At a tech event held in China yesterday, Xiaomi‘s CEO Lei Jun was one of the key speakers. During his speech, Lei in his usual manner revealed some key insights into the company’s 5G journey. He disclosed that the company commenced pre-researching 5G technology and mobile phones three years ago.
This statement is another reminder that Xiaomi is a company built on foresight. A couple of years back, Xiaomi pioneers the use of flexible OLED panels on the Mi Note which they believe will become popular in years to come. Just a few years after, foldable phones using flexible OLED panels is gradually gaining ground. We won’t forget in a hurry, the company’s effort in R& D that culminated in the amazing Mi Mix that kickstarted a wildfire of full-screen phone designs.
Lei Jun says Xiaomi will launch another 5G phone in September. That may likely be the Mi Mix 4, the successor to the Mi Mix 3 which has a 5G version that was released earlier this year. LeiJun sees 5G as injecting new vitality into the smartphone industry that has been declining in recent years. He also reiterated that AI+IoT+5G is the next generation of super internet, and Xiaomi will do its best in that regard.
“In the coming year, 5G will bring about earth-shaking changes in the fields of communication, mobile Internet and Internet of Things. For Xiaomi, it is necessary to actively embrace this change and increase investment in technology, especially the technology maturity of 5G mobile phones. And cost control is done well,” Lei Jun said.
Lei Jun also spoke on the company’s investment in AIoT where he earlier hinted that Xiaomi will invest 10 billion yuan in the next five years. Regarding the performance of its AIoT business, Lei Jun hinted that apart from mobile phones which is the core engine, Xiaomi’s AIoT field also has TVs, notebooks, smart speakers, routers and its rich smart hardware ecosystem. The company exec disclosed that the revenue from this business in the first half of the year reached 27 billion yuan, which is a year-on-year increase of 49%.
Tech startups are striving to make all products smart as the world adopts the Internet of Things (IoT). Smartphones, smartwatches, smart cars, smart homes and other devices are slowly changing the way people live. One of Xiaomi‘s recent patent application is for a smart device that you’ve probably not heard of before – a Smart Scarf.
Scarfs are used frequently during winter or cold weather. During such weather conditions, it is common to notice users adjusting the scarf tightly around the neck when the weather is cold and then loosen it when they start feeling hot. Xiaomi’s smart scarf patent details a device that is designed to remove the need to adjust the scarf around the neck manually. The Smart Scarf adjusts its grip automatically and heats up in accordance with the change of the ambient temperature.
The patent application which was spotted recently is titled “A smart scarf and its control method” with application number: 201010365323.8. The scarf is composed of a scarf body, a temperature sensing unit and an infrared heating unit. The scarf itself is no different from the traditional scarf but it comes with a temperature sensing unit set on the scarf body to sense the temperature of the surrounding environment. The infrared heating unit is also embedded on the scarf and can be connected to the sensing unit to heat up the scarf using infra-red technology in accordance with the ambient temperature.
In addition, the sketch shows the scarf has an elastic adjustment unit which is connected to the temperature sensor. The scarf automatically loosens or tightens in according to the ambient temperature.
As shown in the above figure, the elastic adjustment unit includes a pair of electric motors (41) and an elastic member (42). The elastic member could be an elastic band. There is also a power supply unit which is also required to ensure proper operation of the motor and temperature sensing unit.
We can’t say how heavy the scarf will be as the patent application didn’t contain details of the weight. However, except Xiaomi uses lightweight components, the inclusion of these components, especially the battery and motor may make it too heavy. However, the company says that multiple elastic components were connected to the same pair of electric motors. Also, the battery and motor were placed on both ends of the scarf body to keep the weight of the smart scarf low.
The Xiaomi Smart Scarf is a smart wearable device and that is because it can be connected to a mobile phone via Bluetooth or WiFi and then, parameters such as heating and tightness can be controlled through a dedicated mobile phone app.

Apart from fans of pure Android OS, one custom ROM that is heralded for its unique and fluid build is Meizu‘s Flyme OS. Even as of several years back when other custom ROMs are being plagued with issues, Meizu’s Flyme OS has been outstanding. But in the past two years, Flyme’s progression seems to have slowed down drastically.
