US may ban key exports to Chinese chipmaker SMIC – sources

Chinese chipmaker, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) may have been under the searchlight of the US Defense Department and a new proposal could see the company being shut out from accessing key supplies from US producers. The Defense Department says that some current regulatory loopholes are being exploited by SMIC to buy critical United States technology that could be used for military purposes.

However, it is reported that the Defense Department’s proposal is not having a smooth ride as some US Commerce Department officials are making efforts to block the new proposal. SMIC is already holding the wrong end of the stick, as it has been previously blacklisted from accessing advanced manufacturing equipment from US suppliers on suspicion of ties to the Chinese military. SMIC continues to reject the claims that it has any links with the Chinese military.

Chinese companies have continued to endure stringent scrutiny and blacklisting due to suspicion that they may be fronts for the Chinese government or its military. More Chinese companies could be added to the US blacklist in the coming months. These blacklists are captured by the Commerce Department’s Entity List and the Treasury Department’s list banning US investment.

The blacklisting move comes amidst growing tensions between Beijing and Washington. Some of the issues are also related to alleged human rights violations in China’s Xinjiang region. An official response from SMIC is still expected at this time.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 overheats in the Moto Edge X30: Report

Qualcomm released their 4nm-based Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset earlier this month. The company promised a 20% leap in performance over the Snapdragon 888, which was confirmed yesterday by Motorola, who launched the first smartphone housing the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC, the Moto Edge X30.

Motorola edge x30

Earlier today, the General Manager of Motorola, Chen Jin, took to Weibo (a Chinese microblogging website) to boast the structural features of their latest flagship, including its aluminum alloy frame, which allows the device to offer excellent thermal conductivity helping keep the phone cool.

However, there might be trouble in paradise as a tweet by the popular tipster @iceUniverse, suggest that the new SD 8 Gen 1 SoC might have heating issues. The tweet reads “On moto phones, the extreme test of Snapdragon 8 Gen1 is very hot. Please be mentally prepared, 2022 may be “HOOOT” year for Android phones.”

The Moto phone mentioned in the tweet is the newly released Moto Edge X30, which undercut other brands like Xiaomi to be the first to launch a phone with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC. But the tweet warns about being mentally prepared for a ‘Hot year for Android phones’, indicating that the problem is SoC-centric rather than a bad cooling solution from Motorola.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 uses Samsung’s 4-nm node and ARM’s v9 architecture, which is highly power efficient. So, in theory, it looks like the SoC should run cooler compared to the last generation. But the issue here might be the additional performance gain, as skeptics have pointed out that Motorola might not be throttling the chip’s performance enough to keep the temperatures under control in heavy use cases.

For those unaware, thermal throttling occurs when the chip heats up due to constant heavy use like gaming, video recording, or running processor-intensive apps. To prevent the SoC from overheating and potentially damaging or degrading, Smartphone companies program temperature limits into their devices which once crossed results in slowing down of the CPU, aka throttling, to help it maintain safe temperatures and cool down. This results in a considerable loss in performance.

This cooling method is employed as OEMs have little to no room for other cooling solutions due to smartphones getting slimmer while gaining performance every year.

It is too soon to accurately tell what the root cause of this heating issue is, so stick around as we will cover any notable developments.

China could surpass US in core 21st Century technologies within a decade: Harvard

With China aggressively expanding in various fields like artificial intelligence, 5G networking, semiconductors, and more, it appears that the nation will be overtaking the US in 21st century technologies within just a decade.

China

The news arrives from a recent report from Harvard, which is titled “The Great Rivalry: China vs the US in the 21st Century” that was published by the the Belfer Centre for Science and International Affairs at the Harvard Kennedy School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The report adds that “China’s rapid rise to challenge US dominance of technology’s commanding heights has captured America’s attention.” It further adds that in some areas China “has already become No 1. In others, on current trajectories, it will overtake the US within the next decade.”

This report further emphasizes on the very real possibility of China replacing the US to become the world’s top economic and technological power, which Reuters labeled as a Sputnik moment of this generation. As of right now, the Asian country has already dethroned America to become the world’s top high tech manufacturer. The nation had produced over 250 million computers, 25 million cars, and a whopping 1.5 billion smartphones in 2020 alone, as per the Harvard report.

