1. Nintendo Switch 2: Hardware & Gaming Performance Upgrades

Even at launch, the Nintendo Switch launched with underpowered hardware. But Nintendo’s exclusive titles like The Legend of Zelda series got impressive optimization, bringing some of the best art styles in video games despite being limited in terms of hardware. But with the Nintendo Switch 2, the upgrades to the internals will help give games extra room to breathe.

Based on our previous reports, the upcoming gaming handheld will feature a new customer Nvidia Tegra chipset, which could potentially match the performance of the Xbox One or PlayStation 4. This would allow for gaming at a higher resolution, more detailed textures, and the use of more advanced lighting effects. The gameplay experience also becomes smoother and the higher RAM and storage capacity is another great boon to gamers.

2. Display and Form Factor

Another area where the Nintendo Switch 2 makes a notable improvement is the display. It is unclear if the display is being upgraded to an OLED panel but the screen size is getting bumped to 8-inch (6.2-inch on the original). The resolution is also getting upgrade from 720p to 1080p. The removable JoyCon controllers were a major selling point of the original Switch and these controllers are returning with the successor.

That’s not all, these are becoming better as well with a more intuitive sliding rail system with a magnetic connection. The announcement teaser trailer has even revealed an adjustable kickstand. We can also expect Nintendo to continue the hybrid design allowing for both docked and handheld gaming.

3. Backward Compatibility and Game Library

A crucial factor for many first gen Switch owners is backwards compatibility. Nintendo has a history of supporting its previous libraries, and it’s widely expected that the Switch 2 will continue this trend. So users can still play their Switch games via both digital and physical copies. Some of the older titles are also rumored to get some enhancements as well to take advantage of the Switch 2’s better hardware. But most importantly, the console will most likely be getting its own lineup of exclusive games.

4. Release Window and Pricing

Nintendo has yet to reveal an official launch window for the Switch 2, but it will unveil the console during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct. This event is set to take place on 2nd April 2025 at 6 PM PST. Recent leaks have suggested that the new handheld gaming console could be priced between $399 and $499 owing to upgraded hardware and other factors. So it is about $100 to $200 more expensive than the first iteration.
