HMD Global announces Nokia C2 entry-level 4G phone

Last December, HMD Global announced the Nokia C1 – a 3G smartphone designed for those purchasing their first smartphone. Now, it has followed it up with the Nokia C2 which shares a similar design to its predecessor but brings some upgrades including 4G.

Nokia C2 featured

The Nokia C2 is bigger with its 5.7-inch screen which has an HD+ resolution and an 18:9 aspect ratio. It is made from polycarbonate and comes in Black and that Cyan color we love from the Nokia 7.2. Like the new models announced in the past 6 months, this too has a dedicated Google Assistant button on the left side.

There is a Unisoc processor inside it but the spec sheet doesn’t specify which it is. Nevertheless, it is a quad-core chipset with a 1.4GHz clockspeed. There is 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage which can be expanded to 64GB via a MicroSD card slot.

HMD Global ships the phone with a 5MP f/2.2 camera positioned in the middle along with an LED flash. Just like the Nokia C1, this also has a 5MP selfie camera with an LED flash too.

Since the Nokia C2 has a bigger screen, its battery capacity has been bumped up to 2800mAh from the C1’s 2500mAh capacity. However, you are still limited to 5V 1A charging. Oh! This is a removable battery too.

There is Bluetooth 4.2, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, GPS, a MicroUSB port, a 3.5mm audio jack, and an FM radio receiver built-in. The phone will come in single SIM and dual SIM variants (both Nano SIMs) and will be available in Africa, Asia Pacific, and the Middle East. The model that will be sold in Saudi Arabia will have different network bands from that of the aforementioned regions.

The Nokia C2 will run Android 9 Pie (Go Edition) out of the box and not the latest Android 10 (Go Edition) which has already been announced. Hopefully, it and the Nokia C1 get an update in the future.

There is no info on the price and availability yet. However, HMD Global has an event this Thursday where they will most likely reveal the price and date of release.

Flipkart to announce a 43-inch Nokia TV soon

Last year, there were some new players in the smart TV market and all of them are brands that are associated with mobile phones. The list includes Huawei, Honor, OnePlus, Motorola, and Nokia. The first Nokia smart TV was borne from a licensing deal between Flipkart and Nokia that allows the former to launch smart TVs with the Nokia brand name just the way HMD Global launches phones with the Nokia brand name.

The first Nokia smart TV packs a 55-inch 4K display with JBL speakers and an INR 41,999 (~$566) price tag. That sure is pricey compared to the TVs from Xiaomi. Now Flipkart has announced that it plans to launch a more affordable 43-inch model.

Nokia TV 43-inch

The 43-inch Nokia TV will have slim bezels on three of its sides according to a poster said to be that of the TV. The bottom is thicker because of the speakers which are also made by JBL. Just like the 55-inch model, it will run Android TV 9 with support for Google Assistant and Chromecast built-in. It will also have Dolby Audio and DTS Surround Sound.

With respect to price, the TV is rumored to cost INR 30,999 (~$418). That sure isn’t cheap compared to Xiaomi’s Mi TV 4X 43-inch model that launched for INR 24,999 (~$337) last September.

There is no info on when the launch will be but it probably won’t be a big announcement like the first model.

The device may arrive with features similar to the base variant but that may also not be the case. So stay tuned for more updates regarding the Alexander Wang version of the Vivo X30.

Here’s Why Realme didn’t launch the Masters Edition for the X50 Pro 5G

Realme had recently launched its latest premium flagship device, the Realme X50 Pro 5G. The smartphone arrived with top notch specs and features, however, the company did not launch a Master Edition. Many were curious as to why that was the case, and now we finally know for certain.

Realme

Xu Qi, the Vice President of Realme, responded to certain questions directed towards him online on Weibo, the Chinese microblogging website. The senior executive addressed the questions and said that the Master Editions of Realme smartphone require a lot of time and effort. According to his post, the Master Editions need long periods of time in terms of creative endeavors, polishing/refinement and even for research.

At the very least, it would still require the company six months of effort. This holds especially true for the handsets designed by Naoto Fukasawa. Previously, Realme had launched the X2 Pro Master Edition and X50 5G Master Edition. While the latter is based on cement themes, the former focuses on red brick aesthetics. Various dots and lines can be observed in the geometric design schemes which showcase its personality as well.

