After years of anticipation, Nintendo has finally unveiled a new handheld console. This is the direct successor to the original Switch and is called the Nintendo Switch 2. The company’s latest console brings various upgrades over its predecessor along with new enhanced games as well.

Nintendo Switch 2: What makes it special?

With the Switch 2, Nintendo offers an overhauled design, a larger display, and more powerful hardware. It measures just 13.9mm thick and weighs around 399 grams (with controllers attached). So the console is still a portable gaming machine. The second generation Switch sports a tall 7.9-inch LCD panel with a higher 1080p resolution along with a 120Hz refresh rate and VRR support (variable refresh rate). The bump in resolution, screen real estate, and refresh rate will offer improved visuals.

Under the hood, the Nintendo Switch 2 packs a new custom Nvidia processor that offers greater GPU and CPU performance. The exact make or model of this chip is still unclear, but the brand claims that the chip will help in improved graphical fidelity and quicker load times. This chipset is paired with 256GB of internal storage, which can be expanded by up to 2TB via a microSD Express card. A sizeable 5,220mAh battery pack powers this device.

Other notable features include WiFi 6, Bluetooth, and an Ethernet option via the dock. Like its predecessor, the redesigned JoyCon controllers are removable and you also get a kickstand built-in. When docked, Nintendo claims that the Switch 2 can offer better performance with acting cooling. During the announcement, the company revealed a fresh lineup of Nintendo games like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza along with a special Switch 2 Edition from the existing Switch library. The Nintendo Switch 2 launches on June 5 for 449.99 US Dollars. Pre-orders for the console kicks off on April 9.
