Realme TV will feature MediaTek chip, 24W four speakers, Dolby Audio, and more

Realme is all set to launch its first-ever smart TV in India on May 25 along with Realme Watch. The brand has been teasing its features on official Realme Link Twitter account for a few days now. But thanks to a dedicated microsite on Flipkart, we are now aware of almost all the specifications of Realme TV.

Realme TV Specifications

Realme was supposed to unveil the Realme TV at MWC 2020 but unfortunately, that got cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Anyway, it will be now finally going official next week in India and maybe also in China as the brand has revealed to launch 8 new products on the same day as the Indian launch (May 25).

Anyway, talking about the specs mentioned on Flipkart, the Realme TV will feature a modern design with a bezel-less screen. The brand claims the panel to reach 400 nits of brightness with support for Chroma Boost Picture Engine. We believe it will be similar to Xiaomi’s Vivid Picture Engine on Mi TVs that boosts the color saturation of the content.

Further, it will be powered by a MediaTek chip unlike Amlogic on Xiaomi Mi TVs, Mi Boxes, and the upcoming Mi TV Stick. This chipset will include a 64-bit ARM Cortex-A53 CPU and Mali-470 MP3 GPU.

Also, the forthcoming Realme TV will come with 24W four stereo speakers with support for Dolby Audio. As usual, Realme also claims its first TV to have undergone quality tests such as -20℃ low-temperature test, 760mm drop test, 5,000 times remote button test, and 5,500 times power on/off test.

That said, the microsite does not reveal in what sizes the Realme TVs will be offered in. It also does not mention the software but that has been confirmed as Android TV by the brand on Twitter.

We expect Realme to reveal more features of its first smart TV since the product will only go official next week.

Ex-Meizu exec Li Nan: Chinese companies should take a gamble, Recalls Blue Charm Metal without Qualcomm & Google

Amidst news of Huawei ban extension, many Chinese industrialists have shared their opinions on social media like Weibo. One of them was Li Nan, the co-founder and former senior vice president of Meizu. He said companies should not depend on globalization and free trade to succeed instead they should be self-reliant to some extent for worst-case scenarios.

Meizu VP Li Nan
Li Nan, Co-Founder and Former Senior Vice President of Meizu

Huawei’s ban was extended for another year last week by the US government. The White House is also moving ahead to cut the chip supplies to the Chinese telecom giant. In response, China is readying its own ‘Unreliable Entity List’ targeting American companies like Apple and Qualcomm.

To this, Li Nan recalled Meizu’s Blue Charm Metal smartphone, which did not feature any US-made technology. This device was powered by MediaTek X10 SoC and ran YunOS (based on AOSP) developed by the Alibaba Group. This handset was a successful product selling millions of units.

He also added that Meizu has been using Qualcomm chipsets merely for the last 3 years. He cited the company’s growth rate was much better when it didn’t use them. Further, Mr Nan said that it is time to gamble again to be self-reliant since we never know when anti-globalization and anti-free trade will creep in.

The Chinese government is yet to officially announce its move against the US. When it does, we expect the trade war to become more extreme than ever affecting a large number of companies.

MediaTek announces Dimensity 820 chipset for affordable 5G devices

MediaTek has just revealed its new processor earlier today (18th May 2020). The Dimensity 820 SoC is the latest entry in the company’s Dimensity 800 series, which was announced back at CES. The new processor feature 5G support and will be housed in smartphones that will launch later this year.

Smartphones with 5G networking have become more common in recent times. When they had originally launched, only the most expensive flagship models feature the newer and faster bandwidth. But with MediaTek announcing the new Dimensity 820 SoC, more 5G enabled handsets may soon arrive in lower and more affordable smartphone segments as well.

