Apple‘s plans for the future of Apple TV are taking shape, and it might involve getting a little closer. According to Mark Gurman’s latest Power On newsletter for Bloomberg, Apple is considering integrating a camera directly into the Apple TV box, potentially opening the door for FaceTime calls and other video conferencing applications.

Users can also use their iPhones or iPads as cameras for the big screen

This news comes alongside the recent addition of the FaceTime app in Apple’s tvOS 17 update. Currently, users can leverage their iPhone or iPad‘s rear cameras for video calls on the big screen. However, a built-in camera on the Apple TV itself would eliminate the need for a separate device.

Gurman hints at even more possibilities beyond video calls with the camera integration. He mentions “gesture-based interactive control,” but specifics remain under wraps. There are two potential interpretations:

  • Enhanced Video Calling: This could build upon existing gesture features in FaceTime and other video calling apps on iOS 17, macOS Sonoma, and tvOS 17. Imagine using gestures like thumbs-up for on-screen fireworks or peace signs for confetti during video calls on your Apple TV.
  • System-Wide Gestures: This would be a more ambitious approach, enabling gesture control for the entire tvOS system. While details are scarce, it could revolutionize how you interact with your Apple TV.

Apple’s smart home ambitions extend beyond the Apple TV. Gurman also mentions the company’s exploration of a “lightweight smart display,” similar to a low-end iPad. This versatile device could move from room to room, connecting to charging stations throughout the house. Apple has reportedly started limited trial production of screens for such a product, but a final decision on its launch remains unclear.