Realme
Realme X50 Pro 5G

The Weibo post also mentions that the Naoto Fukasawa designs every 6 months and that the company aims at releasing even “cooler” designs from different genres. Thus, it can be assumed that a Realme X50 Pro 5G Master Edition may arrive sometime in the next few months. But that is still unconfirmed and we will have to wait for an official announcement to be certain. So stay tuned for additional information that should be available soon.

[UPDATE: New Logo Launch CONFIRMED] OnePlus 8 series launch date could finally be revealed on March 18

UPDATE:

OnePlus’ Carl Pei has officially confirmed that OnePlus will be revealing its new logo on March 18. He didn’t say anything about the OnePlus 8 series or its launch date, but we might hear more about that too on the same day. Meanwhile, this is what he said (translated) about the March 18 teaser.

“Last year, after a series of preliminary surveys, we found that our brand image in many global online and offline channels did not meet the high standards we had in mind.

Therefore, our initial intention of launching this new renewal (visual brand identity) project is to achieve a simple wish — “no compromise”, to provide users with a better experience, which should be implemented from all aspects of the brand. We need to study, iterate, and polish the entire visual system to make it what it should be.

On Wednesday, March 18, a new vision system will be unveiled, hoping that the new design will take on a new look and make your eyes more comfortable.”

According to the recently surfaced images of the OnePlus logo (from China’s Trademark office), OnePlus could ditch its iconic RED color for an all-black logo.

Original story as follows.

The OnePlus 8 series is one of the most anticipated smartphone lineups in the first half of 2020. Now it looks like the company is finally warming up the arrival of the new series. Earlier today, OnePlus’ official Weibo account teased a date: March 18.

OnePlus 8 launch teaser

The social media profile says something new is coming on the above-said date and there’s also an image of something under wraps. Given the timing of this teaser, it’s safe to assume that this teaser could be for the OnePlus 8’s launch. Recent rumors have said that the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro models could be announced around mid-April, so the company could officially announce the OnePlus 8 launch date this week! Given the situation in China and the rest of the world, it’s likely that the launch event will be held offline. However, we haven’t received any official word from the company yet.

We expect to see at least two new models in the OnePlus 8 series: The OnePlus 8 Pro and the standard 8. The standard model is expected to feature a triple camera setup at the back. TPU cases for the phone were recently spotted on Giztop as well, revealing its three-camera setup at the back. The Pro model was also recently spotted at the hands of Robert Downey Jr.

Motorola Razr launched in India for Rs. 1,24,999: No match for Samsung’s Foldable

Motorola officially launched the Razr foldable today in India at a staggering price tag of Rs. 1,24,999. This makes it a tough buy in the Indian market which already has the Galaxy Z Flip featuring a similar foldable form factor and significantly better specifications.

Motorola has a few offers for the Razr like Rs. 10,000 cashback on Citi Bank credit as well as debit cards and no-cost EMI options. There are other offers as well like discounted Moto Care and double data offer from Reliance Jio.

Pre-booking starts today with shipping kicking off from April 2.

motorola razr 02

The Motorola Razr mimics the clamshell design of the iconic Razr smartphone from the 2000s. Like the Galaxy Z Flip, the phone features a flexible display that can be folded at the center, vertically, to transform into a compact form factor. The Razr comes with a 6.2-inch pOLED display with a 21:9 aspect ratio (2142 x 876 pixels) and a secondary 2.7-inch cover screen upfront (800 x 600 pixels). Note that the cover screen is significantly larger than the one on the Galaxy Z Flip (1.06-inch) but that’s the only major area where the Razr gets an edge.

The Motorola Razr features a mid-range Snapdragon 710 processor with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. It has a 2510mAh battery with 15W fast charging. At the back, there’s a single 16MP rear shooter with f/1.7 aperture, dual pixel AF, and dual-LED flash. On the front, there’s a 5MP selfie shooter.

