenth of a penny — but even if (a bot maker) has to pay a few dollars, the effective cost of bots is very high.” Unfortunately, Elon hasn’t specifically mentioned how much the monthly subscription will cost when it rolls out. Although, it would likely be different from its current Premium plan.

Musk believes that this move would require bot makers to register a new payment method for each individual bot. In other words, it would make it a lot harder for people to create fake accounts on the platform. At the moment, this is all the information that was shared regarding this major shift, so stick around for more updates.
