Last month, Apple unveiled the Watch Series 9. At the end of the same month, the Cupertino-based tech giant made the original Apple Watch obsolete. Now, the second-generation smartwatch from the company i.e. the Watch Series 1 has entered the vintage production list. It’s worth noting that vintage and obsolete labels are both different. To jog your memory, the original Watch and the Watch Series 1 debuted way back in 2015 and 2016 respectively.
Apple Watch Series 1 gets vintage tag
Apple classifies vintage products as those that have been off the market for five years but less than seven. The vintage label on the Watch Series 1 signals that it is not quite obsolete but may no longer be eligible for official support. This is because the repairs are subject to the availability of the spare parts. Once, Apple slaps the obsolete label, the Watch Series 1 won’t get any official repair at the company’s stores or authorized outlets.
The Apple Watch Series 1 debuted in 2016 alongside the Watch Series 2. It was a more affordable offering among the two smartwatches. Notably, the Watch Series 1 had the same hardware as the original model except for the faster chipset. It was priced at $369 making it a hit among the consumers.
The Apple Watch Series 1 and 2 received software updates till 2020. Both currently run on watchOS6. The Watch Series 1 bagged the title of the world’s best-selling smartwatch in 2018 accounting for 90 percent of global Apple Watch sales.