As early as the beginning of this year, Meizu Technology’s founder Huang Zhang (Jerry Wang) had revealed that Flyme 8 was already in the works. Since then, several details have been revealed but no date was fixed for the release. That is about to change as Meizu may officially unveil Flyme 8 on August 28. A press invite sent out by the Chinese company showed the company will the Flyme 8 OS alongside the Meizu 16s Pro. Already, the Meizu 16s Pro is expected to drop on August 28 and reservation is even ongoing.
Flyme 8 is expected to bring a new, refreshed look to the custom ROM with new features such as fingerprint vortex animation, small window 2.0, home guard 3.0, and game mode 4.0. The Meizu 16s Pro is expected to be the first model to get the new custom ROM version. Since the Flyme 8 has been a long time coming, we don’t expect the company to delay before rolling out updates to its old models.
Huami is one of the top wearable manufacturers in the world today. The company released its first self-developed RISC-V based Huangshan 1 processor last year. While that was a significant feat for Huami, we are hearing that the successor to the wearable-focused chip will be even more impressive. According to the popular leakster Ice Universe, Huami’s Huangshan 1S chip will be manufactured using the advanced 7nm process!
Amazfit GTR is its most recent smartwatch
7nm is the manufacturing process used by flagship-grade chipsets of 2019. So it will be really impressive to see if Huangshan 1S is built on the same process. If true, it would make Huami only the second Chinese company to have developed a 7nm chipset after Huawei. This will be a tremendous achievement for the wearable maker who has been releasing a lot of smartwatches lately. What’s more, he says that we could see it inside the Amazfit Sports Watch 3 that’ll launch tomorrow.
At tomorrow’s event, we’ll see at least two new smartwatches from Huami. One will be an Apple Watch killer featuring a similar square-shaped design but with a custom-built high PPI AMOLED display. The second watch will be the successor to the Pace 2 that was announced just a few months back. The watch called the Amazfit Sports Watch 3 or the Pace 3 will feature a transreflective display as its predecessors and NFC. It will even have a special Elite edition featuring a premium titanium body.
For more details on the Apple Watch killer, read this article. The launch is scheduled for tomorrow so we’ll get official details very soon!

When Xiaomi and Meitu signed a partnership agreement late last year, the deal said Xiaomi will make and sell devices under the Meitu brand. It has been nearly a year since the partnership and the only Meizu-branded device released is the Xiaomi CC9 Meitu Edition.
Technically, the Xiaomi CC9 Meitu Edition isn’t a Meitu smartphone as it doesn’t have the Meitu design language and is just the regular CC9 with some special camera features for content creators. For die-hard Meitu fans, the company’s CEO revealed at a press conference today that a true Meitu smartphone will be announced next year.
Mi Xinhong shared a few details about the upcoming phone. First, it will be developed and sold by Xiaomi just as the partnership agreement states. It will also be the first of a new product line. Xiaomi’s own CEO, Lei Jun, had also revealed this info prior to today’s announcement.
There is no info on the features of the phone but we sure should expect something quite interesting. We definitely will love to see the flip-camera phone (pictured above) which was rumored to actually be Meitu’s first Xiaomi-developed phone.
Even though Meitu hasn’t released any smartphone this year, its other business arms have grown in the past year. Its online advertising revenue is reported to have increased by 27.2% year-on-year to ¥362.3 million. Meitu is also stated to have incorporated a new business model which includes a premium subscription service. The new business is said to have grown to more than 6 times since it was introduced. Meitu’s social media platforms’ active users is also reported to have increased to 308.1 million users, a 0.6% increase from December 2018. Average daily usage time has also increased from 5-6 minutes to over 12 minutes.

Redmi Note 7 was one of the best-selling smartphones of 2019 and the absolute best-seller in several countries. Now, Xiaomi’s sub-brand is getting ready to launch its successor: the Redmi Note 8, which will also come in a Pro variant. Given the importance of this upcoming smartphone, a lot of leaks and rumors surfaced in the past couple of weeks, which bared all of its main specifications. That why we decided to make a rumor roundup ahead of the launch which is due in a couple of days.
