TECNO POVA 4 PRO

POVA is one of the most important lineups for Tecno to win over users who are ignored by most well-known brands. Even in the design, The POVA models are also more attentive than most brands’ budget phones. No exception for the latest POVA 4 Pro. As a budget phone, even though it doesn’t come with a high-performance chipset, it’s still special enough in its price range.

Design

The first thing that impressed me is the phone’s design. Especially the back cover has a geometric aesthetic, far smarter than some combination of rectangular and round arrangements. It makes the camera module less obtrusive and more compatible with the rest of the back cover. What’s even more interesting is that the camera module doesn’t bump up too much.

On the other hand, like most budget models, both the phone’s frame and back cover are made of plastic. But the built quality doesn’t feel cheap at all. Oddly enough, the plastic frame feels much like metal.

The POVA 4 Pro isn’t exactly thin and lightweight. But considering the 6000mAh huge battery, this seems like a fair deal. Yes, you heard it right, the POVA 4 Pro is equipped with a long-last 6000mAh battery. So, if you need a regular phone with long battery life, it’s definitely one of the best choices. After a full day of heavy testing work, the remaining-power figure seemed to mock us: is that all there is?

Display

The 6.6-inch 90Hz Oled 1080P notch display is the most attractive upgrade over the standard POVA 4. If you choose the standard version, all you can have for eyes is a 720P LCD panel. But on the Pro variant, you can have a much better color contrast with a higher resolution. Meanwhile, you can also turn the AOD feature on for standby mode. On this phone, the 90Hz is also an appropriate refresh rate to match the software with smooth animation.

Software

And the system of the POVA 4 Pro also offers a good response without obvious laggy issues. But it still might let me wait one or two seconds to get responses or get slightly stuck if I kept too many apps on standby in the background. In this case, the phone provides a shortcut on the home page. With one click, the phone can clean up the background and free up memory to restore system smoothness. The operating system running on the phone is HiOS, which is based on Android 12. It’s one of the most friendly OS for budget models that we’ve ever experienced. But meanwhile, almost all the features updated in Android 12 are ready on the POVA 4 Pro.

Another convenient feature for the camera is that Google Lens has been integrated into the camera app, which can be easily activated by clicking the shortcut at the corner of the camera UI.

Audio

A surprise is that the POVA 4 Pro comes with dual speaker units for playing stereo sounds. This is indeed out of our expectations. So here just judge for yourself how they sound. 

There’s a 3.5mm headphone jack at the bottom, where you can also plug the headphone in and turn it into an FM radio antenna. Inside the phone box, the accessories also include a pair of wired headphones for users.

And on the left side, the Sim-card tray also gives us some surprises. Pull it out and you will see the waterproof rubber ring, which is good. And it can load dual sim cards and gives another TF slot on the other side for storage expansion, which is indeed the most generous I have ever seen.

Cameras

As for the camera, the POVA 4 Pro is equipped with an 8MP selfie camera and dual rear cameras. For the front one, Tecno also brought the flash that we saw on the Spark series. You can make it a flash for taking selfies or keep it on to fill in the light for video shooting. While for the rear cameras, the main camera features a surprising 50MP sensor but we have no idea what the second cam is used for. This is clearly a risky solution. It removes other secondary lenses but focuses on giving the primary lens the best experience possible. I did enjoy shooting photos on the POVA 4 Pro since the 50MP sensor did produce good images for us. The absence of a wide-angle lens indeed made us a bit uncomfortable at first, especially when taking landscape photos. But the fact is that most wide-angle lenses don’t take high-quality pictures. Not to mention that this is a reasonably priced phone. So it’s still a fair deal.

And thanks to the 50MP high resolution, the phone can shoot pretty good digital zooming photos, especially in the range from 1 to 3x. Also due to the nice algorithm tuning, the photos shot on the phone still have decent colors and good sharpness.

One more thing, the beauty effect of both the front and rear cameras is so amazing. It has a variety of beauty filters, not only for females but also for you guys. Even though I adopted a man filter, it still made me really feel shy after seeing the photos.

As for video shooting, both the front and rear lenses can shoot videos at up to 2k 30fps. This is indeed a bit of a waste of this 50MP sensor.

Performance & Gaming

As we mentioned, the Helio G99 is not exactly a high-performance chipset. But on phones like the POVA 4 Pro, such a configuration is still very reasonable. Meanwhile, the phone also generously comes with 8GB Ram plus 256GB Rom. This makes it capable of running most games smoothly under relatively low graphics.

For connectivity, in addition to Bluetooth and WIFI 5, the phone also supports NFC features.

The POVA 4 Pro’s battery life is really impressive. It’s pretty easy for the 6000mAh capacity to stand by for more than 2 days after we completed our battery life test. And then the 45W fast charger can collect all the power back in just about 1 hour, which is also not bad.

So that’s all we want to share about the Tecno POVA 4 Pro. We didn’t really expect a lot from this phone until we got it. And now we really appreciate the trade-offs that Tecno made with this phone. Tecno is still good at making budget phones. Unlike some brands, we can see from the POVA 4 Pro that the brand are serious.

Motorola Moto X30 Pro / Motorola Edge 30 Ultra 

At the end of last year, Motorola released the edge X30, the world’s first SnapDragon 8 Gen1 platform smartphone. It is one of the cheapest models powered by the flagship chipset. Even compared to Xiaomi 12 series, it’s still very competitive in pricing. Not satisfied yet? The more powerful Moto X30 Pro/Edge 30 Ultra just comes. Motorola didn’t continue the tradition of debuting the latest flagship chip, Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. A month after their rivals launched their flagship phones with the 8+ Gen 1, Motorola finally brought us the new Moto X30 Pro, which just got released as the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra in Europe.

Unboxing & Design

To be honest, when I saw this X30 Pro for the first time, I couldn’t believe that it came from Motorola. This pure white back cover with a matt finish looks like a piece of ice cream. There is no extra detail on it, and I really like this minimalist design, moto even did some special texture processing with the logo, so that it’s just visually hidden on the back cover from multi-angles. You might only be able to see the logo at certain angles and in certain light.

So at first glance, I got immediately impressed by the whole-white back design. I even imagined that it could be hard to find the phone if the camera module just happens to be covered in snow.

Compared to other flagship phones, the moto X30 Pro has a more compact and refined camera module, which reminds me of some of Vivo’s flagship phones last few years, such as the Vivo X60 series. It’s nice to see this kind of artistic design back with us, although it’s not exactly a novel design.

Along with the refined camera module, this time the Motorola X30 Pro more focuses on phone photography. And we will talk about it later.

The X30 Pro has very good control over the body thickness, as well as the weight. It weighs less than 200 grams. But if you just look at these numbers, you may think it will be comfortable to hold in your hand, but unfortunately, although it has an edge-curved screen and back cover, the connecting frame is too narrow, a bit sharp, and protrudes a lot from the back cover, so it would be like holding the back of a knife, which is kind of uncomfortable.

Display & Speakers

The X30 Pro comes with a 6.7-inch OLED screen. Motorola still hasn’t brought a 2K resolution to their flagship phone, but this screen still looks great with rich detail. It has 10bit colors and supports up to 144Hz refresh rate, which offers smoother touching in a more power-efficient way for daily use. And it also has good brightness, there’s no problem if you want to use it in the sunlight.

In terms of audio experience, the X30 Pro has dual speakers with Dolby Atmos support to provide stereo sound while you watch films or play music.

Cameras

The camera performance is probably one of the biggest selling points of the X30 Pro. For the last two years, moto is a big fan of high-pixel sensors. Probably for the brand, 100MP is way behind the times, so this time they brought the world’s highest pixel mobile sensor to the X30 Pro, it has an insane 200MP resolution, four times more than the iPhone 14 Pro’s main camera. So, how much detail can it really capture?

In fact, by observing a large number of samples, we found that although we could get clearer details after turning on Ultra-High-Resolution mode, the gap was not as large as expected, and meanwhile, it brought two problems.

The first problem is the shutter delay, obviously, Ultra High-Resolution mode is only good for shooting still subjects or landscapes, as it takes two seconds to complete the shot. And the other trouble is the huge photo size that occupies, so I really don’t recommend you buy the standard version with 128GB ROM. Or just forget about the high-resolution mode.

