Huawei is Facing Challenges – There is not Enough Supply to Meet Growing Demand

Huawei Technologies has recently been in the spotlight for its Mate 60 Pro 5G, showcasing not just a new product but a different approach to overcoming production and supply chain challenges. The journey of the Mate 60 Pro, from production struggles to impressive sales figures, offers a unique glimpse into the resilience and adaptability of Huawei in the face of adversity. However, the company seems to be clearly having issues with supply and demand.

The company is also limiting purchase orders for customers

Huawei’s decision to introduce a pre-order system for the Mate 60 Pro stemmed from an inability to meet the surging demand. This move, as explained by Counterpoint Research senior analyst Wang Yang, was a strategic step to buy time for securing orders from suppliers. The core of this challenge lies in the advanced Kirin 9000s processor, around which a shroud of secrecy has complicated supply chain dynamics, delaying the parts provision process significantly.

Huawei

In a rather unconventional step, Huawei launched a subscription program for the Mate 60 Pro, promising delivery within 90 days of ordering. This approach, limiting purchases to one unit per consumer, reflects an attempt to manage supply efficiently while maintaining customer interest.

Despite these hurdles, the Mate 60 Pro has achieved notable success. Within eight weeks of its launch, the series recorded 2.4 million units in domestic sales, according to Counterpoint data. This figure is particularly impressive when considering the background of US trade sanctions that Huawei has been grappling with.

The Mate 60 series, especially the Pro model, has become a symbol of Huawei’s resilience. The company’s ability to navigate through supply shortages and still secure a strong market position, especially during the Singles’ Day shopping season, is commendable. Senior analyst Ivan Lam from Counterpoint highlights the sustained popularity of the Mate 60 series, despite limited daily sales due to supply constraints.

Steal a Glimpse at Canoo’s Lifestyle Delivery Vehicles, Fresh Out of Production

Canoo, an up-and-coming electric vehicle maker, has recently begun shipping its Lifestyle Delivery Vehicles (LDVs) from its new production base in Oklahoma City. This move is not just a win for Canoo, but also a big step forward for Oklahoma, marking the state’s re-entry into vehicle manufacturing after a long gap since 2006.

The company’s Oklahoma City Plant is expected to create over 1300 jobs

Canoo reached out to GizmoChina, elaborating that the OMES (Office of Management and Enterprise Services) has not purchased any vehicles at the time of writing this article and no vehicles have been delivered to the state. However, the company has plans to purchase 3 vehicles before the year comes to a close.

Canoo Electric

This development is significant for several reasons. First, it showcases Canoo’s growth and commitment to expanding its manufacturing capabilities. The company is actively hiring for its facilities in Oklahoma City and Pryor, aiming to create over 1,300 jobs backed by a $320 million investment. This job creation and economic boost are vital for Oklahoma, offering new opportunities in a state eager to diversify its economy.

Secondly, the Canoo LDV represents innovation in electric vehicle technology. Built on Canoo’s Multi-Purpose Platform (MPP), these vehicles are versatile, available as either passenger or cargo vans. The recent announcement of a larger variant, the LDV 190, highlights Canoo’s focus on meeting diverse customer needs.

Canoo’s broader impact extends beyond just vehicle production. Earlier this year, the company secured incentive agreements with the state of Oklahoma and the Cherokee Nation, potentially worth up to $113 million, contingent on job creation and investment targets. Moreover, recent funding agreements, including a $45 million investment from a foreign institutional investor, indicate growing confidence in Canoo’s vision and capabilities.

Italian Motorcycle Brand, MV Agusta Unveils a New E-Bike, the Cortina Edizione Limitata

Electric bicycles (e-bikes) are emerging as a significant player, reshaping how we think about mobility. A striking example of this trend is the entrance of MV Agusta, a renowned Italian motorcycle brand, into the e-bike market with its latest offering, the Cortina Edizione Limitata.

The sleek aluminum tube adds to the bike’s overall appeal

MV Agusta is no stranger to the e-bike scene, thanks to its dedicated sub-brand, E-MV Agusta. However, the Cortina Edizione Limitata stands out in their line-up. Unlike its performance-focused siblings, this model is a lightweight commuter e-bike that combines practicality with an artistic flair.

