There are multiple ways to incorporate a secondary display into a device depending on the design, and one such way is to place a second display on the other side of the phone. This is exactly what Xiaomi has done in a patent that has popped up online.
A sketch for the Xiaomi patent has surfaced online and it shows a device with two displays – one on each side. However, this secondary display on the rear is not like that of phones like the Vivo NEX Dual Display or Nubia Z20. Heck! It doesn’t even look like the secondary display of the Meizu Pro 7 Plus. Instead, it is a much smaller display, the same size as the quad-camera housing on the back of the phone.
The sketch shows the screen is placed on the opposite side of the camera housing for symmetry. The display will most likely show caller ID and notification alerts when the phone is placed face down. It should also be able to display miniature controls for music playback.
On the front, the device is shown to have a practically bezel-less design. The primary screen is devoid of a punch hole or notch and the top frame manages to squeeze in a speaker, a proximity sensor, and a notification sensor. There is no selfie camera which means the quad rear sensors will serve a dual function but that is odd since the rear display is too small to serve as a proper viewfinder.
There are no details of the patent just this sketch. So we do not know when it was filed. Nevertheless, this like many more designs we have seen in the past may not appear in a commercially-available device.

Meizu 16T in Daylight Orange
HTC U11 in Sunrise Red
The Meizu 16T is a gaming-centric device that features a 6.5-inch 1080p FHD+ display and Snapdragon 855. The phone comes with a linear vibration motor and Game Mode 4.0 for an immersive gaming experience. The handset also features dual stereo speakers and a 3.5mm audio jack. Meizu has also teamed up with Tencent for better game optimizations. The Meizu 16T has a vertical triple camera system with Sony IMX362 12-megapixel with f/1.9 aperture and PDAF as the primary lens, an f/2.2 aperture 8-megapixel ultrawide lens with 118-degree field-of-view and another f/1.9 aperture 5-megapixel depth sensor.
Xiaomi launched the Mi Mix Alpha with much fanfare back in September 2019. But what comes after the Alpha? It’s most likely a foldable smartphone, right? A recent patent from Xiaomi at China’s CNIPA gives us a glimpse of what we could expect in the future. And it looks like the next-generation version of the Mi Mix Alpha.
We are calling it the Mi Mix Alpha II simply because it looks very close to the basic design of the Alpha concept. Xiaomi’s new patent shows two hinges that allow the phone to fold on both sides. The basic design is similar to the tri-folding prototype that was shown by Xiaomi a few months back. One side of the phone features a strip that houses the camera setup. When folded this black strip lies a bit off-center which is almost exactly like the Mi Mix Alpha. The only big difference here is that the Alpha concept is in a permanently folded state while this one can transform into a tablet.
Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha is like a permanently folded phone
If you are wondering why this looks similar to the Mi Mix Alpha, then know that Xiaomi’s foldable project and the Mi Mix Alpha share the same internal code series. The two projects were developed simultaneously but the company could overcome the technical challenges associated with Mi Mix Alpha’s project first which allowed them to announce the curved Alpha first.
Samsung’s Galaxy Note10 series come with a punch-hole display that is very different from that of the Galaxy S10 series. Not only is the hole smaller but it is also positioned in the upper middle portion of the screen and not on the right. That design will no longer be exclusive to the Galaxy Note10 and Galaxy Note10+ as a new leak has revealed the upcoming Galaxy A71 will feature a similar design.
The leak is a set of 3D renders courtesy of seasoned leakster, Steve Hemmerstoffer, also known as OnLeaks. This time, he has partnered with CashKaro. The renders give us an early look at the Galaxy A71’s design.
Samsung has shaved the bezels off on three of the sides and left just a few millimeters at the bottom. The display is most definitely AMOLED but the hole appears to be slightly bigger than that of the Galaxy Note10’s.
On the back, the Galaxy A71 features a rectangular camera bump similar to that of the Smartisan Nut Pro 3. The camera housing is big and holds four cameras arranged in an L-shape. There is also an LED flash beside the sensors.
1 of 4
The black camera housing sticks out like a sore thumb against the phone’s white rear panel but it should be less noticeable on a black variant, that is if there will be one. The back is curved on the sides for a better grip. Since there is no fingerprint scanner on the back, there is definitely one under the screen.
The Galaxy A71 has a USB Type-C port at the bottom and it is flanked by the speaker grille and primary microphone on the right and the 3.5mm audio jack on the left. The SIM tray is on the left side of the frame while the volume and power buttons are on the right.
OnLeaks says the display is 6.7-inches and the phone measures 163.5 x 76 x 9.2 millimeters (including the bump’s thickness).
It has been reported that the Galaxy A71 will be powered by the Exynos 980 processor which means it will have support for 5G. Its model number has been revealed to be SM-A7160 and there are rumors it will launch in China first.
