Apple has announced the iPhone Duo, its first-ever foldable iPhone, and the device could have a major influence on the next phase of the foldable market. Several brands, including Oppo, Honor and Vivo, are also expected to explore wider foldable designs as this passport-style form factor gains momentum.
The iPhone Duo features a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner screen, with both designed around a wider aspect ratio. It is powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip and features a titanium frame, while Apple has also focused heavily on reducing the visibility of the inner display crease. Starting at $1,999, the iPhone Duo will sit firmly in the ultra-premium segment when it goes on sale on October 23. Its combination of a wide foldable design, a near-crease-free inner display and Apple’s software ecosystem could make it one of the most influential foldables yet.
There are still not many wide foldables on the market, although more brands are expected to join the bandwagon next year. Here are five alternatives to the iPhone Duo, including three wide foldables and two more conventional book-style models.
3Xiaomi 18 Fold
The Xiaomi 18 Fold is another wide foldable that makes the iPhone Duo look less unusual than it might have initially seemed. It has a 5.38-inch external display and a 7.58-inch inner screen, giving it a compact shape when folded while providing a considerably larger canvas when opened.
Xiaomi has also packed the phone with flagship hardware, including its XRing O3 chipset, up to 16GB of RAM and a 6,000mAh battery with 67W wired and 50W wireless charging. Its camera system includes a 200-megapixel main sensor and Leica-tuned imaging capabilities, making the hardware package particularly competitive.
The Xiaomi 18 Fold is unlikely to launch officially outside China, but that does not completely rule it out for international buyers. The Chinese edition can already be purchased through third-party retailers such as Giztop, which offers global shipping, although buyers should be aware that the device is still a China-market model.