In this Redmi Note 8 Pro specs and features rumor roundup, you will find everything you need to know about the Pro version and the standard version before launch.
Design
1 of 4
According to the official renders published by Xiaomi, the Redmi Note 8 will have a completely renewed design compared to its predecessor. Its back cover has an uncanny resemblance to OPPO Reno devices due to several design elements. And it’s not just the colors and the gradient hues but also the way everything is arranged at the back.
The Redmi logo will be placed vertically just like the Oppo logo on the Reno devices, and the rear camera department will be placed at the center instead of the upper left corner like the Redmi Note 7. The handset will have a special arrangement for the antennas which will be suitable for gamers who often hold their device in landscape mode. Yes, the Redmi Note 8 will also be a phone focused on the gaming experience. Redmi Note 8 might come in three color options: Meteorite Black, Fantasy Blue, and White, while the Note 8 Pro is rumored to come in Ice Jade, Fritillaria White and Electro-optic Ash. The front should house a waterdrop notch on the Note 8 Pro and Note 8.
Display
We do not expect revolutionary displays on the Redmi Note 8 and 8 Pro. They are supposed to come with a classic IPS LCD panel carrying a Full HD+ resolution and a waterdrop notch, just like the display on the Redmi Note 7. The presence of a rear-mounted fingerprint reader is a further confirmation of an IPS display instead of an AMOLED panel.
In addition to this, a 90Hz screen would be perfect for gaming, right? And guess what, the Helio G90T does support 90Hz panels. However, that’s highly unlikely, so we are almost sure that won’t happen.
Specs & Software
Unlike the Redmi Note 6 and 7 line-ups, the Redmi Note 8 Pro will be powered by a MediaTek chipset. The chipmaker already confirmed that Redmi Note 8 Pro will be equipped with an Helio G90T while the Note 8 will come with a Snapdragon 665. As the letter “G” in its name suggests, the G90T is specifically made for gamers.
The Helio G90T is built on 12 nm and comes with 8 cores including two Cortex A76 running at 2.05 GHz frequency and six Cortex A55 with a 2 GHz frequency. The chip supports HyperEngine and Dual Wi-Fi connection which allows the user to connect to two WiFi networks at the same time. Indeed very useful tech for gamers.
Redmi Note 8 should come in three variants: 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage, 6/64 GB, and 6/128 GB. The Pro variant should come in a configuration with 6/64 GB, one with 6/128 GB, 8/128 GB and the most expensive one with 10 GB of RAM and UFS 2.1 internal storage. The score obtained by Mediatek Helio G90T on AnTuTu benchmark is almost on par with the Kirin 810 found on the Honor 9X. Note that the Kirin 810 is built at 7 nm, so this is definitely an outstanding result. There will also be liquid cooling on board, just like a lot of valid gaming phones. It is able to reduce the phone’s temperature by 4-6°C.
Camera
It is already confirmed that both the Redmi Note 8 and 8 Pro will be equipped with a quad-camera setup on the rear side. On the Redmi Note 8 Pro, the primary sensor will be a Samsung ISOCELL Bright GW1 with a 64 MP resolution, which is nearly double of 8K’s resolution (9248 x 6936 pixels). The Redmi Note 8 Pro is also tipped to come with 25x zoom capability and 4-to-1 pixel billing (tetracell) which will allow producing 16 MP photos with bigger pixels, more light and a stunning level of detail. The fourth sensor of the Redmi Note 8 Pro will be placed on the right of the other three ones, just below the LED flash.
Unlike popular belief, the fourth sensor of the Redmi Note 8 is not a TOF sensor, but it will probably be a super macro camera. The secondary sensor is an ultrawide lens, while the third one is a depth sensor. The camera module of the Redmi Note 8 will include at least one different sensor when compared to the Note 8 Pro.
Redmi Note 8 render
The camera arrangement remains the same but it’s placed differently in the two models. Redmi Note 8 will have a quad camera placed on the top left corner (as seen above), while on the Pro variant it will be placed centrally.