But it still brings some additional benefits, such as the 4-in-1 pixel binning in daily shooting on the main camera. And under the auto mode, the shutter response is very fast and you can still get good detail with the pixel binning. So rather than touting an output of the 200MP, it should be advertised as being able to simulate the rich color detail that comes with pixel binning. So I think the biggest use of the figure, 200MP, is still in marketing.

Performance

Not surprisingly, the X30 Pro powered by the SnapDragon 8+ Gen1 platform has a decent performance output. In Benchmarks, it has a similar performance to other Android flagship phones, but don’t forget that it has a very compact body design. So I was concerned from the start about its stability under high-performance loads. As expected, the 3DMark Wide Life Extreme test showed us that it’s really not stable, along with heating issues. So if you like to play those heavy games like Genshing Impact, this phone is not a great option for you!

MYUI & software features

Since Oneplus returned to the arms of Color OS, it’s really hard to find a brand that offers a similar experience to Google Pixel, but MYUI on this X30 Pro gave me an unexpected surprise by offering a very simple and non-intrusive experience.

All your operations are responded to quickly and smoothly. In addition, Motorola also offers a lot of customization options for the pages, you can change the font, home screen layout, and even the icon shape. Or feel tired of the preset app icons, don’t you? No problem, there are many third-party icon packs for you to choose from.

Another system feature I’d like to show you is gesture shortcuts, you can twist your wrist twice to quickly open the camera, touch and hold the screen with 3 fingertips to capture a screenshot or double tap the power button to start screen recording. All of these features are very commonly used and it could be easy for most users to get used to.

Charging

The X30 Pro supports 125 watts of fast charging, which allows it to be fully charged in just 20 minutes. And thankfully, we have wireless charging on this phone. It supports up to 50 watts of wireless charging and even 10 watts of reverse charging. This certainly puts some of the more expensive phones to shame. You guys can leave those models that come to mind in the comments.

Conclusion

Well, that’s all about the unboxing and quick review of the Motorola X30 Pro, as known as the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra. As far as we can tell, there is little difference between the international version and the Chinese version, even though the software is very close. If you choose the Chinese version, please make sure you know how to install google services yourself, or you can ask your retailer to do it for you.

Back with the phone in my hand, I have to say this time they did a good job of showing us what less is more means. A back cover with no special textures and no shiny colors is already enough to win over many users, and I even think this look is one of the best in 2022.

In terms of photography, I can see the improvement here and the fact that Motorola trying their best. But can someone here tell them that the Sony sensor is always the safer choice, and please stop bringing ultra-high pixels to the phone camera. It really doesn’t make any sense. And it doesn’t hide the fact that your software is not yet well optimized either.

Xiaomi Glasses Camera

A fortnight ago, Xiaomi quietly launched a crowdfunding campaign for their first smart glasses product, the Mijia Glasses Camera. As you can see, it’s neither called the Xiaomi Glasses Camera nor the Xiaomi Smart glasses. So it’s clear that the Mijia Glasses Camera is more like a product developed by Xiaomi eco-chain manufacturers, which doesn’t focus on smartness or features like other smart glasses.

The title has already told us that it focuses on one thing — camera shooting. We were pretty curious whether it’s as useless as the other smart glasses on the market today, so we ordered one on the Mijia platform in the first instance, and experienced it for a few days.

Unboxing

Before we get started, I’d like to show you what’s inside the big package of the Mijia Camera Glasses. Flip the cover and the glasses appear. Well, it’s not small in size with a pretty decent build. The legs cannot be folded down and the whole frame looks very much like a stiff headband. But actually, the frame is still flexible enough to be worn by users with different head sizes. There’s the user manual and a glasses-cleaning cloth, which feels good.

And here’s a box for storing the glasses, which is quite a big one. Open it up and the other accessories are found inside, including a charging cable, a USB-A to C port adaptor, and a hanging frame with regular lenses for the nearsighted. You will need to fit your own lenses, if necessary. Since the camera glasses without the lens frame is not so light, I still recommend contacts instead of heavy lenses for those people.

Glasses Design

Coming back to the glasses. The most attractive part of this Google-glasses style device is the camera module on the side, including a 50MP wide-angle camera and another 5x optical periscope lens, which supports up to 15x hybrid zoom for long shots. So with these glasses, you are going to have a hybrid zoom range from 1x to 15x, which is a very unique feature for a glasses product.

On the other side, there’s a Sony Micro OLED display with up to 3000nits of peak brightness. Basically, it works as a viewfinder when the wearer is taking photos or recording videos. Apart from it, there’re not much it can do at the moment. The promotional posters claim it has more AR smart features, but in fact, at this moment there’s only a real-time translator supported here but no other AR features.

Experience: Wearing & Use

It’s ridiculous that Xiaomi brought AR user guidance to the glasses. It’s the most useless feature on the device. This feature was clearly not designed from a user’s point of view, but only to show that it can be AR-enabled, and unfortunately, the guidance feels terrible. After all, no one will learn how to wear and use the glasses through the tiny display.

And to be honest, I can’t wear it for more than 30 minutes, since you can obviously feel the weight and the wearing experience is not really comfortable. And once you put them on, unavoidably, your view is noticeably blocked partially by this prismatic display component, which can be frustrating for those who want to wear it for a long time. It’s also something you have to compromise on if you’re going to use the camera. But the good thing is that it exists as a viewfinder rather than being completely useless, and this discomfort becomes acceptable while shooting.

Camera Performance

Now let’s check out the performance of the cameras. You can slide back and forth on the leg to zoom from 1x to 15x, but when you start shooting, the activated lens cannot be switched, which means you can only zoom from 1 to 5x or above 5x.

No matter the photos or the videos shot on the glasses, they look much better than what I expected. It looks better with good detail and colors than the previous smart glasses products. But that doesn’t mean it has matched the image quality of some action cameras. The image shot on the glass looks no different from what we see on a regular phone camera. And it can only shoot 1080p-resolution video.

Meanwhile, it’s not a good experience to shoot on glasses. The shutter is actuated by a single touch on the leg surface, which easily leads to a mis-touch when you accidentally touch the leg. And sometimes we found the videos shot on the glasses might not be so smooth, with a slight lag.

There’s also the issue of its shutter delay. Its focus speed is a bit disappointing, which leads to the fact that sometimes when you press the shutter, it takes time to adjust the focus to finish the shot. And then it would produce an incorrect photo when you think it has finished shooting and move your head away.

The 5X lens works well with OIS, which has pretty decent detail. But it’s still not easy to have precise control of the camera direction using your head.

Software & experience

The software of the glasses is much simpler than I expected and by far it only supports the Chinese language. So does the companion app. And I couldn’t really understand why the simplest app’s installation apk file needs to be so large. Apart from pairing the phone, and setting up the WiFi connection, there are a few other simple settings like activating EIS for the wide-angle camera and boosting noise reduction with the built-in dual microphone for video filming.

But a good experience here is that you can easily transfer the photos and videos shot on the glasses to the phone storage, which is what most camera manufacturers fail to do. And you don’t have to worry about the camera storage. The built-in 32GB storage is quite enough for daily use.

For the glasses, there’s no home screen to display notifications or other information like a smartphone. Instead, for function selection, you only got 4 icons for options, including a Camera, a flashback feature, an AR user guide, and an AI translator.

I like the idea of the flashback feature, where you can collect back the videos from the ten seconds before you start shooting. It’s perfect for when you suddenly find an interesting fleeting moment but don’t have time to press the shutter to film it. You still have ten seconds to save the moment.

There’s no built-in speaker and no music playback supported. Apart from the tiny display, the only way to be alerted to information is by vibration.

Battery life & heating

Another problem is that it has an extremely limited battery life, which actually is shorter than what Xiaomi claims. The full battery only can support around 70-minutes of shooting time and stand by for around 2 hours. Also, as the chip and motherboard are inside the non-operating legs, it’s pretty easy to get heated up. But if you don’t deliberately touch it, actually you wouldn’t feel the heat.

Conclusion & suggestion 

So if you don’t have specific camera needs but just want to try out the glasses, please do not buy them as we did. Because you would lose interest in it after a single afternoon and be afraid of using it for the next few days. If you need a POV camera for professional filming, it’s not for your either, as you cannot adjust any of the camera parameters except that you can choose between 4:3 and 16:9 picture ratios.