Xiaomi just launched a new variant of the Redmi Note 8 Pro which differs from the others for its memory configuration. The handset finally comes with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage, that is a very important configuration for a device known for being an “affordable gaming phone”. But is this new memory configuration enough to make the smartphone more interesting than the latest mid-rangers from the other brands? If you want, we can find it out together by comparing it with the Honor 9X Pro and the newly-announced Vivo S1 Pro sold at similar prices.

Design
If we consider the aesthetics, the Redmi Note 8 Pro does not shine for its originality. It has a rear-mounted fingerprint reader, a classic waterdrop display and nothing you can’t already find on a lot of midrange devices. A very interesting device when it comes to the design is the Honor 9X Pro, which comes with a notch-less display thanks to a motorized pop-up selfie camera. The fingerprint reader is side-mounted, so the rear side is clean and minimal, besides being very suggestive. Even the Vivo S1 Pro is very original with its diamond-shaped camera module on the back, and it even sports an in-display fingerprint reader.
Display
In this trio, Vivo S1 Pro is the only smartphone to boast a Super AMOLED display. Super AMOLED panels are the trending ones because they offer more brilliant colors alongside deeper blacks. But this does not mean that Redmi Note 8 Pro and Honor 9X Pro (equipped with IPS panels) are disappointing. The former comes with very high brightness and even the support to HDR technology, so it still offers a pretty nice image quality. Even the Honor 9X Pro is cool with its LTPS technology, but I would personally prefer the Super AMOLED colors of the Vivo S1 Pro and its in-display fingerprint reader.
Specs & Software
As said above, Redmi Note 8 Pro is considered an affordable gaming phone. People call it so because it boasts a very powerful chipset with high CPU and GPU performance: the Helio G90T by Mediatek. It is not at the same level as flagship chipsets such as the Snapdragon 855, but it still delivers very high speed and smoothness. So it takes the first place. Right after, there is Kirin 810 built at 7 nm, with high performance and very low energy consumption. Despite it is a Qualcomm chipset and Qualcomm chipsets are the most trending ones, the Snapdragon 665 is actually inferior to both Helio G90T and Kirin 810 when it comes to performance.
Camera
In each case, we are talking about midrange-class camera phones. All come with multiple cameras on the back, but the most convincing one is the Redmi Note 8 Pro with its 64 MP quad camera. However, Vivo S1 Pro is better at taking selfies with its 32 MP front snapper. Honor 9X Pro is the only which lacks a dedicated macro camera and comes with a triple rear camera.
Battery
Vivo S1 Pro and Redmi Note 8 Pro have a bigger 4500 mAh battery. Unfortunately, we still had no chance to test the battery life of the Vivo S1 Pro, but given the AMOLED display and a more efficient chipset than Redmi Note 8 Pro, it might surprise you.
Price
In the Chinese market, Redmi Note 8 Pro starts from about €180/$200, Vivo S1 Pro costs about €290/$320, and Honor 9X Pro starts from €271/$300. Overall, considering the actual price and specifications, I define the Redmi Note 8 Pro a smartphone with a higher value for money thanks to its great cameras, amazing hardware and very affordable price.
ColorOS 7 was officially announced yesterday with a bunch of audio-visual enhancements and feature additions. However, we were disappointed to hear that Realme X2 Pro would be one of the last phones to receive the update, as late as April 2020.
Today, Realme CMO has revealed that the ColorOS 7 early adopter program for the Realme X2 Pro will kick on December 18, which is just a few weeks away. So those who can’t wait to get an early taste of ColorOS 7 can look forward to this program. However, this date is for users in China and we still don’t have a date for the international Realme X2 Pro users. But we should hear more about this on November 26, when OPPO officially unveils the ColorOS 7 in India.
Note that the ColorOS 7 early adopter program for devices like the OPPO Reno, Reno 10X Zoom, and Reno Ace is already live. Users in China can register to become an early adopter via their smartphones. You can read more about it here. As for the ColorOS 7, it brings a lighter visual interface that’s easy on the eyes and less saturated in colors. Feature additions include system-wide dark mode with forced dark mode for third-party apps, three-finger screenshot and editing, a special flashback button for multitasking, and new UI customization options. For more details on ColorOS 7 features check out this launch article.
When our Editor-in-Chief first alerted me of this story, my line of thought had been that Sony was trying to catch them young by grooming tech-inclined kids right from the nursery. That isn’t the case! Sony has launched its first workplace nursery school in Okinawa, Japan. The nursery school is established to cater to the children of employees and the community alike. The school was established by Sony Business Operations Inc. (SBO) and is located within the precinct of its headquarters in Okinawa.
Sony Business Operations Inc. (SBO) undertakes administrative work for companies in the Sony Group. The firm has an employee strength of 380 and interestingly, 80% of them are women in their child-bearing age. This explains the need for such a facility which became operational in July this year.
