Apple has announced the iPhone Duo, its first-ever foldable iPhone, and the device could have a major influence on the next phase of the foldable market. Several brands, including Oppo, Honor and Vivo, are also expected to explore wider foldable designs as this passport-style form factor gains momentum.
The iPhone Duo features a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner screen, with both designed around a wider aspect ratio. It is powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip and features a titanium frame, while Apple has also focused heavily on reducing the visibility of the inner display crease.
Starting at $1,999, the iPhone Duo will sit firmly in the ultra-premium segment when it goes on sale on October 23. Its combination of a wide foldable design, a near-crease-free inner display and Apple’s software ecosystem could make it one of the most influential foldables yet.
There are still not many wide foldables on the market, although more brands are expected to join the bandwagon next year. Here are five alternatives to the iPhone Duo, including three wide foldables and two more conventional book-style models.
2Huawei Pura X Max
The Huawei Pura X Max is one of the closest Android alternatives to the iPhone Duo’s wide design. It is the second-generation wide foldable from Huawei following the original Pura X, bringing a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.7-inch inner screen in a distinctive passport-style body.
The phone is powered by Huawei’s Kirin 9030 Pro chipset and runs HarmonyOS 6.1. It also features a triple rear camera setup, a large foldable OLED display and Huawei’s latest hinge technology, making it one of the more interesting examples of where the wide-foldable format can go.
Huawei has not released the Pura X Max as a conventional global model, but international buyers can still purchase the Chinese edition through third-party stores such as Giztop. Buyers should keep in mind that it uses Huawei Mobile Services rather than Google Mobile Services and does not include the Google Play Store.