US CHina trade war featured

Back in October, US intelligence officials had even warned American tech firm about working with their Chinese counterparts (and by that extension the country as well), especially in the fields of I, quantum computing, bioscience, semiconductors and autonomous systems. The report states that “China is catching up and, in some cases, has already overtaken America. Unlike prior technological revolutions that took place when the nation was still a poor country, China’s meteoric rise has provided it with the funds and manpower to potentially lead this field.”

Honor X30 render leaked, rear camera design revealed

In October, Honor announced the Honor X30i and Honor X30 Max smartphones in China. Now, the brand is gearing to unleash the Honor X30 on Dec. 16 in the home market. Its rumored specs suggest that it will be positioned higher than the existing X30 models. Now, tipster Panda is Bald has shared a render to reveal the rear camera design of the Honor X30.

The leaked poster reveals that the Honor X30 will be flaunting a circular camera housing. It appears that the smartphone features a triple camera system and an LED flash. A recent leak claimed that the X30 has a 48-megapixel primary camera and a pair of 2-megapixel snappers.

Honor X30 rear design

While the Honor X30 is speculated to feature a punch-hole display, there is no image that showcases its front design. The only other thing that is known about the X30 is that it will be equipped with the Snapdragon 695 mobile platform. The other details of the smartphone are under the wraps.

Its right side is fitted with a volume rocker and a power key. The absence of a physical fingerprint scanner suggests that it could be equipped with an AMOLED display with an in-screen fingerprint scanner. Hopefully, newer reports that may appear before the launch date will reveal more details on its display and other specs.

Apart from the Honor X30, the Chinese manufacturer is also working on the Honor 60 SE. This device is expected to arrive with support for 40W fast charging. The case renders of the phone that appeared last week revealed that it will be equipped with a punch-hole display, a triple camera unit, and it will lack a 3.5mm audio jack.

vivo X series helps company see tremendous growth in entry-premium smartphone segment

As Chinese smartphone OEMs have now more or less completely dominated the budget segment, the mid to high-end segment is increasingly becoming more important. Not only is the range just another bit waiting to be conquered, but higher-value phones are also more profitable.

The true champ in the entry-premium, however, has been vivo which has made quite the progress in China’s mid to high-end segment (via Counterpoint Research). The company’s market share in the $500-$599 range (at wholesale price) has risen from 10% to 20% in just a year from September 2020 to September 2021. The price band used to be dominated by Huawei.

Image: Counterpoint Research

Much of this was driven by none other than vivo’s flagship X70 Pro offering, and of course, the company’s strides in innovation in camera tech. vivo recently also partnered with optical technology leader ZEISS.

The vivo X series wasn’t always a solely premium offering though. It earlier had blurring boundaries – something that was addressed with the launch of the S series in April 2021, effectively freeing it from the $470 and below segment.

vivo X70 featured

Moving on to China’s smartphone market itself, Counterpoint Research expects it to see flattish growth this year, with a lot of it having to do with the semiconductor shortage. The slow market size growth rate is leading OEMs to move into the game of revenue and average selling price (ASP).

The research firm further says that Chinese OEMs are no longer pleased to be crowned as the “king of affordable” and are hungry to grab more of the $470 and above segment. The price bracket is increasingly becoming a strategic territory for all Chinese OEMs and competition in it is expected to rise next year.

OnePlus Nord 2 update brings missing November security patch to European and American devices

The Chinese smartphone manufacturer OnePlus, released the latest update to their OxygenOS for their midrange OnePlus Nord 2 device. The update brings a couple of changes to the device with a major feature that has been missing from the European and North American versions of the handset.

OnePlus Nord 2 5G featured

Last month, OnePlus released the November update for the Nord 2 devices, including general bug fixes, performance optimization, and stability changes. But one notable difference between the Indian and other versions was that the Indian update included the November security patch, while the European and North American variants got the October security patch. It is still unclear why this disparity happened, but OnePlus might be correcting it with this update.

OnePlus Nord 2 December update

The latest A.14 update to the OxygenOS for the OnePlus Nord 2 5G arrived on December 7th, and a changelog for the update was posted on the official OnePlus forum. It features system optimization and stability changes for all three variants, namely, Indian, European, and North American. In addition to that, the European and North American OnePlus Nord 2 devices finally received the November security patch.

The thin changelog might even indicate another update in the works that brings the December security patch to all variants of the device.

If you have not received this OTA update yet, you can check its availability by heading to Settings > System > System updates on your device. Additionally, Indian customers interested in buying a new OnePlus device can take advantage of the massive discounts being offered on Amazon and OnePlus India’s website right now.

