In recent years, pricing of the premium flagship offerings from the likes of Apple and Samsung have been climbing up and have crossed the $1,000 mark. Along with the premium offering, Apple had launched the iPhone XR last year, keeping the company’s earlier price point of around $750.
Now, according to the report from the market analysts, the shipments of the Apple iPhone XR crossed the 30 million units mark making it the best-selling smartphone in the first half of this year.
While the iPhone XR certainy isn’t cheap being priced at $749, however, it’s the least expensive offering compared to the other iPhones launched last year — iPhone XS and XS Max. According to the IHS Market, 13.6 million iPhone XR units shipped in the first quarter and 13.3 million shipped in the second quarter — bringing the total to 26.9 million for the first half of the year.
The second best-selling smartphone for the H1 2019 is the Samsung Galaxy A10, which shipped almost half of the units compared to the iPhone XR. Commenting on this, Jusy Hong, Research and Analysis Director said:
“Compared to the Android-based smartphone makers, Apple maintains a relatively small model lineup. This means that Apple’s total sales volume is divided among fewer models. As a result, each of Apple’s iPhone models tends to generate higher shipment numbers than comparable Android smartphones, such as those sold by Samsung.”
The Samsung Galaxy A50, Apple iPhone 8, and Xiaomi Redmi 6A are ranked third, fourth, and fifth bestselling smartphone respectively. Other devices in the list include Redmi Note 7, Galaxy J2 Core, Oppo A5, iPhone XS Max, and the Galaxy A30.
In years past, Europe’s biggest electronics show, IFA 2019, was the place Huawei chose to unveil a new Mate, the biggest of its flagship phones. That’s not the case in 2019. We won’t see the Mate 30, the latest in the series, until Sept. 19, when it’s due to launch in Munich. Instead, Huawei has unveiled its next-generation silicon that will power its upcoming mobile products, the Kirin 990 chipset.
Built with a 7nm extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) process, Huawei says its new integrated chip is smaller than Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 + X50 5G modem, allowing for more compact 5G smartphones. The Kirin 990 5G is also the world’s first mobile SoC with more than 10 billion transistors, making it more efficient with power consumption.
But perhaps the most exciting thing about the Kirin 990 is that it’s also the first full-frequency 5G SoC — it’ll support both non-standalone and standalone architectures as well as TDD/FDD full frequency bands. The Kirin 990 is a true unified design, supporting Sub-6 GHz 5G networks on both SA and NSA architectures. To date, neither Qualcomm, nor Samsung, (nor Apple), have a unified chip design, Huawei is the first.
The Kirin 990 5G is a 7nm octa-core chipset that has 10.3 billion transistors. It uses two big, two middle and four little cores to optimize multitasking, with clock speeds of 2.86GHz, 2.36GHz and 1.95GHz respectively. The 990 5G also packs a 16-core Mali G76 graphics processor which should offer plenty of power for mobile gaming, as well as smart cache built in to reduce bandwidth by up to 15 percent.
To aid with mobile photography, a new fifth-generation Dual ISP boasts DSLR-level hardware noise reduction and block-matching and 3D filtering. Huawei’s smartphone cameras already produce stunning low-light results, but it looks like that can be improved further. Dual-domain noise reduction will also be available for use on video production, as well as frame-by-frame AI color adjustments.
Aside from implementing the 5G modem, the biggest change in the Kirin 990 is going to be the NPU, or Neural Processing Unit. Boiled down to basics, it’s a coprocessor optimized for the sort of vector math that’s the lifeblood of machine learning frameworks like Facebook’s Caffe2 and Google’s TensorFlow.
Qualcomm’s AI Engine, Samsung’s own Neural Processing Unit, and Apple’s A12 Bionic achieve the same ends through different means, but Huawei claims its homegrown Da Vinci architecture — the evolution of the NPU in the Kirin 970 and 980, which were designed by Cambricon — is far and away the most capable.
There’s still a bit of worry within all this however. The Kirin 990 relies extensively on Arm’s chip designs for both its CPU and GPU elements. However, Huawei’s relationship with the British chip designer was thrown into disarray earlier this year when the US imposed sanctions on the Chinese company.
