Samsung is gearing up to introduce a new category of audio devices alongside its flagship foldables. According to popular tipster Ice Universe, the company’s MX division is preparing to unveil its first-ever bone conduction headphones, codenamed “Able,” at its Galaxy Unpacked event in July, likely sharing the stage with the highly anticipated Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7.

These Headphones Won’t Even Go in Your Ears
These Able headphones are expected to employ Open Wireless Stereo (OWS) technology, a departure from traditional earbuds. Bone conduction technology transmits sound through the skull via mechanical vibrations, leaving the ear canal open.

This method offers several advantages, particularly for runners, cyclists, and commuters who need to stay aware of their surroundings while listening to music or taking calls. Unlike conventional earbuds, bone conduction headphones reduce ear fatigue and provide an extra layer of safety, making them ideal for urban environments.
While bone conduction technology presents exciting possibilities, it also comes with inherent challenges. Potential drawbacks include some compromise in sound fidelity and the possibility of sound leakage. Furthermore, the complexities of refining this technology often translate to a higher price point.
Samsung’s foray into this niche market reflects the growing demand for open-ear audio solutions. As true wireless stereo (TWS) earphones continue to thrive, with global shipments reaching impressive figures, Samsung is strategically expanding its audio offerings to cater to a broader range of consumer needs.
The Able headphones could position Samsung as a strong contender in the bone conduction market, potentially challenging established players like Shokz. The prospect of a major tech giant like Samsung entering this space could also drive innovation and make this technology more accessible to consumers worldwide.
