Mini LED demand spike causes LED Chip prices to surge: Report

With various companies gearing up to launch their own offerings of laptops, tablets, monitors, and TVs with the new Mini LED backlighting, suppliers have been pushing production capacities to meet the surge in demand. However, this has also led to the rise in the price of conventional LED chips as well.

Mini LED

According to a TrendForce report (Via EETAsia), multiple firms in the LED supply chains had started manufacturing LED chips ahead of time, in the fourth quarter of last year. But despite this, the explosive growth in demand for Mini LED chips has led to crowding in their production capacities that have also affected other mainstream LED chips. Due to this, the global supply chain has been witnessing a shortage of LED chips, which has led to certain suppliers raising the quotes on chips supplied to their non core clients that bring relatively low gross margins.

These price hikes are generally around 5 to 10 percent. Furthermore, the report adds that the companies in the LED supply chain have also begun aggressively procuring components in other to mitigate these upcoming price hikes on raw materials and the shortage of components. This is primarily due to tight production capacities for manufacturers after the Chinese New Year. These shortages have already affected certain serial numbers or specifications. Mini LED

TrendForce believes that the structural shortage that is affecting the LED industry is primarily due to the market’s underestimation of production capacity that was necessary for key parts of the supply chain. Thus, suppliers are currently enjoying an increased bargaining power in price negotiations of LED chips due to the rise in material costs and limited material supplies as well.

Redmi 7 is receiving MIUI 12 update despite getting canceled

In early December, news broke out that Xiaomi has canceled the MIUI 12 update for four devices, namely Redmi Y3, Redmi 7, Redmi 6, and Redmi 6A. But now, over a month later, one of these smartphones, the Redmi 7, has started receiving the MIUI 12 update.

Out of nowhere, Xiaomi has rolled out MIUI 12 update for the Redmi 7 though it was said to be canceled. As of now, the update is only live for the Chinese variant of the handset with build number V12.0.1.0.QFLCNXM.

The build is currently in the Stable Beta phase and hence, it is only available for select users in China. If the early adopters don’t come across any major bugs, this very same build will be seeded out as the final stable update for all the users in the country. Also, the update should be available for other regional variants of this phone shortly.

For those unaware, Xiaomi canceled the MIUI 12  update for Redmi 7 and the other three devices citing performance issues. Having used this handset personally, I can tell for sure that despite featuring a Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 SoC, the Redmi 7 stutters a lot. Anyway, I am happy that Xiaomi is providing the MIUI 12 update as it brings redesigned UI and new useful features.

Having said that, the biggest question is will the other three smartphones (Redmi Y3, Redmi 6, Redmi 6A) also get the update? Unfortunately, we don’t have any idea but it would be nice for the users of these handsets.

Apple to cross $100 billion in sales in Q4 2020: Report

Wall Street analysts are expecting Apple to reach sales crossing 100 billion US Dollars for the final quarter of 2020. This marks the holiday season along with the company’s launch of its latest iPhone 12 series lineup.

Apple

According to a BusinessInsider report, the current estimation for the Cupertino based giant’s final quarter sales is 102.76 billion US Dollars. This is for the quarter that ends on 31st December 2020, which is also the company’s fiscal first quarter, as per estimates from 27 analysts. At the moment, the highest estimate as per these analysts has the company reach 110.21 billion US Dollars in sale during the fourth quarter of last year.

As per Morgan Stanley analysts Katy L. Huberty and Erik W. Woodring’s research note, “We are buyers ahead of what we expect to be a record December quarter print.” If the mean estimation of the 102.76 billion US Dollars sales for Apple is true, it would mark a year on year rise of 16 percent over its final quarter sales from back in 2019. The company is scheduled to post the results of this quarter on Wednesday (27th January 2021) after the market closes.

