Apple and Netflix accused of avoiding tax responsibilities in Vietnam

The Vietnamese information minister has accused foreign streaming companies like Netflix and Apple of avoiding their tax responsibilities in the region that may create unfair competition for domestic firms, earlier this week.

Apple

According to the information and communications ministry, both Apple and Netflix have never paid tax in Vietnam, despite having a combined revenue of nearly 1 trillion dongs (roughly 43.15 million US Dollars) from over a million subscribers. Minister Nguyen Manh Hung stated that “Domestic companies have to abide by tax and content regulations while foreign firms do not, which is unfair competition.”

He further added that “Some content on Netflix has flouted regulations related to the history and sovereignty of the country, violence, drug use, and sex.” Back in 2018, Vietnam had adopted a new cybersecurity law, which required foreign companies to earn income from online activities to store their data within the country. However, Netflix said it had no plans of opening an office in the region or even having servers placed locally, as per a CNBC report.

Apple

A Netflix spokesperson responded that “We are supportive of the implementation of a mechanism that will make it possible for foreign service providers like Netflix to collect and remit taxes in Vietnam. However today such a mechanism does not exist.” Hung stated that the information ministry, finance ministry, and tax department are also working to facilitate tax collection by calculating the revenue of these major streaming firms since their entry into Vietnam.

For those wondering about standards, the power bank supports both USB Power Delivery (PD) and HUAWEI SuperCharge.

Apple will not launch new iPhone SE in first half of 2021: Ming-Chi Kuo

A new research report from Ming-Chi Kuo has revealed interesting details regarding the launch plans for Apple in 2021. The report states that the Cupertino based giant will not launch a new iPhone SE in the first half of 2021, while the increased competition within its supply chain might cause a shift in standing among the suppliers.

The report from the known analyst also adds that the market is underestimating the impact of increased competition on Taiwan’s Genius Electronic Optical (GSEO). Furthermore, it is stated that the main reason for the GSEO’s revenue in October being lower than expectations was due to increased competition between Largan and Semco.

Apple iPhone SE (2020)
Apple iPhone SE (2020)

As first reported by ITHome, while the market had expected a new iPhone SE model launching in the first half of 2021, Kuo’s report suggests that this might not be the case. The report also talks about increased competition within the supply chain of Apple. The primary reason for the delayed iPhone SE 2021 launch is still unknown. Although, the report states that the market is overestimating the ultra wide angle lens orders GSEO might have received. In other words, GSEO is expected to have its orders fall from 50 percent of the iPhone 12 series to 30% of the iPhone 13 series.

Xiaomi Lumi launches high precision Human sensor with 6 year long standby

Earlier today (11th November 2020), Lumi launched the new Aqara high precision human sensor. The device is priced at 299 Yuan and the brand is a part of the Xiaomi Eco-Chain.

Huawei HarmonyOS powers the latest Midea smart home products

Earlier today (11th November 2020), Midea launched a series of new smart home products. These new IoT devices are powered by HarmonyOS, which is a proprietary operating system from the known smartphone maker Huawei.

The new products are a part of Midea’s smart and interactive home appliances. This includes water heaters, dishwashers, smart stoves, and many more. These devices are also interconnected, which means one can access their features and functions through a single smartphone for control. In other words, accessibility is a major focus of the new launches.

Huawei

Furthermore, it has also been stated that the new Midea products arrive with three major improvements. The first is the fast distribution network that allows one to quickly connect and configure the device with ease through its 3 second network distribution system that works with its WiFi aware network configuration protocol.

The second major improvement is bringing information from screenless devices to the screen. Meaning, one can view data from a smart home product that does not have a screen through their smartphones in real time. This helps users monitor and track the run time of the products, even helping with additional functions like reminders for consumable items that might be stored in a smart fridge.