The Galaxy A53 will be slightly different than Galaxy A52, Galaxy A52 5G, and Galaxy A52s 5G in terms of design. Most importantly, it will lack a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The handset is reported to arrive in a single 5G variant. It could be powered by a yet-to-be-announced Exynos SoC with AMD mRDNA GPU.

OnePlus 9RT and OnePlus Buds Z2 India launch imminent, support pages spotted

The India launch of the much-awaited OnePlus 9RT and OnePlus Buds Z2 is now closer than ever as the products have now gained official support pages on the OnePlus website for the country. The former was spotted under the ‘Phone’ section while the latter was seen under ‘Accessories’, tipster Mukul Sharma told 91mobiles.

Clicking on both, however, leads to a page saying that “The page is coming soon.” The OnePlus Buds Z2 do pop up on Google though with the tagline “Play with silence”.

The OnePlus 9RT was previously expected to be launched in November but the date has been pushed further due to an unknown reason. The phone is a successor to the OnePlus 9R launched earlier this year and brings along a number of meaningful upgrades. In China, it was already released on October 19th. Some rumors suggest that it could be rebranded as the OnePlus RT in India.

As for specs, the OnePLus 9RT is powered by the Snapdragon 888 chipset paired with up to 12GB of RAM and 256GB internal storage. Its display is sized 6.62-inches and is an E4 OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, 1300nits peak brightness, HDR10+ support, and 600Hz touch response. The OnePlus Buds Z2 come with an upgraded design that has done away with plastic tips in favor of in-ear silicone ones for a more comfy fit. The earbuds feature 11mm drivers and support AAC and SBC Bluetooth codecs. But perhaps the best bit is the all-new ANC support with claims of reducing noise by up to 40dB. The battery life is claimed to be 7 hours without the case.

OPPO Find N foldable phone live images leaked, company also drops new teaser video

OPPO just announced that its first foldable phone called the OPPO Find N will be released on December 15th and the company has now begun teasing the device bit by bit. The latest teaser comes in the form of a video showing the entire front of the device.

The video seems to show that the phone has little to no crease at all along the line where it folds. It’s just a render but if the device indeed looks so in real life, it will be pushing ahead of Samsung’s foldable display tech which always has a crease in the middle – an annoyance that takes time getting used to.

But the official video pales in comparison to a newer leak (via Abhishek Yadav) showing perhaps the very first live images of the device ever. Both the front and rear of the device have been exposed. The rear view shows a triple camera array with a flash and a back panel with a matte finish.

The front, on the other hand, not only exposes most of the phone’s display with its left-aligned punch-hole but also reveals several key specs of the device along with its price.

The device is powered by the Snapdragon 888 processor and has a 4500mAh battery with support for 33W wired and 15W wireless charging. Its rear camera module comprises a Sony IMX766 50MP sensor that is joined by 16MP and 13MP sensors. Upfront, there’s a 32MP selfie shooter.

The OPPO Find N has an LTPO 120Hz main display while the external one has a refresh rate of 60Hz. For haptics, a top-of-the-line X-axis linear motor has been used.

The price of the foldable phone for the 8GB+256GB variant stands at ¥12999 (~$2,040) while the 12GB+256GB one costs ¥13999 (~$2,197).

Google will bring Android games to Windows 10 and 11 next year

Google plans to bring Android games to the Windows OS next year through a special version of the Google Play Games app. The app will be built for Windows and will allow games from Google Play to run on Windows laptops, tablets, and PCs.

Greg Hartrell, Google’s product director of games on Android and Google Play, revealed that the implementation will allow seamless switching between phones, tablets, Chromebooks, and Windows PCs, allowing your favorite titles from Android to run on more devices than ever before. Games can be resumed on another device after playing on one.

google play games featured

Google spokesperson Alex Garcia-Kummert told The Verge that the company has built the app entirely on its own, without a partnership with Microsoft, BlueStacks, or others. It’s unclear what technology is being used to emulate Android apps on Windows. All we know is that games will run locally instead of streaming from the cloud.

The Google Play Games app will also be distributed by Google itself and will support Windows 10 and up, with no special integration with the OS. Microsoft’s Android apps virtualization only supports Windows 11, so it’s great to see now that older Windows 10 machines will also be at least able to run games from Android. Google does not seem to be interested in running standard Android apps on Windows though.

For now, Google has only teased the app during The Game Awards held yesterday and has promised a release sometime in 2022.
