Specs of the chipset which is reported to be called the Kirin 820 5G have been leaked today by a leaker.

The info was posted on Weibo by Digital Chat Station. According to the leaker, the Kirin 820 will be a 7nm chipset with Cortex-A77 CPU cores and a Mali-G77 GPU. He also added that the chipset will have an upgraded ISP and NPU.

Kirin 820 5G specs

The info doesn’t reveal the CPU arrangement, so we do not know how many Cortex-A77 cores it has. However, it appears to be more powerful than the Snapdragon 765G whose Kryo 475 cores are based on the Cortex-A76. However, it should be able to take on the MediaTek Dimensity 1000L which also has Cortex-A77 cores and a Mali-G77 GPU.

The Kirin 820 5G chipset is expected to launch tomorrow based on a statement by Zhao Ming, the president of Honor. The top executive said on Weibo that there will be an announcement tomorrow which is the 8th anniversary of Vmall, Huawei (and Honor’s) online mall. The announcement will be for a “new product whose core has been redesigned”. This statement is implied to be a hint for the new chipset.

The Kirin 820 5G will appear first in the Honor 30S but expect more devices to follow shortly after it is launched.

Huawei launches an AI assisted Diagnostic service for faster Coronavirus detection

Amidst the Coronavirus Pandemic, Huawei has recently developed a new AI assisted quantitative medical image analysis service to improve Coronavirus infection diagnosis in collaboration with the Huazhong University of Science and Technology and Lanwon Technology.

Huawei
The fear of the Coronavirus outbreak has gripped the world, especially China

The launch of the new service could play a major role in improving the infrastructure which can accurately and quickly detect the viral infection. This could potentially help curb further infections and other complications in time. The National Health Commission of China has now officially included the diagnosis solutions offered through the service alongside its own prescribed treatment and detection solutions, which were published back in 4th February 2020.

Huawei Cloud utilizes artificial intelligence technology such as computer vision and medical image analysis to automatically detect the virus quickly and accurately. It even details the CT quantification and other results from the imaging to the clinical doctors at hand. The new service will bolster the fight against COVID-19 and could help relieve pressures and workloads from quarantines and the on duty doctors in the Hubei province.

Huawei

Notably, the new service also utilizes powerful computing capabilities through Huawei’s Ascend series of AI chipsets. These processors can also output CT quantization results in mere seconds, making them a lot more viable and efficient in comparison to traditional methods used by doctors. Conventional techniques involve manually drawing ROIs that need to be tested separately. Thus, the Huawei diagnostic solution could prove to be very useful in the weeks to come.

As previously mentioned, various OEMs are seeking to expand their IoT (Internet of Things) portfolio and grow their own electronic ecosystem. Realme is one of the fastest growing and a relatively young smartphone brand, which is already a popular name in various markets especially India. So it would come as no surprise if the Chinese company were to soon launch its own smartwatch in India first.

From what we know so far, the wearable has been confirmed in a recent launch conference, which also detailed a banking app software and other IoT products and smartphones. 5G will surge the adoption of AMOLED and high refresh rate displays on phones

5G mobile networks are relatively new but the increased spread and bandwidth bring untapped potential. As per a report by Digitimes, 5G will surge the demand for display technologies across various sectors.

5G Logo

The fifth-generation mobile technology, commonly known as 5G is capable of offering high-speed internet to the masses when it is commercialized across the world. Faster internet enables innovative applications like cloud gaming, even better media streaming, virtual reality, augmented reality, and others. Further, these functions require better screens to enjoy the content and therefore display industry is expected to flourish more in the coming years.

The four display trends that will boom on account of 5G are AMOLED panels, high-refresh-rate panels, large-size integrated automotive panels, and high-resolution panels for AR / VR. Smartphone OEMs have already started using AMOLED screens on most of their devices and it is expected to grow more. Around 40% of total smartphone shipments in 2020 is expected to use AMOLED panels due to their increased availability. Apart from Samsung and Apple, we will see devices from Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo to feature these panels in more numbers than before.

