Chinese brands gains market share in Southeast Asia despite concerns over Huawei

Chinese smartphone brands have been gaining a significant amount of market share globally, thanks to the growth of China-based smartphone manufacturers in the Southeast Asian markets.

For instance, the popularity of Chinese brands has been rising in Vietnam since the past couple of years, marking a major change from the past dominance of brands such as Samsung and Apple.

China-based smartphone brands have grabbed more than two-third of the market share in two of the world’s largest smartphone markets — China and India. Now, the three leading brands — Oppo, Xiaomi, and Vivo have turned to the Southeast Asia market.

oppo logo

Combined, they garnered 62 percent of the region’s 30.7 million total handset shipments in the second quarter, up from 50 percent in the same quarter last year, according to a note this month from industry research agency Canalys.

South Korean giant Samsung still remains the leader in the market with a growth of 5 percent in the region. Chinese brands Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi have secured second, third, and fourth position respectively. During this time, Oppo posted its biggest-ever growth of 49 percent in the three-month period.

Realme, the company backed by Oppo, has seen tremendous growth in the Indian market and recently entered Southeast Asia for the first time with a shipment of 1.6 million smartphones and 5.2 percent market share.

The deep-pocketed Chinese brands have adopted the strategy of aggressive marketing tactics and offering innovative handsets at an attractive price point. The companies are hiring local celebrities to aggressively market their devices. And this strategy is proving to be successful.

Even though there are concerns about Huawei, the leading Chinese smartphone company related to the security issues and the company’s close proximity to the Chinese government, it has not impacted other brands.

Western countries have concerns over Chinese smartphone companies and thus not many brands are present in that region but the same is not the case in Southeast Asia. The popularity of Chinese brands keeps rising even though their leading brand Huawei has been blacklisted by the United States.

Realme 5 Pro Review: Quad Camera Experience at a Budget! + Giveaway

We used to complain about the boredom of the budget phone market in early 2019, but now, we have to admit that it’s pretty wrong to draw the conclusion too early. We are not arguing that how the budget phone can challenge flagships in all aspects. We believe that a good budget phone can maintain a good overall balance with certain outgoing features beyond a result of compromise. The new released Realme 5 Pro is absolutely one of them.

The Realme Brand has been quite surprising in the industry this year. They have built up a good reputation in the global market with the Realme 3 and Realme X. But they’re not satisfied yet with the existing product line. At this point, the Realme 5 Pro shoulders a great mission to represent a new step for the brand.

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOTJkjdZpuM[/embedyt]

Design & appearance

The front face of the Realme 5 Pro is pretty similar to most phones with water-drop notch display, which can remind you of many other models, such as the Xiaomi A3 and the OnePlus 7. But the rear design is diverse from the others. The vertical 4-camera combination with cutting texture inherits the design gene of realme and brings a richer visual effect.

At first glance, it really brought a more comfortable and elegant visual experience than those phones with the color-gradient rear. The fingerprint reader is in the central area, which is easy to touch. It can also be a shutter button when taking photos, but I really don’t suggest to turn it on as a shutter, because it’s really easy to touch by mistake. Although the camera combination is a bit bump-up, unlike the OnePlus 7, the upright position makes it less intrusive in your hand. Otherwise, its weight of 184g does not cause much discomfort after holding it for a long time.

Display

The Realme 5 Pro has a 6.3-inch LCD display, with 2340×1080 resolution and 450nit brightness. For the front face, thanks to the edge control, the display achieves a high screen-to-body ratio of 90.8%. And it is covered by a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for protection. The Realme 5 Pro doesn’t offer many options on color mode. So, if only judge it with its standard mode, it actually looks nice and detailed. Based on our review experience, it could be a better choice for a budget phone to have a mature LCD display rather than a cheap AMOLED display.

Qual Camera experience

The rear camera combination is one of the most remarkable features of the Realme 5 Pro. Several weeks before, we talked about the Xiaomi CC9, a budget phone with a flagship-level main camera, while now you have another choice and even reach a better photography experience. The Realme has 4 cameras on the rear. It packs a SONY 48-megapixel primary camera with an f/1.7 aperture; a second 8-megapixel wide-angle camera with an f/2.25 aperture, a third macro lens with an f/2.4 aperture and the last portrait lens. The primary camera is the SONY IMX586 camera, which also can be found on a lot of flagships this year, such as Mi9 and the OnePlus 7 Pro.

The 48MP primary camera ensures that the image reaches much detail so that you can have your second creation by cutting the image. Otherwise, the Realme 5 Pro inherits the Chroma Boost feature to further enhances the photographic effect. The AI engine can recognize scene information and then present a final image with delightful colors and real details. Under low light conditions, it supports a ‘4 in 1’ big-pixel feature to help you shoot brighter photos with better detail. The Realme 5 Pro features a Nightscapes mode, which remarkably boosts the night photo shooting. The final image is produced by a multi-frame combination. It achieves a better brightness balance, noise reduction, and excellent dynamic range.