MediaTek

According to Dr. Yenchi Lee, Assistant General Manager of MediaTek’s Wireless Communications Business Unit, “Our Dimensity 1000 is already powering impressive flagship 5G devices in a number of markets. With the new Dimensity 820, we’re now making 5G much more accessible. The Dimensity 820 stands out beyond competitors by offering four high-performance Arm Cortex-A76 cores at 2.6GHz within its octa-core CPU, delivering superb performance and responsiveness, among its incredible AI, gaming and photography experiences.

Talking about the new processor’s capabilities, the Dimensity 820 supports MediaTek’s APU 3.0 that helps in providing more powerful camera features. Thanks to Imagiq 5.0, the processor’s ISP, smartphones that ship with this chip can house up to 4 cameras with sensors size as high as 80 megapixels. This chipset also supports Multiframe 4K video HDR and is optimized for gaming as well.

MediaTek Dimensity 800

In terms of networking, the Dimensity 820 supports global sub-6GHz 5G networks in Asia, North America, and Europe. According to MediaTek, the new chip also offers “higher average speeds and a seamless handover between two 5G connection areas for the most reliable connectivity on the go.” While the chipset seems quite impressive right now, we will have to wait for the launch to see how it actually stacks up against its primary competition, Qualcomm, and its Snapdragon 765G and 768G processors.

OPPO pushes for the European market aggressively after Vodafone deal

OPPO is apparently pushing more aggressively towards the European market, especially after a partnership with telecom giant Vodafone. This move is an expansion of the Chinese company’s presence in the region and may even hamper Huawei‘s performance as well.

After losing Google support and services, Huawei has had to launch its Android smartphones with its own services and app ecosystem, like AppGallery. However, many popular major apps like YouTube, Facebook, and more are missing, which is likely to be a major hindrance to its overseas users, especially in Europe. While this puts pressure on the Chinese tech giant, it also opens up opportunities for other players like OPPO to step up.

In a recent announcement, OPPO had revealed that it is partnering up with Vodafone to brings its smartphones to the European market. The deal begins later this month and will have OPPO aggressively launching and promoting its 5G enables handsets. These devices will likely arrive with the value for money philosophy the company practices and offer affordable 5G smartphones in the growing European 5G market.

oppo logo

The UK, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Romania, and Turkey are the first nations where OPPO is aiming at right now. Notably, Vodafone had pulled Huawei handsets from its UK 5G network last year after the company had been banned by the US. But now, the telecom operator has found another Chinese vendor to replace the growing demand for 5G smartphones. The partnership will have the companies jointly look into online sales aggressively, considering that physical stores are still closed under the coronavirus lockdown.

POCO India is crowdsourcing the name of its upcoming TWS earbuds

Earlier today (18th May 2020), the General Manager of POCO India, C Manmohan, shared a poll on his official Twitter handle. The poll was for the name of the company’s upcoming truly wireless earbuds and offered four options in total.

In the tweet, the senior official revealed that POCO India is gearing up for the launch of new TWS earbuds soon in the market and offered the fans a method to be more included in the process. The company is apparently crowdsourcing the name of the upcoming Bluetooth earbuds and the options are POCO Move Buds, POCO Klip Buds, POCO Pop Buds, and, lastly, the POCO Funkz.

These options clearly hint at the TWS nature of the upcoming earbuds and those interested in the poll can definitely participate in the naming of the device. The poll is currently live and will take in entries till the next 22 hours, or about 10 am (IST). Interestingly, a few users noted that an option to call it just the POCO Buds would also be appreciated. However, it is unknown if outside entries are also being considered.

POCO logo

The move from POCO signifies a new shift for smartphone OEMs that in recent years have been moving to include more products in their electronic ecosystem. This is something Apple has been doing for years and, now, more vendors are taking up the same philosophy. Unfortunately, we don’t really know a lot regarding the company’s upcoming TWS earbuds, so stay tuned for more details that should arrive soon.

ZTE Axon 11 SE will be the first 5G phone to support all four carriers in China, launches on June 1

ZTE, a well-known Chinse telecom giant has not been making many phones as it used to once after the US ban. However, the company is still in the phone business and is set to launch the first 5G smartphone with support for all the four carriers in China including China Broadcasting Network (CBN).