Although high-refresh-rate displays have been around for a while, it was OnePlus that popularized its usage on smartphones. As mobile gaming is becoming the norm these days, the demand for such displays is more than ever. With 5G, we might see more games to support high-refresh-rate which in turn will lead OEMs to launch more devices (even budget ones) with such panels. In fact, we already have Realme 6 and Realme 6 Pro, a budget smartphone duo from the house of BBK with 90Hz refresh rate displays for the masses.

Realme 6
Realme 6 features a 90Hz display for an affordable price tag

5G also enables various automotive applications that require large-size integrated display panels in the front instead of traditional dashboards. Also, VR and AR devices leverage 5G to offer a seamless experience. They too require high-resolution display panels to let users experience a more true to life environment. Hence, we can even expect the demand for innovative displays to surge higher as carriers launch 5G services across the world.

Xiaomi, Samsung, TCL and more help Indian TV market hit 15 million shipments in 2019

The Indian TV market has seen significant growth in recent times, especially due to the budget friendly offerings from various brands. These include TVs from Xiaomi, TCL, Samsung, Vu and more. The market hit 15 million unit shipments in 2019, marking a year on year growth of 15 percent in 2018.

The Chinese tech giant, Xiaomi, led the smart TV market while Samsung took top spot in the overall TV segment. The former saw significant growth this year with a year on year rise of 40 percent. According to reports, the surge is accredited to budget smart TVs in the 32 inch category, that led the segment due to its 11,000 INR price segment (roughly 150 US Dollars).

Samsung

A report under “TV Tracker Service” from Counterpoint, a renowned analytics firm, revealed the aforementioned figures. Furthermore, a Senior Analyst even mentioned that, “affordability and value for money are the key growth drivers. The new crop of brands such as Xiaomi, TCL and others are tapping their existing relationships with e-commerce channels such as Flipkart, Amazon, etc to successfully distribute the TVs affordably with a direct-to-consumer model.”

In other words, the Indian TV market saw growth due to certain key factors like affordability and price to value offerings. Additionally, major e-retailers like Amazon and Flipkart supplemented this growth through easier accessibility. Samsung saw a growth of 6 percent in 2019 (YoY), with most of its growth coming from its smart TV offerings which included the N5000, N7000, R5000 and R7000 lineup.

OnePlus TV Q1

The South Korean tech giant was also successful in the 50,000 INR price and higher price segments, with a reported market share of 40 percent. Although its non-smart TV portfolio saw an overall decline. The company is still the market leader in the Indian subcontinent but emerging players are making a sizeable impact as well. Best examples of this are Xiaomi and TCL. Both brands have 4K Smart TV offerings around the 50,000 INR mark, which is uncommon in most cases. Even OnePlus‘ smart TV is priced at 100,000 INR, although, it features a QLED 4K smart TV with a 50W Soundbar.

[Updated with images] TENAA: Honor AQM-AL10 is a new Kirin 810 phone on the way but with Android 9

Update: TENAA has published images of the phone and they show it has a waterdrop notch at the top for the selfie camera. It also has a rectangular camera housing for the three rear cameras and LED flash. The name of the phone is still unknown but there are speculations it might be a member of the Honor 30 series, precisely the Honor 30 Lite.

Original story begins below:

A new Honor smartphone has appeared on TENAA’s database and while it comes with pretty good mid-range specs, the phone runs Android 9 and not Android 10. The device has model number AQM-AL10, packs an OLED display, and 48MP triple rear cameras.

The TENAA listing shows the phone has a 6.3-inch 2400 x 1080 display. Based on the resolution, the phone should have a punch-hole display for dual front-facing cameras as it is the same resolution for phones like the POCO X2 and Realme 6 Pro but the spec sheet only mentions one selfie camera.

[envira-gallery id=”311005″]

There is a 2.27GHz octa-core processor inside the device which is definitely the Kirin 810 chipset. The phone will come in two RAM variants – 6GB and 8GB – with 128GB and 256GB of storage respectively. There is support for storage expansion (via Huawei’s NM memory card) up to 256GB.