Motorola Razr
Motorola Razr

There nothing much to talk about the Motorola Razr, especially after seeing that price tag. The Galaxy Z Flip with Snapdragon 855 Plus and dual 12MP shooters is a much better alternative to the Razr in India at Rs. 1,09,999. Essentially, the Razr is an overly expensive mid-range smartphone that can fold and with Galaxy Z Flip in the competition, the Razr doesn’t really stand a chance in India.

Xiaomi to develop a Special app allowing the Mi Watch to Control NIO Cars

Xiaomi has just announced that it has officially partnered up with NIO, the automobile manufacturer. In the new collaboration, the Chinese tech giant will launch a special application that is capable of performing certain functions in the car from the partner brand at any time.

One would only require the special app on the Xiaomi Mi Watch smartwatch to remotely activate certain functions. This essentially makes the Mi Watch a remote control of sorts. According to official notes, users can display the vehicle nicknames (as set by owners) on the NIO app through the smartwatch. It even displays other information regarding the vehicle like current driving status, power levels, remaining battery life and more.

Xiaomi

Users can even visually discern the vehicle doors closing or opening, windows and trunks being raised or lowered. In other words, an in depth schematics is laid out through the NIO app. This is even useful in many other ways as well, since the car can send certain prompt notifications through the Mi Watch. A great example of this would be the uneven or abnormally low pressure in the tires of the car.

In terms of functions that can be remotely operated, one can open the doors through the app, turn on the air conditioning, can lock or unlock the door, and even raise or lower the window. Notably, the app even allows for easy car location function if the owner can not find where the car has been parked. Through the NIO app, one can simply trigger various whistle alarms and flashing lights which will act as a beacon and notify the users.

Xiaomi

Reportedly, every NIO car model will be supported in the Xiaomi Mi Watch NIO app. Furthermore, features like NFC will also be supported in the future. Xiaomi is currently one of the largest wearables makers in the world, and this cooperation only seeks to grow its ecosystem and its usefulness.

AMX XP-60 Charger Review: A Well built, Fast USB PD Multi-port charger for laptops & smartphones

Today, people from all walks of life travel with multiple devices, like their laptops, smartphones, wireless headphones and maybe even a tablet. And with all these devices, you have to carry around their respective chargers.

And imagine what happens when a couple of these devices or even all of them run out of charge around the same time. Even if you hunt down a working socket, it will take hours to charge all of your electronic devices, one by one. Personally I have been in this situation multiple times before and my power bank has often come to the rescue. But most power banks are slow to charge and can charge only two or maximum three devices simultaneously.

The solution to this problem is a travel charger with multiple ports. There are a number of options available in the market right now and you might have already heard about AMX chargers. AMX recently sent me a unit of the AMX XP-60 and the Infiniti X USB 3.1 Gen 2 cable for review and here are my thoughts.

AXMXP-60 60W charger

First, let’s take a quick look at the key features of the two accessories.

AMX XP-60 PD Charger

  • 1 x USB-C USB PD (Power Delivery) Port @ 45W
  • 3 x USB-A Ports with @ Max 17W (5V x 3.4A)
  • PPS 3.0 (Programmable Power Supply)
  • Blue LED light (lights up when charging)
  • BIS Certified
  • AMX PROMISE: 12 MONTHS HASSLE-FREE WARRANTY. Reach Out To Them At [email protected]

AXMXP-60 60W charger

The XP-60 comes with a matte-finish in a flat rectangular form factor. This might not be the best design for a charger because it takes up a significant chunk of your socket space when plugged in. To give you some perspective, it’s significantly wider than the stock OnePlus fast charger but a lot thinner.

AXMXP-60 60W charger in socket
Notice how it eats up some button space too? However, I haven’t had an issue plugging it in most sockets. The only problem is that when two sockets are close together, you might have some trouble plugging something into the socket beside it.

AMX INFINITY X Type USB-C to C Cable (USB 3.1 Gen 2)

  • Type-C to C cable
  • 2 meters in length
  • E-marker chip
  • Supports USB PD up to 100W
  • Up to 10Gbps data transfer (4K UHD transfer supported)

AXM Infinity X 4K Cable

The Infinity X Type C to C cable comes with 16 cores of high gauge tinned copper wire with multiple sheathing which is further enclosed in a tinned copper foil. On the outside, the cable has a rubbery finish. The USB-C ends are elongated due to the eMarker chips inside. The wire looks pretty durable but honestly, I would be careful with the USB-C ends.