Huawei has a press event in Munich on the 19th of September, where we are expecting the Huawei Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro flagship phones to be announced – and likely a 5G model as well, which perhaps might be the Pro 5G only. We’re extremely eager to hear more and experience the Kirin 990, so hopefully we get to see its full potential when the time comes.

Alongside the slew of new phones from Nokia, HMD Global also had a few other surprise announcements up their sleeves for IFA 2019. Say hello to the Nokia Power Earbuds, a pair of true wireless earbuds from the company that promise amazing battery life, water resistance and lightweight designs.
Each earbud packs 6mm graphene drivers. They’re Bluetooth 5.0 compatible and offer easy access to your phone’s voice assistant. On top of this, they’ve also got touch controls for your controlling music or volume. They’re even IPX7 rated and can survive in 1 m of water for up to 30 minutes, which is fairly important for a tiny pair of earbuds like these.
Each earbud packs 50 mAh battery and offers up to 5 hours of usage. The charging case comes with 3000mAh battery that Nokia claims can charge the buds 30 times in total, and each charge giving you around five hours of playback time. So all in all you get 150 hours of life from a single charge. It’s also really nice that the case uses USB-C for charging.
The Nokia Power Earbuds come in two colour options, those being Charcoal Black and Light Grey. They’re priced at €79 ($88) and will go on sale from October. We haven’t gotten an official sale date, or even a list of countries where the earbuds will go on sale, though we’re pretty sure it’ll come to most countries that offer Nokia devices.

The OnePlus TV is all set to get launched later this month in India. Ahead of the launch of this new product, the company has been revealed details about the Smart TV at regular intervals. Now, the company’s CEO Pete Lau has shared an image of the remote controller that will come with the OnePlus TV.
The OnePlus TV remote comes with USB Type-C port for charging and has regular Android navigation buttons. Interestingly, there’s also a dedicated Google Assistant button, a OnePlus button and another button which is completely blank. On the top part, it seems that there’s a touch pad of some sort.
On the right side of the remote, there’s a volume rocker key. At a first glance, the remote for the OnePlus TV looks quite similar to the Apple TV Siri remote. Design wise, the remote seems like a premium product, complimenting what the company has been teasing about its upcoming Smart TV since past few weeks.
From the listing of the TV on Amazon India, it has already been confirmed that the OnePlus TV will come with a 55-inch 4K QLED display with support for Dolby Vision, bringing extraordinary color, contrast, and brightness to the screen. It has also been revealed that the TV will have 8 speakers with 50W output which is powered by Dolby Atmos sound for cinematic experience.
Earlier, it was leaked that the device comes packed with 2GB of RAM and is powered by MediaTek MT5670 quad-core processor which is clocked at 1.5GHz, coupled with ARM Mali G51 graphics processor.
Pete Lau has already revealed that the OnePlus TV will come powered by Android TV and said that the company worked alongside Google to optimize the Android TV user experience. He has also promised to offer Android TV updates for at least 3 years.
The OnePlus TV will be first launched in the Indian market later this month because the company has already partnered with content providers. Nevertheless, it should be announced in Europe, USA and China in October.
Xiaomi has today announced that it will be holding an event in China on 9th September where the company is expected launch its new products. One of the product to launch at the event is Mi Charge Turbo.
The Mi Charge Turbo is a wireless charging technology designed for the 5G era, says the company. The product will reportedly provide an improved overall speed as well as will outline the future of the wireless charging technology, claims Xiaomi.
Currently, Xiaomi’s wireless flash charging technology maxes out at 20W while the wired charging peaks at 27W. Now, it seems that the company has closed down the gap and is all set to unveil new wireless charging for the 5G smartphones.
While the company had introduced the 20W wireless charging technology on its Mi 9 flagship smartphone, the same technology is yet to show up on another smartphone from the Chinese company.
It remains to be seen what speed the upcoming Mi Charge Turbo technology will support but it will definitely be faster than 20W. It’d be great if it surpasses Huawei’s 30W wireless charger which was certified by FCC last month and is expected to charge the upcoming Huawei Mate 30 Pro.
Offering faster charging technology for the 5G smartphones makes sense given that the technology drains out the battery more. We expect the company’s upcoming flagship smartphone — Mi MIX 4 to come powered by this new Mi Charge Turbo Wireless Charging.
Meanwhile, the Chinese company has also scheduled a launch event in India on 17th September where it is expected to unveil multiple products in its smart home range.