Huawei

The third and final major improvement is the direct service one, which lets users get in touch directly with factory services through the push of a single button. This comes especially handy in regards to cleaning, servicing, repairing, and even in purchasing consumable items in certain cases as well. Back in the Huawei Developer Conference from September 2020, the Chinese tech giant had revealed that it would ship its custom built OS with third party devices, and it seems the new Midea launch is the first of many that will run on HarmonyOS.

Huawei Smart Speaker with touchscreen panel leaks online ahead of launch

Earlier this year, around April, a new smart screen device from Huawei was surfaced online which was believed to be a part of the company’s Smart Screen devices lineup. However, a new leak related to the same product confirms that it’s a smart speaker.

An upcoming Huawei Smart Speaker has been leaked online which also features a touchscreen panel. Being a smart speaker, the device is expected to support several functions, including support for smart home and audio-video playback.

The leaked images showcase that the device will come with a square-shaped body where the upper half is a touchscreen while the lower half features a mesh speaker. There’s also a circular knob and at the top, there’s a camera sensor.

Apart from the usual smart speaker functions, the upcoming Huawei Smart Speaker seems to come with support for smart home control and making video calls, thanks to the presence of the camera sensor.

Huawei has been trying to expand in the Internet of Things (IoT) category. The company already has a lineup of devices, including smartphones, tablets, laptops, TVs, and even car display units. With the launch of the Smart Speaker, the company seems to be looking to offer a full ecology of products for smart home features.

Vertu’s spiritual successor Xor to launch first phone in Q1 2021

Xor, the spiritual successor of Vertu, is planning on launching its first phone in the first quarter of 2021. The brand aims at reviving Vertu’s heritage and is being run by a group of former employees.

For those unaware, Vertu was a luxury brand that made hand made phones and smartphones. These devices were quite expensive but featured a unique design. Unfortunately, a sudden drop in consumer interest had the company go under and it final launch was the Aster P Android smartphone, which was exclusively launched in China.

Vertu

According to a GSMArena report, the brand is pronounced “eggsor,” and is co founded by Hutch Hutchison, who was also the former design chief at Vertu. Hutchison is also joined by several of his ex-Vertu colleagues. Notably, a part of the brand was financed by former Vertu customers that have desired the revitalization of the brand, so they can buy the ultra premium phones.

The company will be launching the Xor Titanium, which is a candybar phone that has been hand built in England. It arrives with an impressive price tag of 3,000 Pounds (roughly 3,973 US Dollars). As the name suggests, the device sports a titanium casing with leather on the rear and a classic T9 keypad on the front. The Xor phone runs on the custom built Linux based software.

Vertu

Its battery can last for up to 5 days on a single charge and the device boasts modern features like active noise cancellation during calls and wireless charging as well. The company is also advertising the device’ssecurity as a feature, sporting end to end AES256 encryption that works on a hardware level. A remote secret key also immediately deletes all stored data if the Xor Titanium is lost, adding another last report measure of data security.

Nokia 6300 4G spotted in a new 3D concept render video

Nokia had once been the leading mobile phone maker in the world. Its popularity was carried by its strong feature phone portfolio that is still being sold to this date. Now, a new report suggests that the classic Nokia 6300 will launch soon in a new refreshed 2020 variant with 4G support.

Nokia

Previously, a report from WinFuture had stated that China’s HMD Global is planning on launching two new mobile phones soon, namely the Nokia 6300 and 8000. Both smartphones are basic feature phones that are a refresh of the iconic handsets from almost 15 years ago. The Nokia 6300 was first launched in 2006 and featured a candy bar design, which had it meet with high demand. Its dual tone design with stainless housing made it feel premium, while its two LED lights on the sides made it seem unique as well.

The device ran on Symbian S40 OS and featured a 2 inch display with a 2 megapixel camera on the rear. For memory, it sported 7.8MB of RAM and 2 GB of internal storage. Although the report did suggest an upcoming launch, there were no images of the new refresh available. But now, a LetsGoDigital report had found that a 3D concept render design by Concept Creator has offered us a first look at what the Nokia 6300 4G might look like.

