In a recent announcement at the 2023 Snapdragon Technology Summit in Hawaii, Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon X Elite processor, aiming at the ultra-thin laptop segment. This new chipset is poised to compete with Apple’s M-series, Intel Core, and AMD Ryzen, with Qualcomm highlighting its advantages in performance and energy efficiency. At the summit, the company also announced their latest flagship mobile chip Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
Snapdragon X Elite Laptops Expected to Hit the Market in Mid-2024
The first wave of laptops powered by the Snapdragon X Elite is set to hit the market in mid-2024. Nine major PC manufacturers will integrate this chip into their products, including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Honor, Lenovo, Microsoft Surface, Samsung, and Xiaomi. Qualcomm’s supply chain for these laptops will be supported by manufacturing partners Compal, Quanta, Wistron, and Inventec, with display panels sourced from AU Optronics and BOE.
While Qualcomm showcased prototypes at the summit, detailed benchmark scores remain undisclosed. However, the chipset’s specifications are notable:
CPU: Qualcomm’s Oryon CPU with 64-bit architecture has 12 cores, clocking up to 3.8 GHz with boosts up to 4.3 GHz.
GPU: The Adreno GPU supports DX12 and delivers 4.6 TFLOPs.
Memory: It utilizes LPDDR5x with a speed of 8533 MT/s, supporting up to 64GB and 136 GB/s bandwidth across 8 channels.
Connectivity: The processor features Snapdragon X65 5G modem with speeds up to 10 Gbps, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 5.4.
Other Features: The Snapdragon X Elite supports up to UHD 120Hz displays, HDR10, AV1 encoding, 4K HDR video decoding, and Snapdragon Sound Tech Suite for lossless audio. Furthermore, it promises robust “enterprise-grade” security.
Qualcomm CEO, Cristiano Amon, mentioned its superior single-threaded performance relative to Apple’s 12-core M2 Max and Intel’s 14-core Core i7-1355U. Additionally, Qualcomm asserts that the X Elite reaches its peak performance with a 30% reduction in power consumption compared to its competitors.