While using the DualScreen with G8X ThinQ, users can make use of the second screen as a gamepad or a larger keyboard or it can be also used to accessed two apps side by side.

Alcatel 3X
The Alcatel 3X brings a 6.52-inch HD+ display with a resolution of 720 x 1600 pixels, and an aspect ratio of 20:9. It is powered by the MediaTek Helio P23 MT6763V chip with the Mali G71 GPU, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage.
The triple-camera setup on the back consists of 16MP+8MP+5MP shooter, underneath which, centered, there’s a fingerprint scanner. The front camera is an 8MP unit, and powering everything is a 4,000mAh battery. The Alcatel 3X, available in three colors (Jewelry Black, Jewelry Green, and Jewelry Rose) will be available starting €149, or roughly $165.
The most affordable in the bunch is the brand new Alcatel 1V. It comes with a 5.5 LCD display with a 480 x 960 resolution and 18:9 aspect ratio. There’s a 5MP F/2.2 front camera and another 5MP F/2.4 shooter around the back paired with an LED flash. The back is also where you’ll find the fingerprint scanner.
Under the hood the 1V packs an octa-core Unisoc SC9863A chipset paired with 1GB RAM and 16GB storage which can be expanded via the microSD slot. Helping things run smoothly is Android Pie (Go Edition) which also brings all the standard Go apps optimized to work on entry-level devices.
The phone features a plastic build and has all three buttons on the right side with the power, volume and a dedicated Google Assistant button. The battery capacity is 2460 mAh and it charges over microUSB. There’s also Dual Nano SIM support. The Alcatel 1V will be available for €79 ($86) and comes in Anthracite Black, Metallic Blue, Metallic Gold and Metallic Rose colors.
Alcatel Smart Tab 7
Alcatel’s new tablet is a 7-inch Android 9 Pie experience with a 600 x 1024 pixel resolution. Sold in Prime Black, it has a VGA rear camera and 2-megapixel front-facing shooter. With a 2,580mAh battery and Android 9 Pie.
Upfront we have a 7-inch display with a 600×1024 resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio. There’s a 2MP selfie cam which should come in handy during video calls. The back features a single VGA shooter and a built-in kickstand. Under the hood, we have the quad-core MediaTek MT8167B chipset paired with 1.5GB RAM and 16GB storage which is expandable via microSD.
Honestly this one’s kinda boring, but it’s also the cheapest device on this list at a mere €79, about $87. Those are all the Alcatel products we’re getting at IFA 2019. Stay tuned for more releases from other manufacturers, the tech extravaganza is just starting!
Motorola has been gifting us some solid smartphones under its One series. Not quite long ago, the company launched the Moto One Action with a camera setup that makes the device performs well as an action camera. The Lenovo-owned smartphone maker has now launched the Moto One Zoom at IFA Berlin with a strong focus on the camera.
The One Zoom smartphone comes with a rare 21:9 display which we have seen on the Sony Xperia 1 and the latest Xperia 5. The device packs a glass panel at the front and rear with the glass at the back having a satiny finish. The phone sports a 6.39-inch OLED FHD+ display with a waterdrop notch which houses a 25MP front camera for selfies. That promises to bring some stunning selfie output.
At the heart of the device is an upper-mid-range Snapdragon 675 chipset paired with 4GB of RAM and 6GB of RAM. There is also 64GB and 128GB of internal storage onboard.
The rear panel definitely holds the most interesting feature of the One Zoom and that is the quad-camera setup. The four cameras are arranged in two pairs stacked vertically at the middle with the LED flash at the side. Just underneath the camera, there is the legendary Motorola logo which also doubles as a notification light. That’s cool but since it is at the back, you could easily miss out on a notification.
The main camera is a 48MP sensor but which actually shoots at 12MP by default because of pixel binning. The second sensor is a 16MP wide-angle camera that captures a 117-degree field of view. The third is an 8MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom plus OIS, and lastly, there is a 5MP depth sensor. We’ll have to wait to see how the cameras perform.
The device runs on Android Pie with an overlay of Motorola’s custom UI. The phone isn’t packing a waterproof build but comes with some level of splash resistance.
The device is already available to buy in the US from September 5 via Motorola’s website for $449.99. The phone is also available internationally for 429 euros also starting September 5.