And if you want a camera that can record life through your eyes all the time and also free up your hands, I just want to remind you of a few things about the camera glasses. First, its actual battery life for shooting is only about 1 hour; then wearing and using it for over 30mins might make you feel tired; and, last but not the least, it officially sells for 370 US dollars.

LENOVO LEGION Y700 Gaming tablet

It’s been a while since we reviewed a high-performance Android tablet. Actually, we were pretty surprised by last year’s flagship tablets, all thanks to their refreshed software, upgraded performance powered by snapdragon 870 chip, and a decent display. The one that impressed me most was the Lenovo Tab P11 Pro, also called the Xiaoxin Pad Pro 2021, with a competitive price but still featuring a 90Hz OLED display.

It’s actually happy to see that the brand didn’t stop there and recently released the Legion Y700 gaming tablet. Before I start with this review, let me just say this — It’s the best device with complete tablet features for mobile gaming.

Display

The gaming-oriented Legion lineup is popular in the gaming market. The Y700 is the series’ first tablet that focuses on the gaming experience. At first glance, the Y700 is as compact as an Android tablet. And it’s probably the first Android tablet coming with an 8.8-inch display, which is very close to the latest iPad Mini. However, even with the more compact body, the Y700 doesn’t really downgrade the display configurations.

It’s a 2K-level LCD panel featuring a 120Hz refresh rate and supports Dolby Vision and HDR contents with a maximum brightness of 500nits. Thanks to the 8.8-inch body size, the Y700’s display accuracy is much closer to a mobile phone. In actual use, it offers a decent visual experience, especially in reading or web viewing.

For the color mode, either you can apply the vibrant mode to cover wide P3 Gamut, or just choose the Standard mode for sRGB gamut with better color accuracy. Although the display supports Dolby Vision and HDR content, as an LCD panel, unfortunately, it only features a 1000:1 color contrast. So if you are thinking about having a tablet for watching a lot of videos, I still recommend you to go for the Xiaoxin Pad Pro 2021. The OLED display is still better at presenting deeper and more natural contrast.

Design

But don’t make the decision yet, because we haven’t even talked about what the Y700 tablet is really good at. As you can see, the 8.8-inch size makes the tablet look like a big smartphone. So you can hold it firmly with a single hand, which offers a big difference in user experience from those bigger tablets.

And compared to those 10 or 11-inch models, it’s so portable that you won’t always think about carrying a large backpack for it. And more importantly, the Y700 weighs only 375g, which allows you to grip it for a long time without feeling tired.

Well, the Y700 doesn’t use a one-piece-metal design for its body. Instead, the Y700’s back cover is replaced with a matte-finish glass panel. It still looks good, but also brings a concern: how are the tablet’s cooling efficiency and performance strategies? We will show you the answer in the gaming test part.

Apart from the decent display, the Y700 tablet also comes with dual JBL speakers and brings a pretty impressive stereo sound, especially when playing Dolby Atmos audio. In FPS games like PUBG Mobile requiring strong stereo sounds, it’s even good enough to play the game without using earphones.

Software & Hardware for gaming

To improve the gaming experience on the Y700, Legion borrows the gaming-related software from their gaming phones, and obviously, the software has got optimized well for the tablet. For example, now we can have the Legion Realm app to access all the gaming settings. And during gaming, you can pull down the game assistant from the top of the display and check the phone’s running state and the customized shortcuts.

And you can switch the performance mode from balanced mode to power-saving or performance mode depending on your needs.

But over the hardware, the Y700 doesn’t carry most of the Legion phones’ features, neither the shoulder buttons nor the built-in cooling fans. But the Y700 still gets the upgraded cooling solution and dual X-axis linear vibration motors. The strong haptic feedback does feel good when typing, but unfortunately, there are limited applications for the powerful motors so far. Although the Legion developed a feature called Semi-real vibration for an immersive gaming experience, we only saw three games in the supported list.

And there’s still good news left for the Y700 — it comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack and MicroSD card expansion. It surprisingly supports up to 1TB expanded storage. The full-featured USB Type-C port not only supports up to 45W fast charge but also supports seamless projection as a video-out port.

The Legion Y700 tablet is powered by the widely acclaimed Snapdragon 870 chipset. In addition to the 8+128GB model in my hand, there’s another higher configuration variant of 12+256GB storage.

Performance: durability & stability

About its performance, we are mainly concerned about its durability and stability of high-performance outputs. As you can see, in the three benchmarks, the peak performance we accessed is pretty close to what we have on other Snapdragon 870 models. Then we brought it to the Wildlife extreme stress test in 3DMark. The Y700 achieved 99.4% stability during the 20-round test. And the surface temperature remained under 43℃, which makes us look forward to its gaming stability even more.

In PUBG Mobile, it’s extremely smooth. The performance result is also at the best level that you can have in the game. After playing for a couple of hours, I can say that the Y700 tablet is the best device for gaming. It achieved a balance between the bigger display and the acceptable holding for me. I would be happy to have the Xiaoxin Pad Pro 2021 to watch movies or videos, but to hold it for long-time gaming, it’s just difficult to tolerate the discomfort caused by the weight and size.

In another game Genshin Impact, the Y700 tablet also achieved one of the best results among all the Android models. It’s able to run stably at around 58 to 60fps with minor fluctuation, and the frame rate remained at 59.1 fps. During the 30-min test, no performance throttle occurred on the Y700 tablet and the surface temperature was still kept under 43.8℃. And note that Genshin Impact is one of the heaviest games on the Android platform, which means that the Y700 is very likely to handle most games well at this point, and can continuously run at high performance without serious heating issues.

Even so, we’re still not satisfied. We haven’t yet been exposed to its performance ceiling. So we started another test which is to run the game Nimian Legends under 2K resolution. In this test, the Snapdragon 870 has done the best it could, and eventually, the framerate remained at around 36fps. What surprised us is that its performance wasn’t affected by the temperature control throughout the test. There’s no obvious performance throttling either, although the surface temperature went up to 47℃ at one point.

Battery & charging

In terms of battery and charging, the Y700 is equipped with a 6550mAh battery that supports up to 45W fast charging, and it’s compatible with PD3.0 as well as QC4.0. And I have to show you the included 50W charger. It offers dual charging ports. The Type-C port could offer up to 50W charging efficiency, while the second one offers up to 20W, which makes it compatible with different devices. We all know that manufacturers are rarely this generous.

Coming back to the charging test. The tablet was charged to 40% in 15 minutes and 80% in 30 minutes, taking around 57 minutes to be fully charged. It’s still pretty fast for a tablet.

In addition, the Y700 also supports battery protection mode, where it would supply power directly to the tablet and no longer to the battery, which has the advantage of protecting the battery and reducing the overall heat of the tablet as well.

Verdict

Overall, the Legion Y700 is an excellent gaming tablet that offers a bigger display than a smartphone while having a much better-sustained performance output with a great cooling effect. More importantly, it offers a perfect size for mobile gaming.

In addition, the tablet also brings most software features that we’ve seen on other Lenovo tablets, such as split-screen mode, floating window, and even the PC mode. About these tablet features, you can check out our review video about the Xiaoxin Pad series.

So that’s all I want to say about the Y700 tablet. And the conclusion is still the same. It’s the best device for mobile gaming at this point.

If you play a lot of games on your phone but were never really satisfied, the Y700 could be the best alternative. With such competitive pricing, it won’t let you down.

ARZOPA A1 Gamut Slim

Since working from home has become common for so many people, many new products have emerged that have tried to make your work-life easier at home. So today we bring you guys the latest portable monitor from the brand Arzopa, the Arzopa A1 Gamut Slim.

Display

The A1 Gamut series has been pretty popular in recent years, including its 15.6-inch versions and 13-inch mini variants. Apart from a Full-HD standard resolution, the 13-inch Mini version even offers 2K resolution as an option. But personally, I think the Slim Version has better value for money. And it could be a great option for those who are planning to have a second or even a third monitor, whether it’s for your laptop, smartphone, or game consoles like a switch.

The A1 Gamut Slim features a 14-inch Full-HD IPS screen with a 60Hz refresh rate. The slim version gets a slightly upgraded contrast ratio from 1000:1 to 1200:1. The IPS panel supports a wide 178°-viewing angle, which visually gives a pretty decent color contrast under 72% NTSC color gamut. Apart from the NTSC gamut, the monitor also offers sRGB, DCI-P3, Adobe, and the native gamut in OSD Menu for options.