A notable inclusion in the new device is the networking upgrade from 2G from over a decade ago to 4G LTE support. In other words, the 2020 variant will be able to take advantage of the newer and faster bandwidth. We can expect the 6300 4G to arrive soon, with an announcement likely to arrive sometime within the next few weeks. So stay tuned for more updates and also check out our previous report on the specs of the Nokia 6300 4G.

Chinese shoppers spent over $56 billion in 10 days leading up to Singles’ Day sales

One of the world’s biggest online shopping bonanza, which is held in China on 11th November every year, called Double 11 or Singles’ Day sale, kicked off today at midnight in China and impressive sales numbers are now being revealed.

As per the report coming from SCMP, Alibaba Group Holding managed to sell products worth 372.3 billion yuan or $56.3 billion in the 10 days leading up to the main event. So far, it has generated sales worth $38.4 billion today, i.e. 11th November.

Alibaba Double 11 Sale 2020

Do note that the numbers mentioned above are just for the sales generated through the platform owned by Alibaba. The reason behind such massive numbers is that the sales started early this year, from 1st November. Also, many shoppers are now preferring to make their purchases online because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The report also mentions that Alibaba is claiming this year’s Singles’ Day to cover over two million new products on the platform — twice the number compared to last year. The company is also claiming that transactions per second peaked at 583,000 this year.

Alibaba also says that within 111 minutes of sales kicking off on 1st November, around 100 brands managed to sell products worth 100 million yuan. On the other hand, JD.com claims that its sales on 1st November were 90 percent higher compared to last year. The company’s transaction volume also reached 200 billion yuan and that is just through the first 10 minutes on 11th November.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, e-commerce transactions have increased in China. As per the report from the Ministry of Commerce, China’s online retail sales reached 5.15 trillion yuan in the first half of the year, representing a rise of 7.3 percent compared to the same period last year.

Sony PlayStation 5 is selling at three times its retail price in China due to supply shortage

The anticipation for the Sony PlayStation 5 is at all time high with its launch arriving in just 2 days. However, prior to its release, pre orders for the next generation of video game console have already surfaced online at three times its official retail price by scalpers.

PlayStation 5

For those unaware, the PS5 starts sale on 12th November 2020 in multiple markets, including North America, Japan, and more. But unfortunately for the Chinese market, the launch might be delayed by a bit, owing to the tightly regulated gaming market in the country. Now, it seems that a few individuals are taking advantage of this situation and have started taking pre orders on major e-retailing website JD.com, as per a SouthChinaMorningPost report.

The Sony PlayStation 5 carries an official price tag of 500 US Dollars. However, these online pre orders have listed the price three times higher, as high as 12,888 Yuan (roughly 1,950 US Dollars). This is quite a steep mark up, which has already surface even prior to the console’s global launch. The reason for the premium charge is not limited to just a delayed sales, rather, it is more related to the supply of the PS5.

PlayStation 5 price

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, there has been a supply shortage in various industries and companies like AMD (Ryzen 5000 series CPUs), Nvidia (RTX 3000 series GPUs), and even Sony are suffering the brunt of it right when their next gen hardware is being launched. Meaning, every new launch is being hoarded by scalpers that resell it at a premium. Piers Harding-Rolls, research director of games at Ampere Analysis stated that “We expect demand for the new consoles to outstrip supply up until at least the end of March 2021.”

Apple to reportedly discontinue iPad Mini once it launches foldable iPhone

At a time when leading smartphone companies like Samsung and Huawei are in the second-generation of their foldable phones, Apple is still working on its foldable iPhone. The Cupertino-based giant is quite behind others in terms of technology for smartphones given that it has just launched its 5G compatible devices while others have launched several.

However, the company is making steady progress related to the foldable iPhone, which has been leaked a few times in the past. Now, a new report suggests that when Apple launches its foldable iPhone, it will discontinue the iPad Mini model.