For the wide-angle camera, it’s basically for outdoor photography. The Realme 5 Pro solves the main problem of most wide-angle shooting, the edge distortion. The images with good bright conduction perform well, but when it comes to night scenes, the noise problem and detail blurring are quite obvious.

While for the portrait and macro mode, such kind of features no doubt bring much fun on phone photography. From the samples, it does achieve special effects with good background blurring and subject outstanding. Especially for portrait mode, matching the Realme filter system, it really improves a fine tone with portrait style. But, on the other hand, these two cameras probably are only built for limited scenarios. If you are a special photographer, you probably would like it.

Performance

The Realme 5 Pro runs a snapdragon 712 CPU, which has claimed 10% improvement from the Snapdragon 710. And from the result of Geekbench 4, the single-core score is over 1900, which is even close to the snapdragon 835. So literally it won’t have any problem with system fluency. And let’s see it’s gaming performance, in the PUBG MOBILE test with default settings, it can reach a high refresh rate at 59 fps, which also have some fluctuation at around 30fps-60fps during the test. Compared to the snapdragon 665 on the Xiaomi A3 and the 710 on the Xiaomi CC9, the Realme 5 Pro seems to be more ambitious to build up overall performance besides an ultra-camera step.

As a result, a snapdragon 712 does mean a lot for someone who is searching for a balanced budget phone. Otherwise, on the software level, the Realme 5 Pro supports a feature called Hyperboost 2.0. it improves both the frame performance and the touching response. In actual gaming, it really brings a fluent experience, which in 2019, is more than what a budget phone can give you.

Battery

For the battery, the realme 5 Pro has 4000mAh capacity and a VOOC 3.0 fast charging at 20W. To get a full charging on Realme 5 Pro, it only takes you around 80 mins. It’s pretty common to see the compromise on the fast-charging, while over the Realme 5 Pro, the fast-charging support is much like a bonus.

Conclusion

Otherwise, features like the 3.5mm headphone jack and dual-channel WIFI connection also construct a good image that how Realme concerns user experience. For Vlogger users, the Sony IMX586 with EIS (Electric Image Stabilization) guarantees the video shooting capacity up to 4K/30fps. In conclusion, All these kinds of specs make the Realme 5 Pro stand out from the mid-range crowd.

Pete Lau reveals OnePlus TV has Quantum Dot screen, launches next month

OnePlus is set to announce new phones soon, next month according to a recent leak. However, the company has another big unveiling next month too – the launch of its very first smart TV which will be called OnePlus TV.

Pete Lau, the CEO of OnePlus, revealed some new details about the OnePlus TV in an exclusive interview with Business Insider.

First, he confirmed the OnePlus TV will launch in September and it will arrive in India first. This lends further credence to the info that the OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7T Pro will launch in India on September 26. The TV and phones should be unveiled on the same day.

Pete Lau revealed that the focus while developing the TV was on image and sound quality. According to him feedback from a lot of users said: “…..image quality is the most important thing they care about.”. The company’s top executive revealed they compared their TV against “the best of the best”. While that may mean the quality should be high, you should note that the OnePlus TV doesn’t use an OLED panel but a QLED panel.

Explaining the reason for not using OLED, Mr. Lau said OLED panels are expensive and the “price difference doesn’t match the quality difference.” (compared to QLED). One thing he didn’t mention is the screen size of the TV.

The OnePlus TV will run Android TV but a customized version. According to Mr. Lau, the OS has been optimized and integrated deeply for the best user experience. The explanation regarding the user interface given by Business Insider says the OnePlus TV won’t display a carousel of TV apps like most Smart TVs do, instead, it will show the users the content they like, thereby eliminating the need to remember the streaming app which shows a TV series or movie.

The OnePlus TV is supposed to integrate seamlessly with the smartphone and one of the features we should see is using the phone’s keyboard for input on the TV. This should eliminate the need for pairing a wireless keyboard to your smart TV or using the directional and Enter button to scroll and select on an on-screen keyboard.

Pete Lau also added that the OnePlus TV will also launch in the EU, US, and China later.

Realme 5 vs Xiaomi Mi A3: Specs Comparison

Oppo’s sub-brand just unveiled a new series of smartphones focused on quality-price ratio including the Realme 5 and the Realme 5 Pro. Two phones with an amazing specs sheet sold in the most affordable price range you can expect for this kind of device. We believe that the new line-up is composed of the perfect competitors of the new Xiaomi Mi CC series which includes the Mi CC9 and the Mi CC9e also known as the Xiaomi Mi A3. Given that the Xiaomi Mi A3 is the one sold outside China, we decided to compare it with the Realme 5 as we believe they are very similar choices with an amazingly high value for money, actually among the best ones in their price range. But each of them is more valid for certain kinds of users. Here we will try to let you understand which one is the best for your needs.