AMX XP-60 Charging Experience

The AMX XP-60 travel charger delivers exactly what it claims. It’s perfect for charging a Macbook Pro and can even charge other USB PD supported laptops via its USB-C port.  Note that the original Macbook Pro charger tops up the laptop at 61W. However, the AMX XP-60 charger can charge the Macbook at a maximum of 45W. This means, the charger will be slightly slower than your stock Apple charger but the difference won’t be significant. In fact, the sheer convenience of having a single charger for your Macbook, smartphone, and even tablets makes it a really useful travel charger.

AXMXP-60 60W charger specs

I have tried charging other USB-C laptops too, for example, the AMX XP-60 charger could top up the Dell Inspiron 14 5490 but at a slightly slower rate than the stock Dell charger. Basically, if you have a USB-C port on your laptop with USB-PD support, this charger will be able to charge it.

You can charge Your Smartphone Up to 45W too!

If you have a smartphone like the Galaxy Note 10+ which comes with a 25W stock charger, the AMX XP-60 will charge it at a much faster rate. Personally, I didn’t have the Note 10+ to test out the charging speed, but it charges my Pixel 2 XL at the same rate as my stock 18W charger.

AXMXP-60 60W charger

Note that the charger supports Programmable Power Supply (PPS 3.0) – which is essential for some USB PD supported smartphones like the Note 10+. In addition to that, cables with an eMarker chip will ensure you have the fastest charging speed from your charger. So the combination of AMX XP-60 and the Infinity X cable should enable fast charging for most smartphones.

Charging via the 3 USB-A Ports

Each of the three USB-A ports on the charger can charge up to 12W. But the total wattage from the three ports together cannot exceed 17W. So, on most occasions, if you are charging three devices together, note that your charging speed will be less than 10W per port. For recent Android devices, this can be quite slow. So don’t go around thinking that all of your devices will fast charge simultaneously.

AXMXP-60 60W charger

However, this is a tradeoff with most travel chargers. In order to keep the charger compact, which is essential for its portability, manufacturers have to use shared circuitry, which means the total of 17W will have to be shared between the three USB-A ports. But the fact that you can charge three gadgets simultaneously at around 7-10W is a pretty big deal, especially if you are used to a 5W iPhone charger.

I tried charging two phones and a headphone via the three USB-A ports simultaneously. At no point did the charging speed on ports connected to the smartphones exceed 7W. As for the port with a headphone or a power bank, the maximum I could squeeze out was around 5W. This is slower than the charging speeds on my stock Pixel and Poco chargers, but I personally don’t mind the slower speeds as long as all of my devices are being charged simultaneously. In 30-40 minutes, the devices connected to the three USB-A ports had charged up to a reasonable level.

Also, the charger remains cool even when it’s powering up four devices simultaneously. So you don’t have to worry about overheating.

Pros & Cons: XP-60 Charger & Cable

  • Compact & Portable design
  • Works with almost all USB-PD enabled devices including Macbooks and Smartphones
  • Charges 4 devices simultaneously, including a laptop or smartphone at 45W
  • eMarked Cable with PPS 3.0 ensures fast USB-PD charging on most devices
  • 2 meters cable length is super convenient
  • Remains cool even while charging 4 devices simultaneously

  • The wider form factor and two pin design makes it tricky to plug it into some sockets (this issue is solved in the second-gen model)

Conclusion

As I mentioned above, for those who want a 45W USB PD fast charger which can simultaneously charge 3 other gadgets at around 10W, I would definitely recommend getting the AMX XP-60 travel charger! I personally have been using it daily for nearly a month now and I am pretty satisfied with the charger.

Where can you buy it?

You can get the AMX XP-60 charger and Infinity X cable via its official website for Rs. 1,499 and Rs. 899 respectively. Or you can purchase both the accessories together from the website at Rs. 2299, wherein you save Rs. 100.

You can also get it via Amazon India for Rs. 2499.