Electric

The Cortina’s design is a blend of functionality and elegance. Its frame, made from aluminum and carbon fiber, not only ensures durability but also accommodates various rider sizes and cargo needs. The aluminum tubing is sleek, adding to the bike’s overall aesthetic appeal. Furthermore, the carbon fiber front fork contributes to its light weight and precise handling.

Powering the Cortina is the Mahle X35 motor, a compact and efficient unit. This motor, integrated into the rear hub, offers a perfect balance between size and performance. It delivers 250 watts of power and 40 newton-meters of torque, making the ride smooth and enjoyable. The bike’s battery is cleverly concealed within the motor’s housing, offering up to 75 kilometers of assistance per charge.

The bike’s weight, just 15.3 kilograms, is impressive. This feat is achieved through the use of lightweight materials and a compact powertrain. The bike is equipped with a 10-speed Shimano drivetrain and Magura MT4 disc brakes, ensuring reliable performance. The Pirelli Cinturato Gravel H tires are perfect for varied terrains and weather conditions.

Notably, the Cortina doesn’t just focus on performance; it also boasts high-quality components like Ritchey leather grips and saddle, and a CNC-milled stem and seatpost. Priced at around 3,800 euros ($4,100), it represents a significant investment in sustainable and stylish urban mobility.

Poco X6 5G gets IMDA certified ahead of global launch

Redmi Recently launched the Redmi Note 13 lineup in China, and now, the brand is expected to launch these devices in the global market. A recent report revealed that the brand is planning to launch the Redmi Note 13 Pro (Chinese model) as the Poco X6 5G in the global market. Now, the device has picked up the IMDA certification.

Poco X6 Pro IMDA

The IMDA certification of the Poco X6 5G features model number 23122PCD1G. The certification confirms that the device will feature 5G, Bluetooth, WiFi, and NFC capabilities. In addition to that, it is also kind of a green light to launch in Singapore. Previously, the device emerged on BIS certification, greenlighting a potential Indian launch in the coming days. Although not much has been confirmed in the specs department, we can go by the spec sheet of the Redmi Note 13 Pro (Chinese model) to get an idea of what to expect from the Poco X6 5G.

Poco X6 5G specs (expected)

Based on the specs of the Redmi Note 13 Pro, we expect the Poco X6 5G to feature a large 6.67-inch OLED panel with a 1.5K resolution of 1220 x 2712 pixels resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. If we get one-to-one specs, the device could also come with Gorilla Glass Victus protection, which is quite rare to see in the lower end of the mid-range.

Redmi Note 13 Pro

Under the hood, the device is likely to feature a Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 chip. The battery could be a 5,100mAh pack with 67W fast charging. Nothing is clear about RAM and storage at this point, however, the global variants will likely not be getting crazy specs like its Chinese counterpart which features up to 6 GB of RAM and 512 GB. A more modest 8 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of storage is likely to be the available options outside of China.

Coming to the cameras, the device could feature a 200-megapixel (main, with OIS) + 8-megapixel (ultra-wide) + 2-megapixel (macro) triple camera unit. There could also be a 16-megapixel front camera. That being said, rumors suggest that the global model could be nerfed down with a 64-megapixel primary camera replacing the 200-megapixel sensor.

Qualcomm has recently announced a new Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chip, which we could expect to see on upcoming mid-range phones.

In September, Tesla set its sights on importing components valued between $1.7 billion and $1.9 billion from India for the current fiscal year, building on the $1 billion worth of components procured in the previous year.

Minister Goyal’s visit to the U.S. was marked by discussions centered around Tesla’s ventures in India, including the prospect of establishing a factory, manufacturing an affordable $24,000 car, augmenting component imports, and developing a comprehensive charging infrastructure across the nation. Expressing his satisfaction, Goyal highlighted the presence of Indian professionals in senior roles at Tesla.

However, the absence of Tesla’s charismatic CEO Elon Musk during Goyal’s visit raised eyebrows. Goyal, citing Musk’s illness, conveyed the Tesla founder’s apologies and mutual interest in a future meeting. This followed Musk’s meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June, where Modi encouraged substantial Tesla investments in the country.

Elon Musk had earlier hinted at the possibility of establishing a manufacturing unit in India, contingent on the success of imported vehicles, reflecting his keen interest in the Indian market. Importantly, Goyal, in September, categorically ruled out import duty concessions for Tesla, affirming a policy framework that fosters equal opportunities without differentiation or preferences. India currently imposes a 100% import duty on fully imported cars exceeding $40,000 and 70% on those priced below this threshold.