Apple

Similar to Apple, even Amazon is expected to top the 100 billion US Dollars sales mark during this period. Although, its financial report for this quarter would only be seen by 2nd February 2021. Both Apple and Amazon would be a part of a small group of American firms that also includes Walmart, which also hit the 100 billion US Dollar milestone as well. Morningstar analysts also added that “CEO Tim Cook expects iPhone revenue to grow in the December quarter despite the new iPhone 12 being launched a couple of weeks later in the quarter, though he did not specify the magnitude of growth. Meanwhile, all other products and services are expected to grow in the double digits.”

Automotive display shipments rise by 22% in 2020

Displays used in automobiles have seen a surge in shipments in 2020. Last year, the automobile industry saw an increase in demand for displays that grew by 22 percent year on year.

Automotive

According to TheElec report, new market research from Omdia has pointed out that up to 351 million units of automotive displays that were sized 9 inch or above were shipped during this period. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the demand had shrunk in the first half but recovered in the second half of the year. This growth in display demand was primarily carried by the center stack display (CDS), which is generally the control hub in a vehicle.

Back in 2020, the CSD shipments rose by 47 percent alone in comparison to 2019. Furthermore, this category also accounted for around 40 percent of the automotive display market in 2019 but has since risen to over 50 percent in 2020. In the final quarter of last year, CSD alone accounted for 56.5 percent of all automotive displays. Similarly, ICD (instrument cluster display) was also responsible for the growth, which also saw a rise of 11 percent and accounted for about 30 percent of the automotive display demand.

Automotive

Furthermore, the report also found that only over 10 percent of all displays were automotive screens and that the increase in CSD and ICD shipments were thanks to the rise in autonomous driving and other safety features. Notably, 12.3 inch panels were the most popular size in this category of displays. The market research also predicts that the automotive display market will further recover in the second half of 2021.

Xiaomi’s new phone patent is a combination of slider, rollable, and full-screen designs

Xiaomi’s Mi MIX series is known for its bezel-less design. Unfortunately, the company has not released a new model in a very long time. However, it has patented a wide variety of devices with full-screen design in the past few months. Now, yet another new design emerges with a unique slider display implementation.

Xiaomi Slider Rollable Full Screen Smartphone Design Patent 05

As usual, this Xiaomi patent was first spotted by LetsGoDigtial. As per the publication, Beijing Xiaomi Mobile Software filed this patent with the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) and the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office). It got approved and published on October 29, 2020.

According to the documentation, this design includes a slider display similar to the Mi MIX 3 5G. But unlike that phone, this handset’s display covers the front and runs along the bottom side up until half of its back.

Hence, the only places without a screen on this design are the top, sides, and the top portion of the rear panel. This design is somewhat similar to the Xiaomi AI Super Camera smartphone patent from last year but with a magnetic slider.

Since this design’s display continues from the front to the back from the bottom side, it uses a roller mechanism inside the slider to slide down the front panel to reveal the selfie camera, an ambient light sensor, a distance sensor, a dot projector, and the receiver. This slider can also be moved by voice command.

In other words, this new Xiaomi patent is a combination of slider, rollable, and full-screen smartphone. That said, we don’t think the Chinese smartphone maker will ever release such a device for the commercial market but it may showcase it as a concept like the Mi MIX Alpha.

Lastly, the renders included in this article are created by an industrial designer called Sarang Sheth, in collaboration with LetsGoDigtial. Also, it is worth noting that the rear camera setup from the Mi 10T Pro is just for reference.

Ren Zhengfei, the Huawei Founder and CEO, has called for the company to decentralize its operations and focus more on generating and maintaining profits to survive the impacts of the US sanctions.

Huawei Logo MWC 2019

According to an SCMP report, the senior Huawei executive also called for the company to simplify its product lines, and maintain pay levels for the next three to five years to survive the US trade restrictions. The CEO and founder made the announcement in a published speech that was made public earlier this month. Ren had made the speech back in June 2020. For those unaware, the US sanctions have severely impacted the operations of the Chinese tech giant and had even led it to sell off its budget smartphone manufacturing unit, Honor.