After several months of silence, HMD Global finally renewed its midrange lineup with two brand new devices. The company took advantage of the IFA 2019 which just kicked off in Berlin to unveil Nokia 6.2 and Nokia 7.2 at the same time. Meanwhile, Chinese companies released a lot of new phones, especially value for money ones. That is why we think it is worth making a comparison between the Nokia 6.2 and the latest mid-rangers of the same kind. For this specs comparison, we chose two potential best-sellers of the upcoming period: the powerful and gaming-centric Redmi Note 8 Pro, and the best-buy Realme 5 Pro which debuted with a very affordable price tag despite offering upper-midrange specifications.

Design
The presence of a glass back and a body that is more compact than Redmi Note 8 Pro would make me go for the Nokia 6.2. To be accurate, Realme 5 Pro is the most compact phone of the trio, but it is also the only built with cheaper plastic materials. That is why my choice would be Nokia 6.2. However, do not forget that Realme 5 Pro is splash resistant, unlike its opponents. If you do not care about dimensions, then you would better go for the Redmi Note 8 Pro as it offers a more resistant glass back thanks to the Gorilla Glass 5 protection, as well as more interesting color variants, at least according to my tastes.
Display
The display is one of the strongest points of Nokia 6.2. Despite being just an affordable phone, the Nokia 6.2 boasts an HDR10-compliant display, so it is able to provide better colors, especially with multimedia content. Redmi Note 8 Pro and Realme 5 Pro offer just the classic IPS panels that you can find on most of the midrange phones, so they have nothing special to give you in terms of viewing quality. On the other hand, Redmi Note 8 Pro with its bigger display size is more comfortable for gaming and advanced users.
Specs & Software
Nokia 6.2, Realme 5 Pro and Redmi Note 8 Pro are all sold at mid-end prices, but when it comes to performance, there is an abyss between the Redmi Note 8 Pro and its two rivals. Its stunning Helio G90T processor is much faster and it provides way better graphics performance than both the Snapdragon 636 and the Snapdragon 712 found on the Nokia 6.2 and the Realme 5 Pro. Redmi Note 8 Pro even comes with an advanced liquid cooling system which makes the phone stay cool even after long gaming sessions. Note that Nokia 6.2 is the only to feature Android One, so it will get updated faster and more constantly for a longer period. But it is the phone with the lowest-end hardware department here.
Camera
Even though it is a gaming-centric device, Redmi Note 8 Pro is also a great camera phone. Alongside the Realme XT (which is not in this comparison) it is the world’s first phone with a 64 MP main cameras (very high resolution but still a midrange sensor), and it provides the best photo quality compared to Realme 5 Pro and Nokia 6.2. Right after, there is the quad-camera setup found on the Realme 5 Pro with a 48 MP main sensor, while Nokia 6.2 has a main sensor with just a 16 MP resolution. However, we are sure that it will give us surprises given the advanced camera enhancing technologies described by HMD Global at IFA 2019.
Battery
The big 4035 mAh battery paired with a 10 nm processor and a compact display should make Realme 5 Pro last more than Redmi Note 8 Pro, despite the latter has almost the same battery capacity. The weak point of the Helio G90T SoC is the production process, which influences the efficiency in a negative way. Nokia 6.2 has a 3500 mAh battery, so we do not think it can compete.
Price
Nokia 6.2 will cost €200/$220 in its base variant, Realme 5 Pro starts from €175/$193 and Redmi Note 8 Pro has a €180/$198 starting price. Unless you need the best display and faster updates, we do not think it is worth going for the Nokia 6.2. At the end of the day, Redmi Note 8 Pro is way more convincing than Nokia 6.2 and Realme 5 Pro as it offers higher performance, a better camera on the paper, a bigger display, and a great build quality.
Motorola is one company that has continued to churn out quality pones and the company doesn’t look like it is ready to relent. At the ongoing IFA trade show in Berlin, the Lenovo-owned company has announced the Moto E6 Plus, a bigger and improved version of the E6 which was launched earlier this year.