The brightness can reach up to 320cd/㎡, which is slightly better than most portable monitors that we used before. At the same time, HDR mode is available in the OSD menu. During our experience, we could obviously see the difference in the HDR output, but the actual effect isn’t as good as what we saw on many smartphones’ OLED displays.

In actual use, it could deliver pretty good detail and colors under different visual modes. The blur and ghosting issues were not as serious as we thought. Most of the time, it could provide a fast response without lags or perceivable latency.

Accessories in the box

Now let’s check out what’s in the product box and what the slim monitor provides for connectivity. The first item we found was the user manual in different languages, which looks pretty detailed for those who are using it for the first time.

Well, it’s good to see all the three cables are made available for different connectivity options, including a Type-C to Type-C cable for full-feature use, a Type-C to Type-A cable basically used for supplying power, and another Mini HDMI to HDMI cable for video signal input. In addition to the power cable, there’s a piece of cleaning cloth and a common power brick included inside the accessories kit.

Connectivity

And now let’s look at the portable monitor. Just as it claims, the monitor is slim and lightweight, even with the attached protective cover. On the left side, there’s a power button, 3.5mm audio output, and another scrolling button for OSD operation. On the other side, it offers a Mini HDMI Port, a full-featured USB Type-C Port for receiving audio, video signals, and power connection, and another Type-C port only for power supply. At the same time, just note that the monitor doesn’t have a built-in battery, which means a wired power supply is necessary.

So let’s find out how it works. First, if you are going to use it as a monitor for a device with a full-functioned Type-C port, all you need to do is connect the monitor directly with the included Type-C cable. While transferring audio and video signals, it can also output the power supplied from the device. Such a full-functioned Type-C port now is available on most new Laptops, so just make sure that your laptop supports the most convenient connectivity.

Or if you were going to project the content from your phone or a Switch console, a single-cable connection would still work. But at the same time, the monitor might quickly drain your phone’s power. Note that, different devices support different power output solutions, and some of them may be too low to consistently power the monitor.

So in this case, it’s better to connect the monitor with the included power kit. When connected to the external power, we found that the monitor surprisingly reverse-charged the phone during projection. When connected to a Switch console, it could also supply power to both the monitor and the console.

For those devices without a Type-C port for video output, such as TV boxes, PC,s or older game consoles, the A1 Gamut monitor offers another connectivity with the Mini HDMI port. But in this case, the external power supply is necessary through the type-C power port.

Verdict

So in short, it comes with wide support for different devices like phones, Laptops, PCs, or even game consoles like Switch and PS4. More specifically, it could be a second portable screen for gaming; or just a duplicate screen for entertainment or even learning from your mobile devices; or it could also be an extended screen for your PC or laptop and help make your work from home experience more efficient.

Redmi K30 Pro vs Mi 10

Redmi released the K30 Pro model earlier this year. Since the K30 model released in January, it’s been over 2 months for us to imagine how the K30 Pro would kill those flagships as the K20 Pro did. And right now, the Redmi k30 Pro is just in our hands. Along with that, we’ve also got the Mi 10, which puts in the perfect position to see if Redmi’s flagship and Xiaomi’s flagship competes with each other.

Design

Its good to see that the K30 Pro used the complete full-screen design without any hole-punch or notch. In 2020, you will see almost all the flagships would turn to different kinds of hole-punch displays. For those who cannot accept the imperfection, the K30 Pro has given you the perfect solution.

The pop-up front camera is still one of the most effective setups for solving the dilemma between higher screen-to-body ratio and front camera components. Most phone producers have abandoned the pop-up mechanism, which probably is more about suppliers’ choices on balancing cost and user sensibility. But smartphone designers are still working on or, at least, waiting for the next solution, which is likely to be the in-screen camera. Comingback to the pop-up cameras, some users may worry about the thickness problem caused by the pop-up camera but in fact, the Redmi K30 Pro is not much thicker than the Mi 10.

Here’s how it pops-up from the top. Redmi has inherited its shiny pop-up motion, which is really not an elegant design but makes it more like a fancy toy.

And another detail different from the Mi10 is the flat display. Although a curved display is really able to catch eyes at first glance, we found that users usually got annoyed by the edge-mistouch problem. So, we appreciate that Redmi did not follow the trend for curved screen displays. Looking back to the rear camera arrangement, it reminded us of the Huawei Mate 30 Pro, though the design of K30 Pro looks much simpler.

At the same time, the K30 Pro reserved a 3.5mm Audio port, which has been taken away on most flagships including the Mi 10. But the Mi 10 has dual speakers which are able to have stereo when holding the phone in hands, while the K30 Pro, though having a certification of Hi-Res Audio, struggle to provide the same enjoyment with only one speaker.

Display

One of the biggest differences in user experience is their display. Mi 10’s display features a 90Hz refresh rate, while the K30 Pro equipped a 60Hz one. I have to say one of the most intuitive feelings about using a phone is the visual experience on their displays. Thanks to the high refresh-rate, Mi 10 seems to be a bit more fluent in the system layout, though their inside CPU performance should be very close to each other.

But other than that, the Redmi K30 Pro is definitely an excellent 1080P HDR display and had a similar color presentation to the Mi 10.

Performance

About their performance, they both are equipped with a Snapdragon 865 SOC and LPDDR5 memory, which is the best combination for performance you can have in a 2020 Android Phone. But pay attention here not to get the wrong option, because the 6GB RAM and 128 ROM version of the K30 Pro features the LPDD4X memory. In addition, the K30 Pro is equipped with the UFS3.1 storage, while the Mi 10 features the UFS3.0 storage which was considered as one of the pros in Mi 10’s advertisement.

In our test, the UFS3.1 did have around 10% speed improvement of file transmission. And more importantly, the K30 Pro is a cheaper model.

In Geekbench 5 test, the K30 Pro performed a bit better than the Mi 10 in both single-core and multi-core tests. And then we moved to the Andro-bench, the Redmi K30 Pro was not just leading the race of sequence read and write speed affected by the storage capacity but also had better results of random read and write. And the Andro-bench storage test also proved that there was over 10% improvement of the sequence read and write speed with the UFS3.1 storage.

Gaming

But when we moved to gaming tests, the K30 Pro’s gaming performance was obviously limited by the 60Hz display. In PUBG Mobile, even though we applied the highest graphic settings, the K30 Pro stably maintained 60 fps through the whole test. And the Mi 10 amazingly reached at 83.6fps averagely under the same picture quality. And looking back at the PUBG Mobile on the K30 Pro, it’s a performance waste!

And then we did a stress test in Namian Legend. this time the results were able to reflect their actual CPU performance. Although Mi10’s frame rate peaked at 90 frames, it averaged at 47.5, while the average frame rate of K30 Pro is 49.5fps. And that also met the results shown in those benchmark apps.

Cameras

Redmi was known as a sub-brand pursuing cost-effectiveness. Cameras on Redmi generally were not able to challenge those outstanding camera phones. And unfortunately, Mi 10 series were just one of them. We shot photos on both of them and let’s see what we got.

From the samples we found that Mi 10 was able to produce vivid colors with a bit higher saturation, but we also admire the K30 Pro’s 64MP primary camera due to its ability to portray the true colors. And if we were thinking to have more editing possibilities, the 108MP cameras of the Mi 10 would reserve more detail and better color tolerance.

When things come down to the high-resolution mode, obviously we see the gap between these two phones. 64MP resolution is definitely one of the most popular high-resolution solutions, but if there could be a better option like this 108MP sensor, all we have to concern is just the software tuning. But to be honest, the improvement from 64 to 108MP probably is hard to notice for most users in daily use. Because it’s not easy to perceive the difference in the details when the resolutions get so high.

And we tried several wide-angle photos but found that they may feature the same wide-angle lens and sensors. The samples looked very close with good resolution and good anti-distortion.

They both feature a macro camera. But from their samples, we thought they were still at a ‘have fun’ level. Xiaomi has developed its own powerful night mode just like its rivals have developed a few software solutions on improving and balancing the brightness. These two models both could shoot night photos under extremely low light conditions. The night mode samples significantly reduced noise in the darkness. The Mi 10’s advantage of high resolution still worked in night mode, which was impressive during our whole camera review.