While Redmi Note 8 Pro will boast a 64 MP main sensor, the vanilla Note 8 is supposed to sport a 48 MP lens as the primary sensor. The first camera samples surfaced are simply impressive.
Redmi Note devices always had big batteries, and the trend will not change with the Redmi Note 8 line-up. The Pro version is already confirmed to sport a huge 4500 mAh battery with a charger faster than 10W. We expect to see a smaller battery onboard the vanilla Redmi Note 8, but it should be no less than 4000 mAh. Note that while the battery will be big, the processors will not be the most efficient ones, considering that they are built at 12 nm / 11 nm. Just to make an example, the Kirin 810 found on the rival Honor 9X is built at 7 nm, so it consumes a lot less energy.

The phone will go on yet another presale on August 29.
The iQOO Pro 5G is already expected to be a hot-selling phone as a result of the sleek design, powerful hardware especially the 5G modem and decent price tag. Huawei‘s HarmonyOS is one of the most talked about topics in tech at the moment, and the possibilities for it are endless. In fact, right now we’re already hearing rumors about HarmonyOS making rounds on Weibo. According to the rumors, Geely, a popular car manufacturer in China, has partnered with Huawei to expand the usage of HarmonyOS even further.
Now, Geely already has their own GKUI running on their car, which means if these rumors are true, there are two possibilities here. The first is that Geely is planning to drop their current GKUI in favor of Huawei’s HarmonyOS. The second option is that Geely will work with Huawei to allow their GKUI cars to communicate better with devices powered by HarmonyOS.
If this is true, then this is a fairly big deal since it’s the first time since we’ve seen HarmonyOS on a non-Huawei device. On top of that, Geely is a big name in China, which means Huawei has the reach and connections to make the operating system a more mainstream option. HarmonyOS is after all an IoT operating system, so the more partners they get the better.
Mr Lu pointed out that when Harmony OS was unveiled, Huawei’s product roadmap included devices like TVs, smart watches, in-vehicle display units and some of its PCs. Smartphones and tablets were noticeable omissions and this was by design Out of this list, two of the products are already down, and we’re eager to see what’s coming next.
The Huawei Mate 30 will be rocking a very unique look when it launches later this year. After months of leaks, we now have a clear look of the phone thanks to a leaked official poster.
The poster which was shared on Weibo shows the Mate 30 Pro will have a wide notch similar to that of the Mate 20 Pro. We can make out about three cameras inside the notch. We bet the phone has a 3D face unlock system for security.
The Mate 30 Pro has an IR blaster and a microphone at opposite ends of the top. There are also antenna lines too. The display is shown to curve to the sides and the bezels are quite thin. The phone does look really gorgeous but we are more excited about the back.
The Mate 30 Pro will come with four rear cameras that are placed in a circular housing. The phone has a significant camera bump which we believe has an important function explained below.
Earlier today, Android Authority reported that Huawei and Honor may be working on Moto Mod-style cases for its phones. These cases were discovered on the Bluetooth SIG website which has a listing of several cases. The model number of these cases hint at their functions. For example, there is a game case, a snorkeling case, a health case, and an amplification case. These cases will connect via Bluetooth 4.2 and provide additional features. The listing is even more detailed and reveals the health case will have features like blood pressure monitoring, glucose-level monitoring, temperature measurement, and heart rate measurement.
The model number also reveals these smart cases will be available for different phones as the codenames are included in the model numbers. The codenames for some of these yet-to-be-announced phones are Anna, Elsa, Noah, Ark, Sulawesi, Maxwell, Emma, Keira, Yarlung, Zangbo, Volga, Danube, Titian, Palawan, Pascal, CHA, PEN, Piaget, Kelly, Audrey, Catherine, Eagle, Ruby, Bugatti, Baikal, etc.
Based on the design of the Mate 30 Pro, we believe it will be the first device to come with these smart cases and the cases should flush with the camera bump when attached.
The Mate 30 Pro also has what appears to be a Xenon flash and a smaller circular LED flash. We can also see LEICA written on the back but can’t make out the other text.
