Xiaomi India has announced a “Black Friday Sale” bringing along attractive offers nearly across its entire portfolio. The sale will be going live on Mi.com, Flipkart, Amazon, Mi Home, and all offline partners. It commenced on November 25th and will last until November 30th.

Vivo announced its first smartwatch aptly named Vivo Watch in September last year. The watch is about to get a successor – the Vivo Watch 2. Before now, the Watch2 had appeared on certification websites and in leaks. A leaked picture showing three renders of the second-generation Vivo smartwatch has now appeared online pointing at an imminent launch.

The renders not only give us an idea of the design, but they also show some of the features expected onboard the smartwatch. Some of the notable features include heart rate monitoring, in-built GPS, and a step counter. The renders also show the device will come with support for voice calls. This aligns with previous rumors that tip the wearable device to come with e-SIM support.

In terms of the design, the Vivo Watch 2 will adopt the same circular design as the predecessor. The watch also comes with the options of leather and silicone straps. The watch is also said to come with a 501mAh battery which is twice the size of the first-gen Vivo Watch. This means it will have better endurance.

There is no word yet on the launch. We expect other details to emerge as time goes on.

Niantic & Fold launch new AR game that lets you grab Bitcoins instead of Pokémon

Niantic has collaborated with financial company Fold to create an augmented reality game called Fold AR. The game allows users to earn bitcoin and in-app benefits by exploring their physical surroundings. It is currently undergoing testing and the Fold AR team will allow a small fraction of users to test the game for a limited time daily.

Pokémon Go is an obvious inspiration for the game, but Fold’s press release has gone a step further by calling it a part of the metaverse. The difference between the two games lies in the prize – while Pokémon Go revolves around capturing cute monsters, Fold AR is based mostly on finding cubes and tapping them to reveal a prize.

And it’s the prizes bit that makes the game special, as some of them are in the form of Bitcoin in the denomination of Satoshis. Satoshis is currently a very small unit worth 1/20th of a penny. The reward also contains power-ups for the Fold app.

There’s another difference, however, concerning the world it’s set in. Fold AR doesn’t virtual locations that correspond to real-world places. Instead, the game spawns a block between 1 and 50 feet away from the player every 10 minutes, corresponding to the rate of real Bitcoin mining.

The Fold AR team hopes to add more features with time, even including one that lets players hide Bitcoins for friends to find as well as some form of NFT.

Fold CEO Will Reeves says that the goal of the game is to partly make a virtual currency feel real by creating an AR setting for it. The game is full of cryptocurrency-related memes and other related stuff, but it’s still supposed to appeal to both crypto-enthusiasts as well as regular players.

An official from Lenovo has just revealed earlier today (26th November 2021) that the company’s laptops with Intel’s latest 12th generation of Core processors are on the way and will be launching next year.

The news arrives from a Weibo post (a Chinese microblogging website) shared by Lin Lin, the marketing director of consumer notebook products in China. According to the Chinese consumer electronic maker’s executive, the brand is set to launch new notebooks with 12th gen Intel Core processors in 2022. He added that this was possible as the supply chain has finally improved significantly in recent times. Although, he did stated that the supply of certain notebook models will still be limited.

In other words, we do not know which exact models won’t suffer from a shortage in components. However, we can expect a number of PCs from its gaming laptops and lightweight laptops hitting the shelves with Team Blue’s latest 12th Gen Core processors. Recently, the company had launched a new YOGA Duet 2021 2 in 1 Windows 11 laptop, which had been out of stock for a long time. So, it appears that the supply chain is indeed improving.

Unfortunately, the senior official refrained from revealing any other details regarding these upcoming laptops. So we have no way of knowing which specs and features they might ship with. So stay tuned for more, as we will be providing updates if the company teases the new laptops or any official announcements are shared.

Apple fined $11 million in Italy for allegedly using user data commercially without consent

Apple and Google were both fined 10 million Euros ($11 million) today by Italy’s Competition Authority for allegedly using user data for commercial purposes without their consent – a violation of Italy’s Consumer Code.

The authority claims that Apple directly exploits the economic value of user data it collects to “increase the sale of its products and/or those of third parties through its commercial platforms (App Store, iTunes Store, and Apple Books).”

Also claimed was that neither Apple nor Google provide users with proper information about their data being used for commercial purposes. The read of the fine even claims that Apple does not provide a way to opt-out of the use of their data (via MacRumors).

The readout of the fine adds that Apple only tells its users that data would be used to improve their experiences, not that it will be used commercially. This is true in the sense that a prompt is shown when using the App Store saying that Apple may use some of the user data to “enable features, secure our services, or personalize your experience.”

But while the authority has correctly outlined Apple’s lack of acknowledgment for data being used for commercial purposes, it fails to provide proper examples of Apple partaking in such activities.

Apple’s privacy policy states that the company will only use personal data to power its services, comply with local laws, prevent fraud, and for communication objectives. Personal data may only be for other purposes with user consent.

Earlier this week, NIO had announced that it has signed a strategic cooperation deal with Shell. With the new partnership, two companies will work together in the field of electric vehicle energy.