Charge

Another feature worth talking about is the charging efficiency. An included 33W charger gave the K30 Pro a full-charge just in around 63 minutes, while the 50W charger did it in just 47 minutes. Both of them were impressive. Especially for the Mi 10, it features the 30W wireless charging, which is even faster than on some flagship models’ wired charging. However, there’s no wireless charging on the K30 pro.

Conclusion

From a market perspective, the Redmi K series has inherited the former role of the Mi series, which were popular as cost-effective flagship killers. But as we’ve observed, it is getting more difficult than ever to play the role of an all-round candidate and save cost at the same time. The Redmi K30 Pro, to some extent, has matched its market positioning, and it’s still one of the high-end models to get your money’s worth. For most users the K30 Pro is a better buy starting at 2999 yuan ($426) despite its 60Hz display. It has a capable camera setup with a good design and powerful hardware to satisfy the requirements of most upper mid-range users.

The near $100 difference between the Redmi K30 Pro (8GB) and Mi 10 could be significant enough for most buyers to lean towards the former.

Mi Watch: a new beginning

Xiaomi eventually released its first watch product, the Xiaomi Mi Watch. Thanks to the Mi Band series, Xiaomi has dominated the market share of smart wearables. But the Mi Band is more targeting at the budget market. Though it has a great shipping volume of the whole market, it’s not able to help Xiaomi build up a good reputation in the market and cover different market segments. As Xiaomi calls, the market positioning of the Mi Watch is a ‘small phone on your wrist’. So Mi Watch probably is considered as a new beginning to practice Xiaomi’s ambition in Xiaomi ecological chain.

Let’s start with the design. Well, it’s not new to us. And I think it’s hard for Xiaomi to deny the design imitation here. Xiaomi has suffered quite a dispute with plagiarism. We love to see Xiaomi bringing us good products at affordable prices, but at the same time, we also hope that Xiaomi should pay more attention to develop their own design language. However, I still want to remind you, the Mi Watch is less than half the price of its Apple counterpart.

Design

The watch in my hand is a premium version. Compared to the standard version, the main difference is the surface protection. The Premium version is covered by Sapphire crystal glass rather than the Corning Gorilla Glass 3 on the standard one. The frame of the premium version is made with stainless steel while the material of the standard’s frame is Aluminum alloy. They both have a ceramic back. Thanks to such scratched protection, the Mi Watch hasn’t been scratched during my daily uses. The Mi Watch features a 1.78-inch AMOLED screen with a PPI of 326, which provides a pretty good viewing experience. Meanwhile, it also supports a feature of the always-on display, which will lead to shorter battery endurance.

A crown and a power button are arranged on its right side, and a microphone is placed between these two mechanisms. Combining with the touch screen, the operation experience is pretty good. Rotate the crown to scroll up or down the content; short press the crown to enter the application list or return to the previous layer; long-press the crown to wake up the voice assistant.

On the left edge, it features a single speaker, which allows you to play music or have a conversation without earphones. Inside the watch, Xiaomi equipped a Qualcomm snapdragon 3100 processor, which was based on Qualcomm’s 2013 snapdragon 400 mobile processor. So compared to the latest mobile phones, it’s not a surprising option. But we’ve seen it drive some other smartwatch running the Wear OS in 2019, like the watches from Fossil and Misfit. And it also gets 1GB ram and 8GB storage with a 570mAh battery. So, there is no need to worry about its performance on running these apps. But please, please forget gaming. You definitely won’t play games on a watch.

Software

Well, I just mentioned Wear OS. The Xiaomi Watch layers MIUI For Watch on the interface of Wear OS. It’s the first watch to run a custom interface on Google’s smartwatch operating system. You can install over 40 apps from the Watch App store, including lighter versions of MIUI apps like Recorder, Notes, Mi home and a few third party’s popular apps like Sogo maps and so on. The app store now is accessible to third-party developers, so there should be more options for users in the near future. But pay attention here. The Mi watch now is mainly available in China. Most of the conversation apps you can install are from china. Because it’s more targeting in China market rather than in consideration of global users’ habits.

Connectivity

Another reason why Xiaomi defined the Mi watch as a small phone is wireless connectivity. The Mi Watch supports Bluetooth, Wifi, GPS, and NFC connections, and meanwhile, the Snapdragon 3100 platform supports 4G e-sim connectivity, which in true allows you to take the watch as a small phone for standalone calls, music streaming and other basic functions. So when you want to enjoy outdoors for a while such as running, swimming or just having a cup of coffee, there is no need to carry on your phone but just make sure you wear the Wrist phone, the Mi Watch.

Fitness Tracking

Thanks to the success of Mi band series, Xiaomi continues its typical features of fitness tracking. The Mi Watch can track 10 physical activities, including walking, running, swimming, climbing and other workout trackings. Besides, it also supports heart-rate monitoring. It enables users to track their heart-rate every 30mins or turn on real-time monitoring. But the real-time monitoring would cut down the battery endurance of the watch. As a result, I suggest to turn it on only when you are exercising.

Battery

A warm detail here is that when the battery is completely discharged, the Mi Watch will turn on the watch mode to display time only. And it just turns into a watch only. According to the official specifications, the watch can last for 36 hours. But in our test of daily use, it’s safe to say that it could last for the whole day when turning on some connectivity or functions like wifi, Bluetooth, always-on-display and real-time heart-rate monitoring.

Watch Faces

Compared to a traditional watch, one of the greatest pleasures of a smartwatch is the switchable dial theme. The Mi Watch has a large number of dial themes for you. You can even replace the picture in the watch album as the background of the watch face, just like changing the wallpaper on your phone.

WaterProofness

We received a lot of concerns about its waterproofness. After our simple test, well it did have waterproofness to a certain extent. And even we can say that there is no problem that you want to swim with it. But Xiaomi doesn’t release its certificated waterproof level, and they claimed that the Mi Watch supports swimming in shallow water but doesn’t apply to a hot shower, steam bath, or diving. And the waterproofness will be weakened as time goes by. And the water damage won’t be included in the Mi Watch warranty. So just pay attention to the risk you take.

Conclusion

If you were a fan of the Xiaomi device and own a lot of Xiaomi smart home devices, the Mi Watch would be one of the Xiaomi products that you won’t miss. The Mi Watch can become a central processor to control all these devices. But the problem is that the Mi Home app has only supported the Chinese language so far.

The 4000mAh battery with 65W superfast charging makes the phone become one of the smartphones with the best endurance performance. In our test, you can get a full charge for this 4000mAh battery only in around 30mins. By charging it only for 5 minutes, the battery can gain 27 percent power. And the Reno Ace has pretty good charging compatibility. It also supports other rapid charging technologies like USB-PD and Qualcomm’s Quick Charge.

Cameras

As for the camera combination, the OPPO Reno Ace brought 4 rear cameras to meet different photography requirements. A 48MP SONY IMX586 camera for primary use, a 13MP telephoto camera with 5x hybrid zoom capacity, an 8MP super-wide-angle camera and a 2MP monochrome camera.

The OPPO Reno maintains its likable color style with high saturation. Meanwhile, 48MP resolution provides good sharpness for daily shooting. The wide-angle camera is quite practical for landscape photography. But a problem is that the color differences between the primary camera and the wide-angle camera are a bit obvious. For some night scenes, Reno Ace provides a night mode to balance the general exposure. From the sample, it did achieve a better brightness in general but still had overexposure at some extremely bright detail.

However, hand holding still is not able to guarantee perfect stabilization. inspired by camera accessories, smartphones with glowing camera capacity are possible to challenge the general market with their born talent, such as a large preview display, convenience, and powerful processing chips. Especially compared to those expensive DSLRs, a smartphone is a necessity for a modern person, which even costs less, not to mention the various lenses and so on.

You can find that even the accessories for smartphones generally are not that expensive, or we can say they are actually targeting people like you, who are not pros and won’t pay much on smartphone filming but looking forward to sharing stories with the great video quality.

Now it’s time.

Design

Well, let’s look at their design. The DJI OSMO mobile 3 finally realized one of the most important features of a mobile stabilizer is convenience. The smaller size plus the foldable arm could save much space for your travel baggage. However, compared to the other two, it still not the best choice. The other two are much more pocket-available. especially for the Feiyu Vlog Pocket, the small foldable body allows you to carry it without gathering surrounding eyes. While for the Zhiyun Smooth Q2, though it has the most elegant design, the metal body leads a heavier weight as it brings such great workmanship. Meanwhile, from Q2’s design, it’s not hard to notice the design accuracy. For example, it’s the only one among the three that you can place it on the ground, even with a phone. As for the other two, you can have a small tripod included for ground placement.