The primary rear camera is a 48MP sensor, along with an 8MP ultrawide camera, and a 2MP depth or macro camera. The selfie camera is a 16MP sensor.

TENAA says the phone has an in-display fingerprint scanner and a 3900mAh battery capacity with support for fast charging. However, what is surprising is that this new phone runs Android 9 Pie instead of Android 10.

The phone will launch in black and green. It measures 157.4 x 73.2 x 7.75 millimeters and weighs 163 grams. There are no images yet, so we have no idea what it will look like.

Xiaomi invests in a camera hardware company focused on 3D image mapping

Xiaomi has recently invested in another company, which deals with camera hardware and focuses on 3D image mapping. The investment was first sighted earlier today (18th March 2020) and was made from the Xiaomi Changjiang Industrial Investment Fund.

Xiaomi

The Xiaomi Changjiang Industrial Investment Fund was initially founded back in 2017 and has since invested in multiple different fronts. Recently, the group had also invested in Hypower Microelectronics which specialized in making fast charging chips and have now also invested in DEEPerceptron. Xiaomi currently holds a 19.05 percent stake in the latter’s stocks.

According to official notes, the company which recently saw the investment is focused on developing in various fields. This includes artificial intelligence, lens technology, information technology and more. One of its notable works is regarding a particular camera hardware that supports 3D image mapping. The implications of this technology could be huge, especially in the smartphone industry. It’s even touted to be cost effective and offer precise, quick and accurate results.

Xiaomi
3D Image Face Mapping

In other words, Xiaomi may find various uses for the new camera technology. 3D image mapping can have many different applications. It can allow for growth in augmented reality or other forms of digital cross overs in real time. Furthermore, the technology can also be used to detect objects, along with their dimensions, movement, and depth as well. Unfortunately, we have no idea how the investment might turn out in the future, but the various applications are exciting to consider in future smartphone generations.

Xiaomi’s Surge Chip development reportedly abandoned, shifting focus to Low Power BL & RF chips

Remember Xiaomi’s first-ever self-developed processor, the Surge S1? The chip made headlines back in 2017 as it pushed the Chinese smartphone maker into the elite group of tech companies like Samsung and Huawei that could develop their own chipsets. However, after the Surge S1, we didn’t hear much about its chip development progress. The latest information from China suggests that Xiaomi has likely abandoned its chipset project.

Snapdragon 765G featured
All of Xiaomi’s smartphones in the past couple of years have been powered either by Qualcomm or MediaTek

According to an industry insider, Xiaomi is focusing its attention on other projects which are not as complicated or expensive as developing an application processor. Instead of making smartphone processors, the company is looking to develop low power Bluetooth, RF chips, and other peripheral components. He notes that this would be different from Huawei’s strategy of completely investing in its chipset business.

He further adds that Xiaomi seems to be looking for a balance between developing a competitive product and financial profit. In this regard, it is diversifying its chip business to avoid the long-term costs of research and development.

Over the past couple of years, Xiaomi has heavily invested in a number of chip companies. Just last week, it acquired a stake in Hypower Electronics, a fast-charging chip maker. Earlier this year, Xiaomi made strategic investments in two chipset manufacturers. Last year, Xiaomi had also invested in a chip designing firm, Verisilicon.

Even before this comment from the industry insider, there were reports about Xiaomi abandoning its smartphone processor project and converting this department into an employee-owned company with shares in Xiaomi. So after considering this new information, it looks like Xiaomi has indeed given up on its self-developed chipset ambitions.

Surge-S1
Xiaomi’s first chipset, Surge S1 was released in 2017

The company’s first processor, the Surge S1, received a lukewarm response. But the Surge S2 was expected to be the real star of its processor lineup featuring four Cortex-A73 powered performance cores. This would have made for an upper mid-range chip back in 2018. However, a Xiaomi executive revealed that the company had faced unexpected hurdles in its development project. At the start of 2019, he assured that the team was still working on the new chip.