Now, the company is doubling its efforts to expand its business in other areas, after its smartphone operations having been nearly crippled. At the moment, Huawei is working on growing its presence in areas like cloud computing/services and even smart cars. Ren stated that “There’s a big mismatch between our ability and strategy. It’s our weak link, and we are forced to start from the beginning like elementary school students.” He even referred to the Chinese proverb of “the cleverest housewife cannot cook a meal without rice”, adding that the company has neither “a clever wife” nor has its “own rice”.

The official also added that “Please don’t be upset because of the temporary US pressure, or give up on our globalization strategy. There’s no future without embracing globalization [in development and research].” Ren believes that Huawei must operate as normal and must also find ways to motivate people. He said that “hundreds of Huawei cadres” had even offered to go through a demotion, to showcase the dedication of the team.

Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo’s foldable smartphones are on schedule, will launch this year: Report

Earlier this month, a foldable Xiaomi smartphone was spotted running the MIUI 12. Since then, there are rumors that the company will be launching a new foldable device later this year. Now, a new report has suggested that other Chinese OEMs are also on schedule with their own foldable handsets that will launch this year as well.

Xiaomi

According to a known leakster @数码闲聊站, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo are gearing up for the launch of a new foldable smartphone later this year. The tipster revealed the information through a post on Weibo, a Chinese microblogging website, which states that all three Chinese tech giants will officially launch their new foldable handsets sometime in 2021. As mentioned above, a Xiaomi smartphone with a bendable screen was spotted inside a subway in China and seemed similar to Xiaomi’s VP showcased a few years back but this one has a bigger display.

This device is likely a prototype and uses a hinge mechanism similar to the  Galaxy Z Fold. The device is also shown as running MIUI 12 OS. While we know the design the Xiaomi prototype sports, it is currently unknown what design the Oppo or Vivo offerings feature. Although, it is rumored that Oppo’s foldable smartphone would also sport a similar hinge mechanism as the Xiaomi prototype.

Xiaomi foldable

Furthermore, the Weibo tipster also talks about Samsung and its overseas shipments of foldable displays. The South Korean company has apparently raised its shipments of foldable display, so there will also be a big wave of adoption of the firm’s seasoned flexible screen technology. So we can expect devices with a similar hinge mechanism from different Chinese OEMs. Unfortunately, this is still an unconfirmed report, so take it with a pinch of salt for now and stay tuned for more updates.

Redmi Note 10 series likely to come without a charger in the retail box

Samsung started experimenting with the exclusion of accessories from the retail box of its phones started with the Galaxy Note 20 last year as it didn’t offer earphones but shipped them for free to those who requested.

The strategy seems to be gaining more traction after Apple excluded the charger a few months back from all its iPhone devices. Xiaomi followed the suit with its Mi 11, but unlike Apple, it offers an option to customers to have a charger in the box.

Redmi Note10 No Charger Tease

Now, Xiaomi’s sub-brand is expected to do the same with the upcoming Redmi K40 series smartphones, if the newly released images are to be believed. It seems that another device from the company is also expected to remove the charger from the box — Redmi Note 10.

Lu Weibing, General Manager of the Redmi brand recently posted on Weibo, asking for suggestions for the upcoming Redmi Note 10 series smartphones. In the comments, some users suggested removing the charger from the box, and to one of those comments, Lu Weibing responded by saying “message received,” which indicates that the charger won’t be included in the retail box.

Smartphone manufacturers are justifying removing the charger from the box by citing the move as “environment friendly” and claiming that most users already have a charger at home. But they ignore the fact that the charger users might have at home won’t be compatible with the latest fast charging technology and to get the advantage of that feature, they will have to purchase a new one.

While the Weibo post may hint that the Redmi Note 10 lineup could be launched soon, we don’t expect the official launch at least for a couple of months as the company is currently gearing up to launch the Redmi K40 flagship smartphone by the end of next month, after the Spring Festival in China.

Windows 10X spotted running on a Nokia Lumia 950 XL

Back in the early days of smartphones, Android and iOS weren’t the only two platforms in the market. With the popularity of smartphones soaring, Microsoft had attempted to bring its Windows platform to mobiles as well, although it had failed to garner the same popularity and eventually died out. But now, a seemingly unlikely pairing has brought an upcoming version of Windows to an old Nokia Lumia handset.