The Indian government’s strategic initiatives, including production-linked incentives (PLI) for advanced chemistry cell battery storage and auto-components, and drone industries, aim to entice Tesla’s active participation. Despite challenges posed by India’s import duties on fully imported cars, Musk views the market as promising.

Looking ahead, Elon Musk is slated to visit India in 2024, sparking anticipation around potential investments and operations. The government’s commitment to formulating inclusive policies in consultation with all stakeholders underscores its dedication to providing equal opportunities for all players in this dynamic automotive landscape.

As Tesla’s collaboration with India intensifies, the spotlight remains on how the electric vehicle giant will navigate regulatory landscapes, import duties, and local manufacturing to establish a formidable presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing automotive markets.

Google paid Samsung $8 billion to ensure its position as the default search engine, app store, and voice assistant

In a recent antitrust trial involving Google and Epic Games, significant information has come to light regarding Google’s tactics to maintain its dominant position within the Android market. A key aspect of this strategy involves its relationship with Samsung, the largest Android Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM).

Android Domination

Google’s Multibillion-Dollar Strategy to Dominate Android Ecosystem

According to a Bloomberg report, Google paid Samsung a substantial $8 billion over a four-year period to ensure that its key services, including Google Search, Google Assistant, and the Google Play Store, remained the default options on Samsung Galaxy devices. This move was part of Google’s broader agenda to solidify its presence within the Android ecosystem and discourage OEMs from promoting competing services. For instance, Samsung has its own Bixby voice assistant and Galaxy Store, which could have potentially overshadowed Google’s offerings.

James Kolotouros, Google’s Vice President for Partnerships, revealed these details during his testimony. He emphasized that Samsung’s contribution accounted for more than half of the Google Play Store’s revenue, underscoring the crucial role of Samsung devices in Google’s ecosystem.

This partnership between Google and Samsung forms part of a larger initiative by Google, known as Project Banyan, aimed at maintaining the dominance of its services on Android devices. Under this project, Google not only secured its apps’ pre-eminence on devices but also shared advertising revenue and offered incentives to OEMs for prioritizing Google’s apps. For instance, in 2020, Google proposed spending $2.9 billion, which would increase to $4.5 billion by 2023, to ensure the availability of its search, Play, and other critical apps on various devices, including those from non-Android OEMs and wireless carriers.

Furthermore, Google’s agreement with Samsung initially included a proposal to prevent the Galaxy Store from being placed on home screens, though this plan was later abandoned. This strategy was partly in response to competition from Apple, as Google aimed to improve the Android experience to attract potential iPhone switchers.

China’s EV Revolution: Defying subsidy cuts, powering global EV domination with record sales

China, the driving force behind the global electric vehicle (EV) surge, continues to defy expectations with record-breaking sales, particularly in October. Despite the conclusion of an 11-year subsidy scheme for EV purchases in 2022, local authorities in China have stepped in, offering aid, tax rebates, and subsidies, fueling a remarkable 29% year-to-date increase in September. Notably, October’s figures reveal that China’s EV demand remains robust, showcasing resilience even after subsidy cuts.

Mainland China’s dominance in the global EV market is unmistakable, representing a staggering 55% of global EV sales in H1 2023, accounting for 3.4 million units. While the growth rate has moderated to 43%, a notable decrease from the extraordinary 118% seen in H1 2022, the sheer volume underscores China’s pivotal role in the ongoing EV revolution.

The end of China’s EV support scheme did not come without challenges. Disruption, uncertainty, and a price war ensued, with Tesla leading the charge. BYD, a prominent Chinese EV brand, emerged as a leader, facing headwinds from a Tesla-led price war that posed challenges for smaller brands in the fiercely competitive market.

However, experts anticipate a continued strong performance for China in 2023, asserting its position as the world’s largest auto market and a key driver of global EV sales. The final two months of the year are projected to be seasonally high for vehicle sales in China.

As the global EV market charts new territory, China’s steadfast commitment to sustaining EV demand, despite subsidy cuts, underscores the resilience and adaptability of the country’s burgeoning electric vehicle sector. The nation’s ability to navigate challenges and maintain momentum positions it as a linchpin in the ongoing global transition toward sustainable transportation.