The Moto E-series is basically a budget series and contains some of the company’s most affordable phones. So, the design and hardware setup usually reeks of an entry-level model and the E6 Plus is no different despite its plus-size build. The device packs a 6.1-inch display with a waterdrop notch and an HD+ resolution of 720p. The device utilises a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and has an 80% screen-to-body ratio. Motorola didn’t indicate if the screen is an OLED type or LCD but since this is a budget phone, it is most definitely LCD.
A MediaTek Helio P22 chipset is at the heart of the Moto E6 Plus. The device comes in 2GB RAM and 4GB RAM versions and 32GB/64GB of internal storage. The phone packs a 3000mAh removable battery under the hood. The rear cover is actually made from plastic and can be removed easily. There is no 3.5mm audio jack on board while the device features a micro-USB connector for charging and data transfer. Connectivity options include GPS/GLONASS, Bluetooth 4.2, and Wi-Fi. There is also an FM radio on board but looks like there is no fingerprint sensor at the back.
For photography, the Moto E6 Plus comes as the first E series model to pack a vertical dual-camera setup nested at the top left corner. The main camera has a 13MP sensor with an f/2 aperture while the second camera is a 2MP depth sensor. At the front, there is an 8MP selfie camera with f/2 aperture for capturing cool selfies. The front camera can be assisted by a screen flash when shooting in darker spaces.
The E6 Plus comes in four colours; Blue, Cranberry, Cherry, and Graphite. No word yet on its pricing and availability.
Together with the announcement of the professional desktop and monitor of the ProArt Series, Asus also announced 3 new laptop workstations that will be part of the series in the event that took place ahead of the IFA 2019 show. In addition, the company teased the gaming community with the upcoming Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701 that boasts a crazy 300Hz display refresh rate! Let’s check out what they’ve got.
Asus ProArt StudioBook One
Taking the top performer spot of the ProArt series, the StudioBook One is the first laptop to feature an Nvidia Quadro RTX 6000 professional-grade graphics card according to Asus. Of course, a top performer needs a top CPU and Asus chose the Intel 9th generation CPUs that together with the 4K Pantone validated display with 120Hz refresh rate and edge-to-edge glass, results in a real beast. The display also features a wide color gamut with 100% of the Adobe RGB spectrum and a Delta-E value of less than 1.0. As Asus claims, the device sports a powerful cooling system featuring a lightweight aerospace-grade aluminum alloy thermal module. When the lid is open, the chassis is tilted by 4.57 degrees to maximize airflow.
Asus ProArt StudioBook Pro X
The StudioBook Pro is the 1st Nvidia Quadro-powered StudioBook to come with the company’s ScreenPad 2 -a touch display instead of a classic trackpad- and a four-sided NanoEdge display. Thanks to the slim bezels, the overall size of the 17″ laptop is about the same as an average 15″ one. Of course, the display features a wide gamut and covers 97% of the DCI-P3 color space. To power the device, Asus went with Intel’s Xeon and 9th Gen Core i7 CPUs, Nvidia Quadro 5000 Series GPU while the storage options include RAID 0 configuration capable of speeds of up to 6GBps.
AsusPro B9 (B9450)
Besides the powerful StudioBook models, Asus also revealed the AsusPro B9 (B9450), “the world’s lightest business laptop” according to the company with a weight of 880g. Thanks to the very slim bezels, the 14.1″ laptop has the volume of a typical 13.3″ laptop which is great. The AsusPro B9 is just 14.9mm thick and as the company officials say, it has a long-lasting battery. This is mainly achieved thanks to Intel’s 10th Gen Core CPUs that are very power-efficient. Storage can reach up to two 1TB PCIe SSDs with support for RAID 0 or 1, there’s WiFi 802.11ax, the fastest to date with up to 1.32Gbps speed, and Thunderbolt 3. This too is tested for MIL-STD 810G military standard, has a Trusted Platform Module 2.0 (TPM) security chip for data security, and an IR camera for Windows Hello authentication.
Asus ROG Zephyrus S GX701
But Asus reserved a surprise for gamers too. During the event, they teased an upcoming laptop, which should be the world’s first laptop to have a 300Hz refresh rate display! The Zephyrus S GX701 will be available in October of this year and will feature Intel’s 9th Gen CPUs, an Nvidia RTX 2080 GPU, and Pantone-validated display. Of course, it will have the company’s Active Aerodynamic System for cooling, Aura Sync lighting, and GPU Switch. More details are yet to be revealed as we approach the launch date.
