Fresh off the successful launch of their SU7 electric sedan, Xiaomi is rumored to be fast-tracking their next EV – an SUV – for a release by the end of this year. That would be a clear indicator of one thing specifically – Xiaomi wants to label itself as a serious automobile manufacturer.
Many other Chinese EV companies have popular SUVs, so Xiaomi will have competition
This news comes from a Chinese report with unnamed sources, and while an SUV isn’t a surprise (considering their dominance in the market), the year-end release target seems ambitious. Xiaomi is known for its rapid product launches in the smartphone space, but the car industry typically operates at a slower pace.
However, there’s pressure for Xiaomi to enter the booming SUV market. Many Chinese EV startups, like Nio, Li Auto, and XPeng, have focused heavily on SUVs. Perhaps Xiaomi’s sedan launch was a strategic move to differentiate itself initially, but an SUV seems like the inevitable next step.
The impressive sales figures for the SU7 sedan (over 50,000 orders in the first 27 minutes!) suggest a strong demand for Xiaomi’s EVs. An SUV, building on Xiaomi’s reputation for value-packed features, could be even more successful.
