Tesla has opted to settle a wrongful death lawsuit with the family of Apple engineer Walter Huang, avoiding a court battle over its Autopilot driver-assistance system.

The accident occurred in March 2018, and an investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) pointed to both Autopilot and driver distraction as contributing factors.
Details of the settlement, including the compensation amount, remain confidential. A judge must still approve the agreement, with a follow-up hearing scheduled for April 11th. The California Department of Transportation, also named as a defendant, will have the opportunity to object.
Previously, Tesla planned to subpoena Apple to determine if Huang was playing games on his phone at the time of the crash, suggesting he may have been inattentive. Investigators found a game app open on Huang’s phone but couldn’t confirm its active use during the accident. While Tesla sought to implicate Apple, the tech giant resisted the subpoena.
This settlement marks the end of a potential landmark case regarding Autopilot technology. However, questions about driver inattention and the specific role of Autopilot in the crash remain unanswered.