But it looks like the company’s second Surge chipset may never make it to the market. Designing a smartphone chipset is an extremely complicated process, engulfed with a lot of challenges. Even the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer, Samsung, with years of experience in this industry, is still unable to match Qualcomm chips in terms of efficiency.

Notably, Xiaomi has not made any official announcement regarding its chipset development since 2018.

Samsung Galaxy S20 may see lower sales than the Galaxy S10: Report

According to a new report, Samsung‘s latest flagship series, the Samsung Galaxy S20, may see sales numbers lower than that of its predecessor, the Galaxy S10. The primary reason for this has been linked to the recent Coronavirus pandemic, which has affected various economies and industries.

A source from the industry has revealed certain information regarding the sales figures of the Samsung Galaxy S20 lineup. Reportedly, the Galaxy S10 in the same duration of time managed to sell more than the latest premium flagship. “Samsung has also radically cut its demand for the S20 parts,” according to another source.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra
Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra

Historically, the South Korean tech giant generally changes its strategy and market approach after the first 3 months after launch. This method worked with the Galaxy S10 which had initially seen healthy sales in the first quarter of 2019, but sales slowed down in the second quarter. Apparently, Samsung had predicted that its Samsung Galaxy S20+ model in the lineup would see the most sales. However, this turned out wrong as the Galaxy S20 Ultra had received the most number of pre orders.

The sources claimed that “Pre-orders for the S20 Ultra rose to over 50% of the total volume.” After this, Samsung has reportedly had to order more camera modules for the high end flagship device. For those unaware, the Galaxy S20 Ultra features a 108 megapixel camera alongside a hybrid zoom lens capable of 100x magnification. Back in 2019, the smartphone maker had also wrongly predicted that the Galaxy S10 would see higher sales, but the Galaxy S10+ ended up selling more.

Samsung galaxy s10 plus
Samsung Galaxy S10

As of right now, Samsung is likely to be preparing for the launch of its Galaxy Note 20 series in the latter half of this year. The company will also face many obstacles, many of which also relates to the recent Coronavirus outbreak. Notably, the recent sales trend has shown that Samsung’s flagship sales have been falling gradually. The Galaxy S5 sold over 40 million units while the Galaxy S8 sold 38 million units. Going forwards, the Galaxy S9 sold just 32 million units while the Galaxy S10 sold about 36 million units. Thus, we may expect figures close to, but lower than this for the Galaxy S20 series.

Alleged Huawei Nova 7 models pass 3C certification with 40W fast charging

Huawei is getting ready to launch its upcoming P40 series of flagship smartphones on 26th March through an online event. Now, ahead of the P40 lineup going official, details about the Nova 7-series phones have started surfacing online.

In the latest development, two Huawei smartphones with model numbers JER-AN10 and JEF-AN00 have passed through 3C certification process, revealing their fast charging standard details. The device in questions are the upcoming Huawei Nova 7 and Nova 7 Pro.

Huawei Nova 7 / 7 Pro 3C Certification

As per the details revealed through this 3C certification, the Huawei Nova 7 with model number JER-AN10 and Nova 7 Pro with model number JEF-AN00, both will come equipped with 40W Super Fast Charging support.

Earlier, another Nova series smartphone, the Huawei Nova 7 SE with model number CDY-AN90 was passed through the same certification process, which is expected to come with 22.5W fast charging standard.

As per the reports, the Huawei Nova 7 lineup will come with an OLED display panel along with an in-display fingerprint scanner for added security. Under the hood, the top-end variant will be powered by the company’s own flagship Kirin 990 5G chipset.

Since Huawei does not have a mid-range mobile chipset with 5G connectivity support, it remains to be seen if the company announced a new 5G chipset during or before the Nova 7 series launch to make the phone more affordable.

It is being reported that the Huawei Nova 7 SE could come powered by the yet unannounced Kirin 820 5G chipset, which will be successor of the Kirin 810 launched last year. Some of the key details of Kirin 820 5G had also appeared earlier this year.

There are reports indicated that the Nova 7 series smartphones will get launched in China in the month of April 2020. However, the company has not yet confirmed this but we expect to know more about this in the coming days or weeks.