Windows 10X

The Lumia 950 XL was launched back in 2015 and was a flagship grade device of its time. It arrives with premium hardware on the inside, which is probably what enabled developers to somehow find a way to run a new variant of Windows on it. According to a SlashGear report, developer Gustave Monce has just recently shared a series of short videos that depict the old Lumia device running the new Windows 10X operating system on Twitter.

For those unaware, Gustave is also the same developer that got Windows RT and Windows 10 running on the same device a couple of years prior. In the short video clips, the upcoming lite variant of the popular OS can be seen running almost perfectly on the Nokia Lumia 950 XL. This also means that this version of the OS is also built with touch integration and scalability to different screen sizes, and orientation as well. A slight latency in inputs can be observed, but that is likely due to the aging hardware.

However, it is still quite a sight seeing an old smartphone run a desktop grade software in a manner that almost seems usable. Notably, Monce has also provided images as a step by step process for those who want to replicate this process of bringing Windows 10X for your smartphones. Although, it is advisable not to attempt it on your daily driver or main handset.

Huawei has hired former President of Brazil as an advisor on 5G

Huawei has just hired a former president of Brazil to act as an advisor on 5G networking in the region. Through the new hiring, the company aims at ensuring the growth of the newer and faster bandwidth in the local market just prior to the auction for 5G wireless networks.

huawei

According to a ZDNet report, the 5G auction in Brazil was previously set to be held back in March 2020, but the Coronavirus outbreak pushed the date to sometime in early 2021. During this time, the Chinese tech giant, Huawei, faced a potential ban in the nation, which would prevent it from supplying 5G infrastructure in Brazil. However now, the company has brought in the help of a former President, which brings forth political influence in the region.

Huawei confirmed the appointment of Michel Temer, who is also a constitutional law professor and lawyer. This move signifies that the company is “committed to transparency with all stakeholders.” For those unaware, Temer was Dilma Rousseff’s Vice President until his impeachment in 2016, which led to the former becoming the new head of the state that remained in office till 2018. Notably, back in 2019, Temer was arrested as part of anti-corruption taskforce Operation Car Wash.

Huawei

Interestingly, Huawei’s involvement with the former President for legal advice over 5G in Brazil also brings other advantages for the firm as well. Temer also has ties with the current President Jair Bolsonaro, which is essentially an added bonus for the Chinese company. Similarly, the former leader was also responsible for the appointment of the current president of the board of Brazilian telecommunications agency Anatel.

Redmi K40 retail box image leaks online; may come without charger

It’s been a few weeks since Xiaomi launched its flagship Mi 11 smartphone, becoming the first device to come powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset. Now, it’s sub-brand Redmi is also gearing up to launch its flagship smartphone.

The upcoming Redmi K40 Pro will come powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset, as confirmed by the brand’s General Manager Lu Weibing. Now, ahead of the phone’s official launch, its retail box has leaked online.

Redmi K40 Retail Box Leak

The leaked image shows two different retail boxes but the only difference seems to be the size of the packaging — one is thicker while the other one is thinner. It is being speculated that the thinner retail box indicates the exclusion of a charger in the box.

It seems that Redmi is employing the same strategy that Xiaomi used for the Mi 11 smartphone. While the phone comes without a charger, there’s another variant that has a charger in the box and the pricing is the same for both of them.

The upcoming Redmi K40 series is expected to have at least two models — Redmi K40 and Redmi K40 Pro. The phones could feature an AMOLED display with a punch-hole cutout in the top-center for housing the front-facing camera. The screen is touted by the company to be the “most expensive” in the industry.

While the Pro variant will pack the SD888 SoC, the Redmi K40 is expected to come powered by the unannounced Snapdragon 775G chipset. As for the pricing, the Pro model has already been confirmed to start at 2,998 yuan, which is about $463. The devices are expected to get launched in February, after the Spring Festival.