Another reason is that due to the geographical location of the company, most employees commute to the office by car. The company hitherto occupied two business facilities in Tomigusuku City in the south of Okinawa Prefecture from the time it was established but moved into a single office complex in the neighbouring city of Nanjo in February 2019. Since most employees are balancing work with childrearing, Sony recognised a considerable latent need for childcare facilities within the company. The plan for the facility was considered when plans began for the move to a single office complex. The facility is said to have alleviated the extra burden on employees arising from moving the company.
The facility, which can accommodate 70 children aged between 0-5 years, is managed by a professional agency that has got a reputable track record in the management of a nursery and comes equipped with vital facilities to cater to the needs to the children. This will no doubt create a conducive work environment for employees. Way to go Sony!
Waterfall displays might be old story since both Vivo and Huawei have launched their flagships with such super curved designs. However, Samsung’s new patent hints that the South Korean tech giant may join the waterfall club in the future. First reported by LetsGoDigital, the company has obtained patents for a waterfall display smartphone that curves to the very edge of the sides.
Source: LetsGoDigital
Interestingly, the patent was granted on all major intellectual property offices like KIPO (Korean Intellectual Property Office), USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) and WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office), essentially granting permission to use this design worldwide.
In case you are wondering, the difference between a waterfall display and a regular edge display is the extent to which the display curves on the sides. Waterfall displays occupy the entire side, leaving very little or no room for things like power or volume buttons. In Samsung’s patent application, the power button seems to be located on top. We can’t find the volume buttons on the sides, so the phone is most likely using software powered volume controls.
The orange power button on the Mate 30 Pro
To recall, both Vivo Nex 3 and Huawei Mate 30 Pro have ditched volume buttons. While the Mate 30 Pro has a physical power button, the Nex 3 has a pressure-sensitive portion on the frame.
Samsung’s patent for the waterfall display only covers one part of the smartphone. But a commercial phone would most likely feature waterfall displays on both sides.
The Mi CC9 series includes the Mi CC9e, Mi CC9, Mi CC9 Pro, and the Mi CC9 Meitu Custom Edition. While all four phones are borne from Xiaomi and Meitu‘s partnership, the Mi CC9 Meitu Edition contains more of Meitu’s input. Its cameras are powered by Meitu’s imaging technology and not Xiaomi’s. It also has Meitu’s branding and comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.
When it launched back in May, it was priced at ¥2599 (~$370). Xiaomi has now announced that the phone will get a price slash down to ¥1999 (~$284) at 10 AM tomorrow. So if you have set your eyes on the Mi CC9 Meitu Edition, tomorrow is an opportunity for you to get the phone at a cheaper price.
The Mi CC9 Meitu Custom Edition has a 6.39-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a waterdrop notch. It is powered by a Snapdragon 710 processor and draws power from a 4030mAh battery.
The selfie camera is a 32MP sensor with AI low-light portrait mode. There is a 48MP Sony camera on the rear and it is paired with an 8MP ultrawide angle camera and a 2MP depth sensor. There are lots of features including a Mimoji, Xiaomi’s take on AR emojis.
The phone has NFC, an IR blaster, dual-SIM support, an audio jack, and a USB-C port. It supports 18W fast charging and runs MIUI based on Android 9 Pie out of the box.
Xiaomi and Huami‘s Amazfit range of smart bands and fitness trackers pair with smartphones via the Mi Fit app. Amazfit smartwatches are paired with smartphones using their own dedicated Amazfit Watch app. The Mi Fit app also works with a bunch of other smart fitness products made by Xiaomi and its partner companies such as the Mi Smart Scales and smart shoes made by 90, Li-Ning, Kangnai, and Sprandi. The app has got a new update in China, bringing several new features and fixes.
The new version comes with the firmware version number V4.0.12 and one of the major fixes is the issue of iOS 13 OS not receiving notifications. The instruction is that after upgrading to iOS 13 and you don’t receive call notification and other notifications, go to System Settings – Bluetooth – click “(i)” on the right side of the currently bound device to open the sharing system notification and turn it on.
The firmware upgrade which is for the Chinese version also brings support for Shijiazhuang Card, Xiamen e-Tong Card for the Mi Band 3 NFC version and Mi Band 4 NFC version which also gets support for Hainan card, Shijiazhuang card, Xiamen e-card. The Amazfit Cor 2 also gets support for the three cards with the update. Further, the app is now adapted for Android 10 and also gets some bug fixes.

Xiaomi launched the Mi Note 10 and Mi Note 10 Pro on November 6 as the global versions of the Mi CC9 Pro and Mi CC9 Pro Premium Edition which made its debut in China a week earlier. The launch event took place in Madrid, Spain but the device looks set to begin its global journey. Xiaomi Malaysia has announced via its Facebook page that the Mi Note 10 and Mi Note 10 Pro will officially be launched in Malaysia on December 3.