Foldable iPhone Prototype

EDITOR’S PICK: Qualcomm reportedly gets license to supply chips to Huawei, P50 series could use Snapdragon chips

The reason behind this is that it is believed that the upcoming foldable iPhone will be a cross between the iPhone and iPad Mini and will be running the iPadOS. When unfolded, the device will have a display similar to the iPad Mini.

If the previous reports are to be believed, then the foldable iPhone is designed in such a way that when opened, it has a single continuous display and doesn’t appear to have two separate display panels, even though that is the case.

As for the pricing, the device is expected to come with at least 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage, for a starting price of $1,499. However, we would advise you to take this information with a pinch of salt. Also, the launch date for this foldable iPhone is expected to be somewhere around November 2022, so there’s still a lot of time.

Xiaomi Mi Box 4S Pro goes on sale in China for 399 yuan ($60)

Xiaomi Mi Box 4S Pro

EDITOR’S PICK: Qualcomm reportedly gets license to supply chips to Huawei, P50 series could use Snapdragon chips

The newly launched Mi Box 4S Pro comes with support for 8K video decoding, which is an upgrade compared to support for 4K decoding in the previous model. Apart from that, the HDMI interface has also been upgraded to HDMI 2.1.

Despite several upgrades on the device, its design remains the same as the Mi Box 4S. Internally, the storage capacity has now been increased from 8GB to 16GB, allowing users to store more data. This newly announced device also comes with support for DTS and Dolby Audio for an immersive sound experience.

It is expected to be powered by a 64-bit quad-core Amlogic S905X chipset with four ARM Cortex-A53 cores and Mali 450 GPU, coupled with 2GB of RAM. Qualcomm licensed to supply chips to Huawei, P50 series could use Snapdragon chips: Report

It was reported in September that due to the revised US ban, Taiwan-based TSMC could not cooperate with Huawei. Hence, TSMC was unable to produce Kirin 9000 and other Kirin chipsets for the Chinese company. It was recently reported that Qualcomm has confirmed applying for a license to supply chipsets to Huawei. A fresh report by China’s 36k.com publication (via MyDrivers) has claimed that Qualcomm has been granted permission.

Huawei is known for using the homegrown Kirin chipsets to power its smartphones. The Chinese firm did not manufacture the chipsets, but it only designs semiconductors through its HiSilicon division. The actual manufacturing is carried out by TSMC. Since TSMC make use of US-made equipment for manufacturing those chipsets, it was stopped from doing business with Huawei. Hence, in August, Huawei Consumer Business CEO, Yu Richard claimed that the Mate 40 series could be the last Kirin SoC powered phones from the brand.

Huawei

Recent reports have revealed that companies like Intel, AMD, Samsung Display, Sony, and others have been granted permission by the U.S. government to continue business with Huawei. Hence, there can be a possibility that TSMC may resume making chips for Huawei. Meanwhile, it appears that Qualcomm will supply chips to the Chinese firm.

According to the Chinese publication, a source close to Huawei has said that Qualcomm has already bagged a license to supply chips to Huawei. If TSMC is unable to do business with Huawei, its high-end lineup such as P-series and Mate-series could be fueled by flagship Snapdragon chipsets. There is a possibility that the Huawei P50 series arriving in Q1 could be driven by the Snapdragon 875 chipset.

There is a high demand for the recently announced Mate 40 series. However, it is mainly because of the limited availability of the Kirin 9000 chips, Huawei is reportedly unable to manufacture Mate 40 Pro and Mate 40 Pro Plus smartphones. Hence, there are speculations that the company may temporarily sell Snapdragon 875 powered Mate 40 models.

Apart from Snapdragon chips, Huawei is also expected to launch MediaTek powered phones in the absence of Kirin chips. It was reported last week that Huawei managed to secure a big stock of MediaTek’s Dimensity chipsets before September.