Convenience

One of the best measurements of their convenience is TIME. So, we did a simple test on how long they will take to get ready filming.

There is no surprise that the Feiyu vlog pocket is taking the lead of the race. But we can see all the three gimbals actually did not take much time as the gaps were not very significant.

Stabilization (video)

To judge the performance of a gimbal, the most important standard is always its stabilization. so let’s see some cuts and watch how they really performed during different motions (Please check it in the video).

Operation

The DJI Osmo 3 has multiple features for meeting filmers’ different filming conditions, which did bring a lot of fun when we were working with it. However, it’s quite complicated when we try to figure out all the operations from distinguishing from the button M and the trigger on the back. For example, you could dual-click the button M to switch the phone directions, and triple-click it to get sleep mode. Meanwhile, the  M is also used for switch between photo mode and video mode with a single click, and power options with a press and hold operation. And it’s just for the operation for the button M. For more shooting mode, you have to distinguish the operations of ‘press and hold’, ‘single click’, ‘dual-click’, ‘triple-click’, and ‘single click, then press and hold’. And the next time I used it; I have to make it clear again.

For the Feiyu vlog pocket, it goes to the opposite extreme. There are only two buttons and a trigger for all physical operations. You can only dual-click the power button for direction change beside the power option, and click a start button to start shooting. Holding the trigger can maintain a follow mode to have rotating angles. And more operations would be available on the Feiyu App. Such solutions are more intuitive and user-friendly.

While for the ZHIYUN Smooth Q2, it’s more like a product with much thinking on simplifying their operation logic with limited buttons. The Joystick is integrated with not only controlling directions but also switching 5 different modes. ‘One-click‘’ for the next mode, and dual-click for the last mode. and the indicator would help you identify which mode you’re working with. As a result, though the gimbal has 5 shooting modes, we could quickly change the mode as we wanted.

Software supports

All of the three gimbals have their customized mobile APPs, with which we are able to find a lot of interesting functions. For example, in the DJI OSMS APP, after connecting the gimbal, you can get a follow mode through selecting a subject on the preview interface, which is available in any mode. So, you can shoot a time-lapse video with a focus of a target subject. Meanwhile, you can have a professional filming experience on the APP to get a more accurate image manually.

A highlight of the OSMO App is the story mode, which brings you over 10 editing samples with fantastic background music and interesting transition style. All you need to do is to enter a sample, then follow the tutorial on preview, and choose shooting time for every cut. It makes filming much easier for those who have not much knowledge of filming but try so hard to please your girlfriend.

For Feiyu vlog pocket, because the gimbal itself only provides basic operations, using the app can help filmer reach more practical functions. So considering multiple filming demands of vloggers, Feiyu applies some customized features for both photos taking and video taking. In photo taking, you can find panorama modes and ultra-wide-angle mode, even though there is no wide-angle camera on your smartphone. And some further updates here, the overlapping mode and light rail mode. such professional techniques are no longer only able on the DSLR, but also able on your smartphone. And no more difficult camera settings but just only one click with the Feiyu vlog pocket. For video taking, the convenience is expanded to wider uses, like Dolly zoom, static timelapse, track timelapse and light rail video. Without much effort, the gimbal will help you reach some fantastic cuts which used to be seen only in professional films.

For the Zhiyun smooth Q2, the updated APP also carries on the Dolly zoom mode and time-lapse options. But compared to the other two, the application simplified the options and operations of the APP viewfinder but also reserved most of the main shooting options. one of the features that could not be found in the other two is the latest vortex mode. Thanks to the all-direction pan arm, the filmer could create a special view with a smooth 360° rotation.

Conclusion

After we experience these three gimbals for over a month. We are pretty confused to recommend the best gimbal for you. We used to draw a conclusion that the Zhiyun Smooth Q2 was the best mobile gimbal. Well, to some extent, it still is. The metal body helps the gimbal achieve a better-stabilizing effect with full angle rotation. Besides, the excellent features like the longest endurance, reverse charging, user-friendly gimbal operations and so on, made it become the most trustworthy gimbal for our video shooting. But meanwhile, the simplified software and blocked the view on a few android phones sometimes caused discomfort, though such problems could be solved with manual adjustment. But surely, it’s still a gimbal that’s worth being called with the term ‘professional’.

For the Feiyu vlog Pocket, its biggest advantage is small and simple, while the most significant drawback is also the too simple body. Though it integrated a lot of features into their APP, the general experience would be affected by the complicated but functional software. To be fair, we would admire its top convenience and recommend it for most vloggers who are planning to travel and record their stories.

As for the DJI OSMO Mobile 3, it’s more like a good product with some compromise. For example, though it’s foldable and claimed to be pocketable, we still are not going to give it a credit on the convenience, not to mention its complicated operations. You always need to unfold the gimbal before loading the phone. The good message is that the DJI team brought stable software with effective tutorials. So if you are a person who has the patience to get used to the inconvenience, you probably would love it.

In 2019, as powerful smartphone cameras become one of the most important phone features, it’s easier than ever to shoot great video with our phones. With a correct app and correct accessory, better shots will be much easier. The new released Zhiyun Smooth Q2 gimbal is no doubt that kind of correct accessory.

However, in our review videos, what we used to avoid filming with were phones. Though it’s the most convenient filming device, the shortages like a rolling shutter, poor stabilization, and low image quality made us give up the convenience. We generally used DSLR or mirrorless as part of a filming system. For our shoots, we use all kinds of filming tools, such as tripods, gimbals, and sliders. But thanks to the latest high-quality camera integrated into phones, using a phone to filming our review videos is becoming possible, especially when increasing accessories like gimbals are bringing it to another level. And after we received the Smooth Q2, it’s much sure that it stays not just as a possibility but more a choice.

Design

The Smooth Q2 is a 3-axis hand-held gimbal that is compatible with most smartphones (weight≤260g). Compared to its last generation, the Smooth Q, the Q2 is smaller to take less space of your backpack, which is even the smallest phone gimbal with full stabilization that I’ve ever seen. The smooth Q2 weighs 404 grams and is made from metal, so the build quality is excellent compared to the plastic of the Q1. And the rubber handle cover also leads to a comfortable experience when need to hold it for a long time.

For operation, the smooth Q2 cuts down all the controls to two buttons and one joystick, which is pretty intuitive and convenient. To start your filming, it’s pretty easy: install the phone, and make sure set the balance of the phone correctly, and then press and hold the power button for 2 seconds, and then use the joystick to choose a shooting mode you like. So that’s it.

Multiple modes&features

The Smooth Q2 supports 360 degrees of rotation and has 3-axis stabilization, containing a Tilt motor, a Roll motor and a Pan motor. Upgraded from the 3 modes of the smooth Q, the Q2 supports 5 shooting modes including a Pan-follow mode, a full-locking mode, a full-follow mode, a point of view mode, and a Vortex mode. Let’s see how it works with every mode.

The Zhiyun Smooth Q2 really takes care of any previous problems. They almost fix all the problems of the Q1, like body material, weight, operation, and phone-grip design. It seems that they are trying so hard to bring a final product to meet customers’ demand, easy operation for general users, professional stabilization for filmmakers.

No matter which mode we used, the gimbal keeps most movements incredibly smooth and stabilized. Even when you move the gimbal all around, the picture will remain stabilized with default pan-follow mode.

In the ‘point of view’ mode, it simulates a first-person perspective as a kind of special filming. It guarantees the fast reaction and smooth movement even when we move synchronously along three axes from all directions.

To switch from one mode to another one, all you need to do is to click the joystick and doable click for the last mode. Otherwise, the joystick enables the filmmaker to adjust the camera angle or pan in any direction with any shooting modes.

The Smooth Q2 supports a fast switch between ‘selfie mode’ and the others. Just dual-click the lower button, which is pretty a smart design for the vloggers to have interaction with the camera easily and smoothly.

With a quick Bluetooth connection with the native phone, the Smooth Q2 supports direct control over the phone camera app. As a result, if you prefer using phone cameras, you can easily control the photo/video shutter within fingertips on the gimbal.