The Mi Note 10 models came out with a bang when it was announced earlier this month, thanks to the massive 108MP main camera sensor it packs. The camera setup is no gimmick as the Chinese variant floored several flagship models including the iPhone 11 and Galaxy Note 10 to top DXOMark ranking alongside the Mate 30 Pro. The device has clinched several rave reviews but as it is common with large sensors, big isn’t always better as there are times you may find the camera output unimpressive.
Apart from the powerful camera setup, the Mi Note 10 and Note 10 Pro equally comes with a sleek design and powerful specs marshalled by a Snapdragon 730G chipset. The Note 10 comes with 6GB of RAM while the Note 10 Pro is available in 8GB RAM + 256GB storage combo.
Both models pack a 6.47-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a fingerprint reader underneath and a waterdrop notch at the top housing a 32MP selfie camera. You may never run out of battery with the Mi Note 10 and Note 10 Pro as they have a big 5260mAh cell with 30W fast charge support.
We’ll have to wait till the launch day to find out the official retail prices in Malaysia. In Europe, the Mi Note 10 sells for €549 while the Mi Note 10 Pro is priced at €649.
The Honor V30 arrives in five days and while the camera prowess seems to be the focus, there are other important details too. Ahead of the launch, the device has made its way to Geekbench and the benchmark tool reveals some details about the upcoming flagship.
Benchmarked as the Huawei OXF-AN10, the Honor V30 is shown to run Android 10. We are sure there is a heavy layer of Honor’s Magic UI on top and it will come along with quite a number of new features.
The phone has 8GB of RAM and is powered by an octa-core processor with a base frequency of 1.95GHz. This chipset is the Kirin 990 5G as its base frequency is higher when compared to the Kirin 990’s 1.86GHz.
The Honor V30 scored 3856 points in the single-core test and 12,221 points in the multi-core test.
The Honor V30 will launch alongside the Honor V30 Pro and both will have support for 5G. Both devices will have punch-hole displays albeit of different sizes and types. The phones will also have 60MP primary rear cameras and support for fast charging. The Honor V30 Pro will add support for wireless charging, a first for the manufacturer.
After a long wait, Huawei‘s first foldable flagship Mate X went on its first sale on November 15 and reports indicate the device was sold out in minutes. The Mate X isn’t a cheap phone as it comes with a steep 16,999 Yuan (~$2,420) price tag. Not only is the phone itself an expensive model, replacing the screen if it gets damaged will cost you a fortune (up to 7,080 yuan ($1,007). It has now emerged that the Mate X may not be a very durable model after all.
This bit was gathered from the warning that was printed on the Mate X’s retail box. Among the series of notes on the box, one is quite eye-catching. It reads that the phone should not be folded in low-temperature environments below -5 degree Celsius. Now, we understand the foldable display technology is a very delicate one and that makes the Mate X a very fragile phone. Moreso, it uses an out-folding screen design which is the ideal definition of a foldable screen phone but it offers zero protection to the screen. The Galaxy Fold deploys an in-folding design.
Why this warning sounds strange is that it is winter season in some parts of the world already, including China, and the temperature gets below -5 degree Celsius. But the reason for this warning may not be far from the fact that the display may stretch when it is folded and under such extremely cold weather condition, it may have shrunk under the principle of thermal expansion and contraction. Thus, the screen may get damaged if there is an attempt to fold it under such low temperature.
Clearly, Huawei still has some work to do with the Mate x. Hopefully, the device won’t go the way of the Galaxy Fold. That’s perhaps why the company is taking a careful approach to releasing the phone.
During the World 5G Conference in China which kicked-off today, Huawei Chairman Xu Zhijun delivery a keynote speech at the main forum. In his speech, he claimed that China has the ability to make the best 5G in the world.
He attributes this ability to several advantages that the Chinese market has, which includes local government support, industry participation, as well as consumer awareness among others. Further, the country also has the well-established terminal industry chain and 5G technology.
He goes on to add that the world is sharing the dividends brought by China’s 5G development and he believes that the 5G industry has also boosted global demand for 5G network equipment and upstream semiconductor demand, and at the same time, it drove the development of terminals as well.
Xu Zhijun also predicted that China’s 5G users will exceed 200 million mark by the end of year 2020. He said that the introduction of each generation of mobile technology has been controversial, and there are no killer applications, but history has proved that these concerns are of little significance when it comes to larger things.
Currently, three Chinese telecom providers are working to roll out 5G services in the country which include China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom. Ahead of the launch, they conducted a pre-subscription drive which saw over 9.3 million users signing up for 5G even before the official rolled out.
