Apple has announced the iPhone Duo, its first-ever foldable iPhone, and the device could have a major influence on the next phase of the foldable market. Several brands, including Oppo, Honor and Vivo, are also expected to explore wider foldable designs as this passport-style form factor gains momentum.

The iPhone Duo features a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner screen, with both designed around a wider aspect ratio. It is powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip and features a titanium frame, while Apple has also focused heavily on reducing the visibility of the inner display crease. Starting at $1,999, the iPhone Duo will sit firmly in the ultra-premium segment when it goes on sale on October 23. Its combination of a wide foldable design, a near-crease-free inner display and Apple’s software ecosystem could make it one of the most influential foldables yet.

There are still not many wide foldables on the market, although more brands are expected to join the bandwagon next year. Here are five alternatives to the iPhone Duo, including three wide foldables and two more conventional book-style models.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 is arguably the most obvious alternative to the iPhone Duo. Samsung has given its latest Fold a wider design, with a 5.5-inch cover display and a 7.6-inch inner screen, making it closer to the passport-style approach Apple has adopted.

The Fold 8 also brings a slimmer and lighter body, a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy chipset and improved foldable display technology. Samsung has spent several generations refining its hinge and software, giving the Fold 8 a significant advantage in terms of overall foldable experience.

Unlike some of the other phones on this list, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is widely available across international markets through Samsung, carriers and retailers. It starts at $1,899.99 in the US, making it $100 cheaper than the iPhone Duo before any promotional discounts or trade-in offers.