Battery&charge

The gimbal can be charged via USB type-c and the battery lasts around 12-17 hours, which definitely can bring a reliable endurance when having outdoor filming. You can charge it with a USB charger or a power-bank. Otherwise, it can also provide power charging for your phone when filming.

Overall the Smooth Q2 has almost professional-quality stabilization and smooth movement in any direction. There is no perceived vibration or shake when using it during the shooting. the Zhiyun Brand is not just focusing on the hardware building, but also developing their exclusive software, the ZY Play app to expand their gimbals’ capacity. Like using the latest app, it supports a tracking mode to automatically stay focus and follow the movement of the target object. The Zhiyun team claims that they are testing the latest App for the final compatibility with the Smooth Q2, and it will come soon. We are really looking forward to seeing how the app can enhance the possibility of the Q2 gimbal.

Conclusion

In conclusion, according to the pricing of the Q1, we believe that without question, the Q2 will be an incredible value. Although we haven’t tested the compatibility with the action cameras like Gopros, Based on the Q1 solution, there should be no problem if you are thinking to let it work with those action cameras, but before that, you should buy an appropriate mount for the camera grip without block the lens or vision. Smooth Q2 has a 1/4’’ thread hole on the bottom so that you can mount it on a pole or tripod to access more special angles.

As a result, the Smooth Q2 gimbal is more like a product to help general users solve the main filming problems with great user experience. It allows you to start creating without the limitation of hardware, only if you have a powerful camera phone, and a Zhiyun Smooth Q2.

So far, we have received all kinds of smartphone gaming controllers. Thanks to a growing market and phenomenal games producers, mobile gamers increasingly regard their gaming equipment, not just the phone but also the accessory. Smartphone has a natural advantage that everyone has their phone in the pocket. A smartphone is necessary for a modern human, while a home console probably isn’t. So that’s also the reason why those phenomenal games basically can be aimed at a wider user base. Appearance & design

The whole collection contains three units, a one-handed gamepad, a stinger, and a cooling fan. The identical design brings a highly identifiable appearance, though they may look strange from other controllers. Unlike Xbox controller lookalikes for totally off-screen operation, the left-hand gamepad sticks the phone pretty well with a reliable pop-up gripper. And the smaller stinger firmly grips your phone on the right. And you can adjust its upper mapping point by dragging. The RGB cooling fan can stick on the back by three small suckers as long as your phone has a flat and smooth surface.

The plastic material for the cover decreases the whole weight for comfort in those long sessions. Because when playing games with a gamepad, its overall weight with the phone has a great impact on our gaming experience. To boost the whole grip feeling, the surface gets matt processed, which guarantee the touching comfort when holding it. Other detail like the ergonomic curve and the rubber coat also lead to a better gripping experience.

The main reason that we pick it as our first gamepad, is the small size with separable units. As we just mentioned, a smartphone is a device that you have to carry on, and you can play mobile games on it anytime and anywhere. Therefore, it’s probably the best choice among the full-functional gamepads without taking much space.

Connection

We test its connection and compatibility with many phone brands. The Bluetooth 4.0 connection matches the phones pretty fast on both iOS and Android. Though several times it disturbed the screen touch function at the first connection, it reworks well after several attempts. To open the mapping adjustment, you need to download the official Flydigi App and open it through the USB Debugging. Both the Instructional Manual and the App only support Chinese, so probably it would bring you some tiny difficulties to figure out all the features. And it only supports a USB type-c port, and your android devices should run Android 4.0 or newer. The connection is pretty stable which has nothing complained. And it doesn’t support vertical games. As nobody wants to play it vertically with a gamepad, it’s really not a drawback.

Gaming performance

There is no united operational solution on mobile games, so the pre-customization is important. We tried several games like PUBG Mobile, Honkai Impact 3, Arena of Valor, Fortnite, Minecraft and Knives Out mainly on the OnePlus 7, Xiaomi Mi9 and Blackshark 2 & 2 Pro. It’s a totally different feeling when I play those games with the Wasp 2 units. It almost changed the gaming experience and boosted much of my game skills. Compared to those Xbox and Switch controllers, Wasp 2 combines the gamepad and screen-touch operation and bring it to a balance. If touching only, our clumsy fingers would impact our vision, and be not able to find the virtual buttons accurately. And it probably would take you quite a long session to get it used to the positions and maintain a strange holding state. If gamepad only, the nature of touch-based smartphone will not be taken full advantage.

Especially, when we play battle royal games like Fortnite and PUBG Mobile, it requires faster reaction and multiple-button combination. Then Gamepads are solving most problems, but not all problems. Because most battle royal games or 3D games required vision rotation. The best solution right now is the PC mouse. But sorry we cannot bring it to mobile games. But a second choice is on the table, the touching. The best solutions on a smartphone still cannot leave the touching operation. Wasp 2’s design is probably aimed at the dilemma, but they don’t simply jam too many buttons and cause much burden for your right hand. They arrange the limited 6 buttons on the comfortable position for fingers, including one stinger at the back. Otherwise, the additional right stinger is much clever as it does not just free the left hands but also avoid blocking our vision.

During playing PUBG Mobile and other Battle royal games, the best solution is to map ‘aiming’ to the right stinger, and ‘shooting’ to the rear LT button of left gamepad respectively, and leave only my right thumb to control the vision rotation. No vision blocked, no reaction laggy, and not much learning cost.

RGB fan

The RGB fan has tree gears to adjust the airflow. As a gaming accessory, a gradual RGB effect is not allowed to be absent. A problem here is that though it’s pretty small size, it still takes a significant rear space. It probably not fit the small-size phone with a curved or rough surface, especially when it works with the other two units. As it causes holding discomfort to some extent, it is not in our recommended list.

Another drawback for the whole units is the power charging. Because there is no indicator for power, so probably you would worry about running out of the power next minute, or just find out that it runs out the power last minute without charging.

Vivo has unveiled a new smartphone called Vivo Z5 in China today. It has arrived as an advanced version of the Vivo Z5x phone that was made official in the country in May. The major highlights of the Vivo Z5 include tall aspect display with in-screen fingerprint sensor, Snapdragon 712 chipset, 48-megapixel triple rear cameras and big battery.

Vivo Z5 Specifications and Features

The Vivo Z5 measures 159.53 x 75.23 x 8.13mm and it weighs 189.6 grams. The smartphone features a high gloss polycarbonate chassis like the Vivo Z5x. It is fitted with a waterdrop-style notch enabled 6.38-inch AMOLED display that produces 1080 x 2340 pixels full HD+ resolution. The elongated screen offers an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. Vivo has added a quick responding in-display fingerprint reader on the device. The Vivo Z5 offers 90 percent screen-to-body ratio and it carries support for features like Always-on Display and DC dimming.

The Snapdragon 712 chipset is present under the hood of the Vivo Z5 smartphone. It is accompanied by 6 GB and 8 GB of RAM. The smartphone comes with up to 256 GB of UFS 2.1 storage. The smartphone does not feature a microSD card slot. It is backed by a 4,500mAh battery that is equipped with support for 22.5W FlashCharge technology through USB-C. It can be also for reverse charging other devices.

There is a triple camera setup on the rear shell of the Vivo Z5 smartphone. Xiaomi has built a good reputation in global budget phone market largely due to the success of the series A. The latest model of series A, Xiaomi Mi A3, was officially announced on July 17 in Europe for a starting price of 249 euros. However, for those who are familiar with Xiaomi latest products, it is not exactly a new model. The specs of Xiaomi Mi A3 is completely the same as the Xiaomi CC9e, which was released this month earlier. For software setups, the Xiaomi A3 runs the Android One, while the Xiaomi CC9e runs the MIUI. Due to different regional marketing, the twins have diverse missions. The CC9e is targeting the young who especially require high camera performance but with a budget price. The A3 more shoulders the mission to continue the global success of the A series in the budget segment.

The Xiaomi A3 is a Mi9-appearance smartphone featuring the Snapdragon 665 processor, 48MP triple rear cameras, 32MP front camera, and a large 4030mAh battery. The great camera performance is the main highlight, which is never seen on other budget models. And it’s also the first model of A series to have an in-screen fingerprint sensor. The 720P display could be the most disappointing department. So will it please the consumers with outstanding pros and cons?