Design

Both Realme 5 and Xiaomi Mi A3 boast a very attractive body with reflective backs and gradient colors, but if you really want the best design and build quality, then there is nothing better than Xiaomi Mi A3 in its price range. Just like premium phones, it has both a glass back and an aluminum frame, and you can not expect a better thing from a so affordable device. On the other hand, note that Realme 5 is splash resistant, you may need it if you want to use your phone under the rain or in similar situations. Also keep in mind that Xiaomi Mi A3 has an in-display fingerprint reader, while Realme 5 does not.

Display

Displays are not the strongest point of Realme 5 and Xiaomi Mi A3. Unfortunately, both feature just an HD (720p) resolution, while most of the phones sold at those prices come with Full HD+ display. Between these two devices, Xiaomi Mi A3 should offer the best display quality as it is equipped with an AMOLED panel instead of an LCD one. And, as mentioned above, it has an in-display fingerprint reader. But Xiaomi Mi A3 has a very small display that is amazing for compact phone lovers, but if you want a phone for the best multimedia experience, gaming or productivity, then Realme 5 is better due to its wide 6.5-inch screen.

Specs & Software

Same chipset and similar memory configurations, but Xiaomi Mi A3 has an added value: it is part of the Android One program. So, besides offering a more lightweight and well-optimized user experience, it is even updated faster and more constantly as Android One is supported directly by Google. Still, Realme 5 has pretty nice performance and a special AI Freezer feature which freezes background apps by detecting when the user does not need them.

Camera

Realme 5 is one of the few very affordable handsets to feature a quad camera setup on its rear side, including a dedicated macro camera. But despite the presence of a more versatile camera department, I prefer the Xiaomi Mi A3 because it has a more convincing 48 MP main sensor which captures a lot of detail with its Quad Bayer technology. Further, the Xiaomi Mi A3 has a way better selfie camera with a 32 MP resolution. The Realme 5 Pro would win the rear cameras battle, but unfortunately, it is not part of this comparison.

Battery

Thanks to their efficient chipsets and their HD displays, Realme 5 and Xiaomi Mi A3 can last a lot longer than most of the smartphones out there on a single charge. Given that it has about 1000 mAh more in terms of capacity, we believe that Realme 5 will last more in most of the scenarios. Xiaomi Mi A3 has a definitely more efficient display, but the difference in capacity is too big for it.

Price

In the Indian market, Realme 5 carries a starting price tag of just €125/$140, while Xiaomi Mi A3 starts from €220/$245 in the global market. We still do not know how much Realme 5 will cost globally, but do not expect a so different price compared to the Mi A3. Overall, Realme 5 may be a better choice for a lot of people due to its bigger display. But if we exclude the smaller display, Xiaomi Mi A3 looks slightly better due to its awesome cameras, in-display fingerprint reader, Android One, and build quality.

Oppo Realme 5 vs Xiaomi Mi A3: PRO and CONS

Oppo Realme 5

PRO

  • Bigger display
  • Bigger battery
  • Splash resistant
  • Micro SD dedicated slot

CONS

  • Worse display quality

Xiaomi Mi A3

PRO

  • More compact
  • Android One
  • In-display fingerprint scanner
  • Better cameras
  • Great build quality

Xiaomi’s revenue growth slows down in Q2 2019, Huawei could be to blame

Xiaomi reported its financials for the second quarter of 2019 earlier today. The smartphone maker, listed last year, posted slower growth in the last quarter, with Huawei grabbing a significant chunk of market share in China in the past few months.

Xiaomi Mi Store Turkey

Xiaomi posted 15% revenue growth in Q2 2019 which is slower than what was estimated by analysts. The company’s revenue rose to 51.95 billion yuan ($7.36 billion) from 45.24 billion yuan during the same period last year. In comparison, Xiaomi’s revenue grew by a solid 27% in the first quarter of the year.

The company is facing tough times with the Chinese smartphone market being in a slump and Huawei growing pretty significantly in the domestic market. Ever since the ban was enforced by the US government on Huawei, Chinese customers have come in support of the telecommunications giant. IDC reports that Huawei and its Honor brand increased its market share in China in Q2 2019 to 37% from 27.4% last year. This increase came at the expense of other manufacturers like Xiaomi who saw a fall in its shipments.

Xiaomi’s net income fell by a staggering 87% to 1.96 billion yuan. However, the company still managed to post a decent 3.64 billion yuan adjusted profit. The total shipments in the last quarter were 32 million.

Xiaomi’s CFO also revealed that the company has been making strategic investments to build a “Chinese supply chain” most likely in response to the US’ stance against Chinese companies. In this regard, the company has already invested in companies such as Verisilicon and Bestechnic who design chips for smartphones and audio devices respectively.