ZTE Axon 11 SE China Broadcasting Network CBN low-band 5G

The three major carriers of China – China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom launched 5G networks for the public on November 1, 2019. Whereas, China Broadcasting Network launched its 5G network two months later in January 2020. It is the county’s only carrier to offer low-band 5G operating in the 703-798MHz range. Additionally, it is also testing 4.9GHz high band 5G.

That being said, there’s still not a single smartphone in the market to support 5G networks of all the four carriers in China. But that’s going to change soon as ZTE has successfully tested 5G VoNR (Voice over New Radio) for voice and video calls on CBN’s low-band 5G network on the occasion of ‘World Telecommunication Day’ on May 17.

The smartphone in question is said to be ZTE Axon 11 SE, a new member in the Axon 11 series. It will be announced officially on June 1. Unfortunately, nothing else is known about this handset at this moment. Anyway, we expect the company to soon drop teasers for the phone revealing its features.

TSMC stops taking Huawei chip orders after new US restrictions

TSMC, which is the leading contract manufacturer for chipsets, has now stopped new orders from Chinese giant Huawei Technologies. The move comes after the United States tightened export controls, a move aimed at limiting Huawei’s access to chip supplies.

According to a person aware of the development, while TSMC has stopped taking new order from Huawei, the company will continue producing the chipsets that are already in production and for the orders that were taken before the new rule change and the shipments for the same should continue till Q3 2020.

Huawei Logo

Last week, The U.S. Commerce Department announced that the all the chip manufacturers using American chipmaking equipment, intellectual property or design software needs to apply for a license before shipping chips to Huawei. This is similar requirement that U.S. added when it put Huawei on the Entity List, effectively banning the company.

This is a major blow to Huawei, which is the world’s leading telecom maker and the second largest smartphone brand. The company heavily relies on TSMC for manufacturing its chipsets used in almost all of its smartphones, including the flagship premium devices. The Taiwanese company also produces its AI processor and networking chips.

In response to this, China’s Department of Commerce said that it strongly objects to the tighter U.S. export controls and added that such restrictions pose a huge threat to the global supply chain. It demanded U.S. to reverse the new restrictions and warned to take necessary countermeasures.

The new rule change is also a blow for TSMC in terms of revenue given that Huawei is the company’s second-largest client after Apple and accounts for around 15-20 percent on its annual revenue. Also, the announcement about the tighter restrictions came the same dat TSMC announced its plan to invest $12 billion for a new plan in Arizona.

But it seems that Huawei was anticipating such move by the United States. The company has reportedly been stockpiling more than a year’s worth of networking equipment-related chips which are crucial for its telecom equipment and carrier business.

Further, the company is also reportedly exploring other options and has asked European chipmaker STMicroelectronics to co-design chips. Huawei had recently announced shifting of its 14nm chipset orders from TSMC to SMIC and the Chinese manufacturer has also started mass-production of Kirin 710A.

The usage of this new technology is in addition with support for nine frequency bands in China. Honor‘s Vice President for Business Development says that the technology can optimise TDD/FDD spectrum frequency coordination, high frequency/low frequency complementation, time domain/frequency domain aggregation to further improve the network’s uplink capacity and reduce delay.

Honor X10 5G Lab Results

The new poster shared by the company also hints at the support for an advanced Night Mode shooting capability. Honor has already shared camera samples of the smartphone which were captured during recent Mount Everest expedition.

The smartphone will come with a triple camera setup on the back that includes a 40MP RYYB high-sensitivity primary camera, an 8MP ultra wide-angle and depth 2-1 sensor, and a 2MP macro sensor. The primary sensor is believed to be the same one used in P30 Pro.

Honor X10 Camera Setup

As per the reports, the Honor X10 features a 6.63-inch LCD display with a notch-less design, 2400 x 1080 pixels screen resolution and support for 90Hz refresh rate, offering 397 PPI pixel density.