The CC9e and A3 is the simplified version of the CC9, reserving the same triple cameras and front camera. As for the global CC9, Xiaomi probably renames it as the Xiaomi A3 Pro. So, if you are more interested in the Xiaomi CC9 or the A3 Pro, please check our review video last week.

Appearance

The appearance is nothing surprising as we learned that it continues the Mi9-design and CC9-design. So, we briefly compare the main details between the Xiaomi A3 and CC9:

1. The same color options as the CC9, White Lover, Blue Planet, Dark prince.
2. The same rear setups: Triple cameras are at the upper left, and the Xiaomi test logo is aligned vertically down the cameras.
3. A waterdrop notch with the same 32MP selfie camera.
4. Size is smaller than the CC9e due to the smaller display size, 6.08-inch 720p AMOLED display.
5. It feels a bit thinner and lighter, weighs 173g. The phone size provides a good handling experience.
6. Unfortunately, due to the budget pricing, A3 has a 6mm chin down the display, which is almost the most distinct change of the appearance here.

In the budget market, it’s pretty rare to have such back design, coming from the unique rear color technique and all-curved rear glass. And you don’t need to worry the glass durability because Xiaomi still uses the Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on the Xiaomi A3. The large 4030mAh battery is reserved in the A3, although it is thinner than the CC9. Considering its pricing as a budget phone, it’s definitely a surprise. The Xiaomi A3 supports both face unlock and in-screen fingerprint unlock. Though it’s not as fast as Xiaomi CC9, it won’t take you more than 1 second.

Cameras

Rear triple cameras

Another outstanding point is the camera, no matter the front or the rear combination. Yes, It does mean that you can have a flagship-level photography experience on a budget phone. As far as the cameras are concerned, the Xiaomi Mi A3 on the rear packs a SONY 48-megapixel primary camera with an f/1.79 aperture; a second 8-megapixel camera with an f/2.2 aperture and a third 2-megapixel camera with an f/2.4 aperture. It sports a 32-megapixel camera on the front for selfies, with an f/2.0 aperture. The camera combination here is the same as the Xiaomi CC9 has. The primary camera is the SONY IMX586 camera, which also can be found on Mi9 and OnePlus 7 Pro. The bad message is that all the cameras lack OIS, so it might not able to perform the stabilization as well as those flagships, can do.

The 48MP primary camera ensures that the image reaches much detail so that you can have your second creation by cutting the image. Under low light conditions, It supports a ‘4 in 1’ big-pixel feature to help you shoot brighter photos with better detail. Under bright conditions, the Xiaomi A3 performs great with natural color reproduction and fine contrast. Its fast imaging speed is also impressive, which is useful to capture fleeting moments. Even in backlight environment, the Xiaomi A3 can also guarantee the imaging quality with a balanced exposure.

The night mode on A3 probably is the highlight of the camera performance. The general brightness got improved significantly and a balanced exposure shows better detail of both bright parts and dark parts. The dark sky has better brightness and more detail, while the bright text on the building is much clearer with correct exposure.

For the second wide-angle camera, it performs better when shooting landscape with bright conditions. The image has a good distortion correction and a strong visual sense. When we bring the wide-angle camera to low-light conditions, it got the same problem with the Xiaomi CC9, such as detail losing and shadow blurring. The third 2MP camera mainly does the depth calculation for portrait mode. With its work, we can have a natural background blurring and relatively correct edge detection for still life photography.

Front camera

The 32MP selfie camera is another selling point of the A3. Our colleague Nadine took self-portraits and compared it with the samples of the Xiaomi CC9. She found that due to the diverse camera Apps, those additional beauty features in CC9 disappeared in the A3. The natural tone of her skin and good texture does please her especially when she zooms in to look at the facial detail. And she said that after trying it at different scenes, the A3 camera recognizes her face well no matter under what kind of extreme lighting conditions.

As Nadine mentioned, it runs a basic camera App but not the Xiaomi camera App. We have no additional camera features like Mimoji, and post-editing features as well on the Xiaomi A3, while these features are found in the Chinese version, Xiaomi CC9e. We believe that such kind of additional features can make phone photography more interesting for users.

The main difference between the CC9e and A3 is their operating system. The Xiaomi A3 runs the latest Android One, while the CC9 runs MIUI. Android One is one of the best android original systems. It has proved its good performance on mid-range phones. No exception on the Xiaomi A3. It reaches a good fluency but laggy a bit when running most Android apps, and includes all the Google services and tools as well. And unlike the MIUI, it doesn’t require users to pay much learning cost. While the MIUI has a Chinese-language-based voice assistant, the Android One gives you a much universal one, the google assistant. So, it’s probably one important reason why you want to have a Xiaomi A3.

Drawbacks: Display

Xiaomi A3 features a 6.08-inch Super AMOLED 720 x 1560p display up front with a waterdrop notch. this 720p display definitely can be the biggest reason for you to give it up. When looking at it, the grainy experience does not please me at all. So, compared to those 1080p displays, there is nothing to praise. Processor & performance

Another drawback of the Xiaomi A3 is the processor. The A3 is powered by a 2GHz Snapdragon 665 processor. And according to our sources, it comes with two memory versions, 4GB RAM 64GB ROM, and 6GB RAM 128GB ROM. The model in our hands is the 4GB RAM version. Unlike the Chinese version Xiaomi CC9e, Xiaomi A3 lacks a ‘Game Turbo’ feature which can slightly optimize the gaming performance. In our 30-min gaming test with PUBG Mobile, the frame rate reached 29fps when playing under mid-graphic settings. But it also got frequent fluctuation during the test. So it won’t be a great experience when playing the PUBG Mobile on the Xiaomi A3. Though it may be the same result when playing other games requiring fast response and fluent graphics, the A3 can still run most mobile games without problems.

Battery & charging

As we mentioned, because the Xiaomi CC9 has a big battery capacity and a 720p display, you don’t need to worry about the power durability. But it doesn’t support any fast-charging solution. Using the included 10W charger, it takes more than 2 hours to get full-charged.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I would say that it’s definitely one of the best choices in the real budget market. It has pretty fast in-screen fingerprint unlock, triple rear cameras and 32MP front camera and so on. It’s no doubt that it is going to refresh the budget market and how producers making low-price models. But, at the same time, the 720P display could be so disappointing that it makes a hash of the good reputation of the A-series. Anyway, it is undeniable that the Xiaomi A3 is going to be a powerful challenger for the title of 2019 best budget phone.

When Apple iPhones arrived in China, the company started reigning on the number one spot and it remained like that for few years.

However, in 2016, iPhone lost the title of best-selling smartphone in China for the first time and the Cupertino company seems to continue its poor streak this year.

A recent market analysis by Canalys for the second quarter of 2017 has revealed that Apple is sitting on the fifth position in the Chinese smartphone market.

Here are the top 4 smartphone brands in China ranked by Canalys based on the number of phones they shipped:

1. Huawei: 23 million
2. OPPO: 21 million
3. Vivo: 16 million
4. Xiaomi: 15 million

Xiaomi has taken the fourth position and pushed Apple to the fifth spot. Samsung and Meizu are other popular brands that are present in the top 10 list of smartphone vendor in China. The top four brands constitute around 75 percent of 113 million smartphone shipments in the country.

Apple’s iPhone sales have declined by 14 percent year over year in the last quarter. By this rate, Apple is at risk of losing its fifth position in the Chinese market.

Apple is expected to see high profits margins in the last quarter of this year because of the highly anticipated the 10^th anniversary iPhone dubbed as iPhone 8.

Apple’s sales are expected to grow to $9.96 billion in the last quarter and iPhone 8 can possibly turn Apple into a trillion-dollar company. The iPhone 8 is expected to revamp the influence of the Apple brand in China.

Recent information has revealed that the Cupertino company has started the trial production of the rumored iPhone 7S, iPhone 7S Plus and iPhone 8.

Information coming from Zhengzhou Foxconn unit reveals that it is manufacturing around 200 units of upcoming iPhones on daily basis. It means the mass production of 2017 iPhones have not started yet.

The company is expected to increase the production by manufacturing hundreds of thousands of 2017 iPhones on daily basis in the coming weeks. Recent rumors had claimed that the production of iPhone 8 had been delayed, but newer information suggests that the production of iPhone 8 is well on track. However, Apple may produce lesser units of the iPhone 8 at launch.
