The iPad mini is finally on track to get something fans have been asking for for years. But while Apple seems ready to deliver a long-awaited visual upgrade, early leaks suggest one familiar limitation isn’t going anywhere.

New details from well-known leakers Instant Digital (via Weibo) and yeux1122 (via Naver) point to what’s shaping up as the iPad mini 8. The new model will reportedly bump its screen size slightly to 8.5 inches and switch from LCD to LTPS OLED, which means richer contrast and darker blacks.

Under the hood, Apple is said to be planning a serious spec jump. The mini could get the same A19 Pro chip used in the iPhone 17 Pro models, which would be far more power than most small-tablet owners will ever need. And for timing, the leaks suggest a launch sometime in the second half of 2026. Interestingly, the once-rumored OLED iPad Air upgrade doesn’t seem close, so the mini 8 might become Apple’s first compact OLED tablet if the schedule sticks.

But there’s a catch

The refresh rate. Even after moving to OLED, the iPad mini 8 is expected to stay locked at 60 Hz. That means scrolling and Apple Pencil input will feel just like they do now. In practical terms, the display tech will improve, but the experience won’t feel as modern as many hoped.

There’s also a quirky detail still up in the air: panel orientation. Apple is reportedly undecided on whether the OLED screen will be manufactured primarily for portrait or landscape use, which could influence camera placement.

For a device that’s always been defined by its size, the iPad mini has managed to hang onto a dedicated fanbase — people who are willing to trade a few high-end perks for portability. But with OLED finally arriving, some expected Apple to go all-in and eliminate long-standing compromises. If these leaks are accurate, 60 Hz might remain the tax mini fans pay for staying small.