The phone will have a red-painted power button and will be available in purple and green. The poster also reveals the phone will be powered by the Kirin 990 processor and have superfast charging. The phone is rumored to launch on September 19.
The Redmi Note 8 Pro will be coming in two colors – green and white. We expect more color variants may be announced in the months after its launch. However, in addition to those two colors, there will also be two limited edition variants of the phone unveiled on Thursday. These limited-edition models will be a result of the partnership between Redmi and World of Warcraft to celebrate the popular game’s 15th anniversary. The official Weibo account for Redmi has shared photos of the special retail boxes the phone will come in.

The Redmi Note 8 Pro World of Warcraft Limited Edition will be available in two versions. One has a red and black box while the other has a blue and white box. The contents of this limited gift box edition Redmi Note 8 Pro are currently unknown. We presume there may be a custom theme as well as World of Warcraft wallpapers pre-loaded with the device. There may even be a custom case.
More details should surface on August 29 when the Redmi Note 8 pro will be announced.
World of Warcraft was released in 2004 by Blizzard Entertainment. It is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) and was the most popular MMORPG in 2009. As at 2017, the game had grossed over $9 billion in revenue.
Xiaomi has launched the MIJIA Sports Shoes 3, the third-generation model of its smart sports shoes. The sports sneakers is expected to go on sale today.
The MIJIA Sports Shoes 3 design is quite similar to that of the Sports Shoes 2 that was released last year. Xiaomi brought some improvement to the Uni-moulding production product used in manufacturing the sole of the shoes. A new Uni-Mounding 2.0 production process was utilised which is an improved technology from the one used on the MIJIA ports Shoes 2. In this case, 6different materials and layers were bonded into one single sole. Each of the layers is separated using a thin polyurethane film pressed and bonded. Because the components are pressed together with the mould, the appearance of the components will appear to be cleaner than the ordinary manual glue combination, and the probability of the glue opening up is also highly reduced. The new uni-Moulding 2.0 process also provides even better stability and support to the feet. This process combines the characteristics of the different materials to meet the needs of different sporting use. The second-generation version fuses 5 different layers and types of materials are fused into a single mould.
The front of the shoes uses a popcorn cloud midsole to increase the rebound feedback required by the forefoot during sporting activities. The back of the palm uses the FREE FORCE technology midsole, which gives the back of the feet enough cushioning demand during exercise.
In order to better support the contours of the foot, Xiaomi has completely upgraded the fishbone system in use inside the shoes. In this case, 10 fish bones are linked together using the TPU injection process to form a 360° locking system. It ensures the support of the shoe body to the foot during exercise.
Further, the upper part of the Mi Men’s Sports Shoes 2 is manufactured using a three-dimensional seamless high-elastic knitting process. The entire upper part uses just one seam thus minimizing foreign body sensation. The material is very durable such that you can throw in the sneakers into the washing machine without fear of it getting damaged. It comes with a reflective lace and body making, keeping the user to oncoming traffic visible at night.
The Redmi Note 8 Pro will defer from the Redmi Note 7 Pro in a lot of ways but one thing will remain unchanged and that is the design of the screen.
Up until today, none of the official promotional materials and leaks have revealed the screen of the upcoming phone but thanks to a promotional video, we can now confirm the Redmi Note 8 Pro will keep the waterdrop notch screen of its predecessor.
The promotional video is actually a test showing how strong the phone is. In the 39-second video, we see two units of the phone get stepped on by a weightlifter while carrying a pretty heavy barbell. After he is done, both phones are shown to be undamaged (at least their screens are fine). It is at this point we see the Redmi Note 8 Pro has a waterdrop notch.
At the end of the video, we also get confirmation that the phone will come in two colors – green and white. We also get a closer look at the waterdrop notch.
Redmi Note 8 Pro’s retail box
Redmi’s general manager, Lu Weibing has also revealed the retail box of the phone. The box has a gradient color design like that of the Redmi Note 7 Pro but there is very little purple this time. The name of the phone is also written vertically instead of horizontally at the bottom.
The Redmi Note 8 Pro launches on August 29. It will be powered by the Helio G90T, pack quad rear cameras and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, and also have liquid cooling.