Leaked Redmi Note 8 Pro reveals quad rear camera setup

The Redmi Note 8 is scheduled for an August 29 release alongside the Redmi TV. The phone is already in mass production which means sales should begin in early September. However, there is a lot we still don’t know about the phone and its Pro version. Thanks to a leaked photo from a video ad shoot, we now know what the rear of the Redmi Note 8 Pro looks like.

The leaked photo shows the Redmi Note 8 Pro has a similar design to the Redmi K20/Mi 9T. The cameras, four in number, are arranged vertically in the middle of the phone. The first camera has a ring around it just like that of the Mi 9 and there is an LED flash flanking the setup on the right.

Redmi Note 8 Pro

There is a text, most probably details about the camera written below the cameras but the picture isn’t clear enough to make out the details. However, the Redmi branding at the bottom is unmissable.

The Redmi Note 8 Pro not only adopts the camera style of the Redmi K20 but also copies its finish. You can see the phone has a two-color paint job – black for the middle and green flanking on both sides. However, it is hard to see if it has that frost-like feel and light-changing effect like the Redmi K20.

Redmi Note 8 Pro

There is no fingerprint on the back which means the Redmi 8 Note Pro will have an in-display fingerprint sensor and for that, an AMOLED display.

The specs of the Redmi Note 8 Pro are unknown but a benchmark result and or TENAA listing should reveal more details.

MIUI 11 new “Inter-finger call” function leaks: Lets Voice Assistant take calls on your behalf

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi is currently developing the next version of its custom Android user interface which will be called MIUI 11. The company’s product director recently hinted that the launch of the new custom ROM isn’t far off. The new version is expected to come with some improvements over the MIUI 10. Quite a few of its news features have been revealed, one of which is a “sky replacement” effect on the MIUI gallery app. A new feature purported to be onboard the MIUI 11 has leaked online.MIUI 11 inter-finger call function

The new feature is called “Inter-finger call”. Of course, the exact name may be different but a description of the feature was given as well as a screenshot of the MIUI interface showing where it can be activated. The “incoming call” interface with the new “Inter-finger call” option on display is also contained in the screenshot.

EDITOR’S PICK: Huami reveals it has already started working on Xiaomi Mi Band 5

According to the MIUI test screenshot, the inter-finger call means that the smartphone voice assistant can help you answer calls in the form of text. The function can be activated in the MIUI lab. When it is activated, the inter-finger call slider appears on the incoming call interface. Instead of receiving the call, as usual, the user only needs to slide the inter-call slider. When this is done, the call is received but the virtual assistant converts the voice call to text messages which is displayed on the interface in real-time. In addition, XiaoAI will provide some responses to the conversation in the form of text options. Any of the options the user selects will be relayed to the caller via voice response. The call records are also stored in the MIUI Lab for future reference.

This feature will debut in China so the XiaoAI virtual assistant will power this feature. We can’t say if Xiaomi will include this feature with Google Assistant for the global MIUI users. Xiaomi may likely start the official rollout of MIUI 11 in September this year.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 is the first HDR10+ tablet

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 is the most powerful Android tablet you can buy right now. It comes with a bunch of features including dual rear cameras and an in-display fingerprint scanner. The latter is actually a first for any tablet but that is not the only first, the Galaxy Tab S6 boasts.

Promotional materials by Samsung China says the Tab S6 is also the first tablet to support HDR10+. HDR10+ is actually a format created by Samsung to take on Dolby vision.

It is an improvement over HDR10 which uses static metadata. What this means is that the range of brightness for video content (film or TV show) is already set at the beginning, so it doesn’t change. However, for HDR10+ which uses dynamic metadata just like Dolby Vision, the brightness range can be adjusted frame by frame. The advantage this brings is more details, better brightness, better color accuracy, and better contrast.

So if you are streaming HDR10+ content from the Galaxy Tab S6 such as the upcoming second season of Jack Ryan, it should look much better than when you watch it on a device that only supports HDR10.

The Galaxy Tab S6 has a 10.5-inch 2560 x 1600 display, a Snapdragon 855 processor, 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. There is also an 8GB RAM + 256GB version. The tablet has a 13MP primary rear camera and a 5MP ultrawide angle camera. The front-facing camera is an 8MP sensor. There are four AKG-tuned speakers so you get impressive audio quality alongside your already super clear film or TV show.

The Galaxy Tab S6 is not only an entertainment device but also a work device. There is the famous S Pen which now boasts new features. You also have Samsung DeX for a desktop-like environment and you can purchase the BookCover Keyboard to transform it into a 2-in-1. Other features include Android 9 Pie, Bixby Assistant, MicroSD card slot, Face Unlock, and a 7040mAh battery. The Galaxy Tab S6 starts at $649.
