Nubia recently revealed that it will launch a clamshell foldable smartphone next week. This device officially called Nubia Flip 5G will be unveiled on April 9 in China.
It will be the brand’s first foldable phone. But the product will not be new.
Based on the teasers and leaks, the handset is expected to be a rebranded ZTE Libero Flip. For the unaware, Nubia and Red Magic are subsidiaries of ZTE.
It is currently the most affordable foldable phone on sale at just JPY 63,000 (~$415). The device could be even cheaper in China beating the Motorola Razr 40.
This could start a new trend of budget foldables in the coming years as a couple more (Energizer Ultimate U660S and Blackview Hero 10) are already confirmed to go on sale later this year.
These handsets arrive with downgraded specs compared to those that cost above $1,000. So what kind of specs can we expect from the Nubia Flip 5G? Let’s find out.
The Nubia Flip 5G will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 mobile platform. This very same chipset is also present inside almost a year-old Motorola Razr 40.
The chip was unveiled about two years ago in May 2022. It is slower than current-gen mid-range chipsets, let alone flagship chips.
It has an octa-core Kryo CPU and Adreno 662 GPU. The CPU consists of 4 x ARM Cortex-A710 cores clocked at 2.4GHz and 4 x ARM Cortex-A510 cores run.
Anyways, a chipset alone does not define a product and this one is actually capable enough for normal day-to-day usage.
2. Small Cover Screen
The Nubia Flip 5G will sport a 6.9-inch main vertical foldable display. This centered punch hole panel will offer a resolution of 2790×1188 pixels.
The screen size as well as its resolution match those of premium clamshell foldables. We don’t have info on refresh rate but it will likely be 120Hz.
However, it will feature a small 1.43-inch circular cover screen. This tiny display can only show minimal widgets and can act as a viewfinder for the camera.
A small external display could be a dealbreaker for users who prefer using their foldable without even opening. On the other hand, it is a quality-of-life feature for someone on a digital detox.
3. Single Camera
The Nubia Flip 5G will house a dual camera setup on the rear. But only one of these sensors will be usable and that will be the primary 50MP snapper.
The secondary sensor will be merely a 2MP depth sensor. While on the front, it will sport a 16MP shooter.
Though the cameras are the same as on regular budget smartphones, the hinge can be adjusted between 60-110 degrees to click pictures and shoot videos in creative ways.
4. Decent Battery
The Nubia Flip 5G will be backed by a 4,310mAH battery. That’s respectable for a clamshell foldable which is thin at 7.3mm when unfolded.
The phone will carry support for 33W wired charging but will lack wireless charging support.