According to a PanDaily report, the Chinese EV making startup and Shell will jointly build and operate charging and battery swap stations across the globe. Furthermore, the companies plan to make around 100 battery swap facilities as well in China by the year 2025. Similarly, the cooperation will have both firms operate pilot stations next year in Europe. Through this deal, the charging station from Shell in Europe will also be available to NIO EV customers, as per the press release.

Apart from just collaborating for these new battery swap stations, the carmaker and the world’s largest gasoline retailer will also work together in other fields like battery asset management, fleet management, membership systems, home charging services, advanced battery charging and swap technology development. In China, the companies will even look to build new charging facilities as well.

As of right now, the America based oil giant is placing its focus on new energy power. It plans to have these new energy power also be a part of its leading fuel services. István Kapitány, Global Executive Vice President of Shell Mobility, “Decarbonization is a common global challenge, one which requires extensive and multi-faceted global solutions. This cooperation means that we’ll offer Shell Recharge high-speed charging at NIO locations and make battery swapping available at convenient Shell locations while also offering NIO customers our best home and business charging solutions.”

The South Korean publisher behind the popular battle royale title has announced earlier today (26th November 2021) that it has partnered with Sony Music India to bring a new “Bad Boy x Bad Girl” from Indian artist Badshah into the game. Furthermore, this collaboration has also kicked off a new dance challenge, with Krafton also announcing a new PUBG New State based Web Series that is titled New State Chronicles, which aims to expand the game’s presence in the region.

Notably, the song from Badshah, which also features playback singer Nikhita Gandhi, will be used in sponsored content like streams and promotional videos. Similarly, Krafton is also bringing in popular Indian rapper Raftaar to introduce an exclusive song for PUBG: New State. The Vietnam smartphone market saw a massive 28% YoY drop in shipments in Q3 2021, mostly due to COVID-19-induced restrictions in major cities, which triggered labor shortages and closure of shops and malls. And on top of that, the ongoing global semiconductor shortage further resulted in limited volumes.

However, the market did perform well on a monthly level during July, but this saw a decline the very next month itself owing to the highest-ever spike in COVID cases.

Moving on to the brands themselves, Samsung performed extraordinarily well, reaching its highest ever share of 49% in Q3 2021. Most of its demand stemmed from budget offerings like the Galaxy A12, Galaxy A03s, and Galaxy A22 (via Counterpoint Research).

OPPO bagged the second spot with a 19% share, driven mostly by its A series. Xiaomi and vivo took the third and fourth spots with 13% and 8% shares respectively. For Xiaomi, its Redmi series was the driving force for its sales while the Y series did well for vivo.

Out of the total shipments, the online channel made up 13% during the same time period. Xiaomi led online sales with a share of 36% with Samsung closely following at 33%. This channel wasn’t spared by logistical issues either. To boost sales, OEMs partnered with online platforms to offer exclusive deals. Samsung, for example, partnered with Lazada for the fourth edition of LazMall Super Brand Day, where customers could avail savings at Samsung’s official store.

5G smartphones made up 20% of the total shipments in Q3 2021, and the figure is expected to rise further by 2021-end. 5G trials have already commenced in the country with Viettel becoming the first to do so. The carrier achieved a top speed of 4.7 Gbps during the trial. Auctions for the 5G spectrum are to start sometime in Q4 2021.

Regardless, manufacturing in Vietnam has been severely impacted by restrictions and lockdowns, affecting shipments of nearly every OEM. Most of the manufacturing facilities in Ho Chi Minh City during the restrictions were either closed or operating with limited manpower. As a result, some brands have even begun to look into setting up their factories elsewhere.

Still, smartphone shipments are expected to bounce back in Q4 2021 as restrictions are being lifted, workers have started returning to industrial towns, and vaccination rate is gaining momentum.

AK-47-maker fires into the EV market with two rugged-looking electric vehicles

The name Kalashnikov may not ring a bell to some but there is hardly anyone that doesn’t know the AK-47 assault rifle. The weapon was originally manufactured by Russian Mikhail Kalashnikov but there is a company named Kalashnikov Concept which is into weapons, unmanned vehicle and military robot manufacturing.

The Russian company is now eyeing the emerging electric vehicle industry as it has unveiled two of its patented EV designs. The company actually showcased its first EV prototype in 2018 with a design which is everything but beautiful. These new designs represent some improvements.

The EVs were filed at the Russian patent office recently and one of them is named UV-4 but there is a second, unnamed, never-before-seen three-wheeler. The UV-4 adopts a rugged-looking design with four wheels that are exposed. There is also a bodyshell as well as a military-grade doors. The entire car has a length of 133.8 inches and is 59 inch wide while the height is 70 inches.

With this design, we don’t expect the interior design to be flashy. The EV may come with features such as air conditioning, sound system and an adjustable suspension.

The UV-4 will get its power from a 67 hp single electric motor. The car has a top speed of 50 mph and has a maximum range of 93 miles.

The unnamed three-wheeler has an even smaller form factor. The front has the same design as the UV-4 but there are no doors.

In terms of the availability and pricing, Kalashnikov is yet to disclose when the EVs will be available or their prices.
